4.8ghz Air old school screen shots

So thanks to my ignoring being half asleep and forgetting to manuelly set the CPU multi when i was testing the limits of the HT, i ended up with this @ 1.5v (actual voltage is 1.536 as can be seen in shot of hardware tab)

Not even going to pretend it's stable cause it's far from at that voltage, froze trying to verify cpu-z. But still, considering it's an unmodded board, air cooling with DuOrb...it's mildly impressive, no?

Also since kitty was present during this achievment i think he deserves some of the credit thus i include a nice shot of him laying on top of my 22inch compaq qvision CRT where he spends a fair amount of time as it keeps his tummy toasty plus....kinda looks like he's working some voodoo with his eyes...somewhat unsettling but kitty is king.

lol at cpu temperature 33C no way the boards going to be toast before the chip according to your bios lol

MB temp on this board either refers to NB or SB or the PWMs, but yes running a bit warmer then usual as i had voltage jacked up somewhat high to test HT limits

    NB VID 1.38
    NB Voltage 1.45
    HT voltage 1.38
    SB voltage 1.35

But really only running about 5-10c over normal stock idle temps

    @ jcmarfliph

thanks, there is a fair chance that the retail 940 BE's will do a bit better since some things were fine tuned from ES chips this is from. But you have to figure that if it will do 4.8 on air, even getting into the OS for a couple miniutes that with a half way decent water set up there is loads of headroom to continue clocking up.

So you were testing hypertransport but I see core 4.8g, nb 2.0g and no hypertransport., im confused.

Either way booting with 4.8g and not blowing anything is nice.

In this boards bios you have options for CPU NB multi and CPU NB HT link speed with FSB settings from 200-600. Upping the FSB overclocks the HT AND NB.

Had the NB multi at 6 and HT link at 1.2 at the time i think, will have to go back and check the OC profile to be sure since as excited as i was to see that clock, was a little scared of hearing something either go "pop" or just have the thing shut down with the other voltages i was running.

Also figured i'd throw in a pic of base of the heatsink with IR temp, with 1.5250v from AOD which puts actual voltage closer to 1.55 thats with a 10 minute 100% load across all 4 cores running 3.9ghz

Man that is one beefy heatsink...

Even if that is not stable, 39C at the base of the cooler with that voltage and clock pretty much says the phenom II runs pretty cool with a big OC. What was ambient at the time? I might be able to estimate processor heat output if I have that - there is enough data on dualOrb to estimate C/W number.

    This heatsink suck!

ambient temp was somewhere between 23 and 24c at the time. So yes these chips run cool.

Abel... this chip has a low TDP, the Heatsink is 100% copper and...ugh i will let Uncle Jimbo explain the finer points of the heatsink since it's a fair assessment that he is more knowledgeable in the details of cooling performance

It not that bad a heatsink just not nearly as good as the best out there for the money.

no, not the best now but 6 months ago when i got it it was at the top of the list, the Hyper Z or V8 would be at the top of my list for air coolers at this point, Hyper Z cools EVERYTHING on the board down pretty impressively

noctua's is leader on cpu, but it got a big negative.

1.\ doesnt provide airflow on the motherboard.
2.\ laying youre computer down so its placed in level (water level) or however its called. improves temp quite abit.
    3.\ big, heavy, unpractical.

but it cools good its like 1 C cooler than the other champs, and test results show like 1-3 C cooler than tt duoorb which is a cooler that may only block memory slots (does it ? :p)

once had watercooling, you just cannot get away from it <3
Im sticking with my watercooling, got its first refresh since its first service, 10 years ago. was about time to change the rads and block. the tubes lasted 5 and 4 years, wasnt a pretty sight.

well, looks promosing with 3.9 air ioced can you go for 4 ghz prime stable ?

Still working on ya es ? or gotten a 940 retail yet :p

The very best cooler in that test has .15 C/W performance. While that is better, it's only 20% better. Being within 20% of the performance of the best cooler on the market probably deserves something better than "sucks".

The stock Intel cooler, by comparison, is .26 C/W - now that actually sucks.

More interesting to me is we now have enough info to say that the Phenom II at around 4G, after 10 min load (based on IoC's data) showed a rise of 17C (39-22). With a .18 C/W cooler, that says the chip is putting out 95W - a really exceptional result, and about half of what the i7 965 puts out at 3.5G.

That means that it should be relatively easy to use TEC cooling, for example, even at big OC. Using for example the Swiftech TEC cooler, we could get to 10C at the chip interface pretty easily, which should open up some nice headroom.

Do both Amd and Intel monitor their core chip temp in the same way? I find it hard to believe that a chip running at 4ghz full load will only read 33C (the IR probe is at best questionable) and this begs the question. If they can have a 4ghz chip only dissipating 95W then why not release a chip >3ghz or am I looking at the wrong numbers??

yup still working on the ES imsoc, still waiting on 940 can't wait to do a comparison. The DuOrb does hang over the Ram sockets, but there is still enough clearance to swap them out easily, though it's more of a challenge in smaller cases.

As for the IR probe being questionable, i suspect that i could have a thermalsensor sitting inside the base of the heatsink and the results would still be questionable. At idle temp in the bios the IR shows the same temp. It shows the same temp on the Chipset which is what the bios reports as MB temp and it shows similar temps for gpu's as what is reported in CCC.

The 940's are 3ghz, don't forget that the FX series is coming back.

heh, yup actually have 3, 22inch crts, the qvision and two flatscreen Sun workstation displays, but one is on the verge of death the other started getting color banding, prolly from the years of having 2048x1536 -2560x1900 resolutions forced, though the Qvision still does 25x19 though just use 20x15 usually, keep it for 3D graphics work and photo editing, but mainly i use it as my TV have a 24in LCD as main display with two more 19inch Crts running off the IGP.

Though i'll admit i'm getting annoyed with having the 22inch qvision as the thing weighs like 80 pounds and it's a PITA to move =P, but kitty would use his demonic powers if i took his belly warmer away.

The Sun monitors are a bit heavier and once upon a time had a better image quallity but meh, qvision has got to be pushing 12 years old by now, thing has Dsub and BNC connectors on it ahaha

I was using the IR measurement of the cooler base, which showed 39C. While IR measurement can be questionable for precise measurement, it is good enough for a ball park estimate - even if it is off by a degree either way, it's only 5% or so. The right way to do that kind of test is with a heatsink with a calibrated sensor, which has been charaterised by performance against a resistive load with known power input. I'll do some testing like that once I can get my hands on a 940 Phenom II.

The internal temps are not useful for heatsink power calculations, or really as anything other than a reference, unless they have been adjusted for offset and curve (through software). Based on the cooler temp, I would think the internal temp was probably closer to 50C, maybe more, but that's just a guess.

If AMD follows past practice, they will add higher end parts once they see what the bin split is from volume production... My suspicion is that the 140W TDP for platform designers was to accommodate higher power parts as a straight swap with no other changes, since the 3G parts are obviously way below that dissipation. Based on what happened with Barcelona, I think AMD is wise to under-promise and over-deliver this time around.

They've been working on this for years and tape out had to of been at least over a year, I'm sure they know what their process can do by now. I think that it's too close to release to debate so I guess we will see.

not fair, you have cat when you did o/c? joke. (just imagining how pro intel going to spin this).
looks like an interesting 2009 for amd lovers. looking forward to this chip on ln2. good job man.
