this is true, but it also makes a pretty significant impact on temps so keep an eye out

I understand the guys saying don't go over high 70s etc but i don't think that operating at top 80s and even over 90c is going to shorten your cpu's life span, voltage does this far more than temp and they're extremely resilient to even voltage, to intel's credit.

The TJmax exists for a reason - that's the temperature that, if exceeded, for extended periods of time, may begin to shorten life span, and you're never going to be at that temperature for long because it will throttle and kick back down. The way i see it, any temps below that region are ok, as far as Intel is concerned, and indeed i've seen more than a few about this forum happily using settings that load 400%/800% @ 80-90c+. Maybe i've missed something but when was the last time you heard of a cpu dying because of heat and not high voltage?

    Just my thoughts

That makes sense to me Xello.

My i7 920 arrives tomorrow, can't wait to see what I get. Unfortunately, I do not have a tracking number on the motherboard yet so I don't know if it is coming tomorrow or not. It's coming from a different warehouse but I paid for overnight delivery so, if it did ship, it should be here as well tomorrow. NewEgg has been having some major server issues as, in addition to only receiving one tracking number, my order status on the website is still only in the "verified" stage which is step 2 of 5. I also didn't receive said tracking number until this morning and it shipped on Friday. Definite weirdness. Anyways, I'm rambling...

I agree. It didn't alarm me seeing +90C at 4ghz on air but I knew it could be better for the clocks and stability if dropped into the 70-80C range. These things are beasts; they could probably withstand a bit more than 100C and keep chugging.

Lower Temps may help with stability, but sooner or later you hit the chips limit.

I can run all day with my i7 965 at 35 x 126 (4.41) with HT enabled and 100% load on Water at 63C.

But that's as far as this CPU can be pushed.

Maybe I'm limited by Asus' TDP limit that cannot be disabled like in other Mfgs Boards.

Intel specs say max is 1.55v and they use a very conservative Max based on idiots using their stock Intel HSF.

@Kensek - Is that p95 stable? If so, great job and can't wait to give it a whirl...

No, but it works for benching Vantage, 3DMarks and anything that requires 100% Load for about 10 minutes.

Only up to 4.3 GHz is prime stable. And for me that's only 30 minutes.

More time to Prime is just so silly. Who cares is it primes for more than that?

for everyone who runs distributed computing apps/rendering/video conversion etc. thats takes several hours of full load.

I for example I run sometimes some CFD simulations, which can take, depednding on the problem size, several days to finish.

With all the high temp/volt, high clocked overclocks I was wondering if any of you had seen how high these chips can OC on extremely low voltage. I've heard reports on other boards of people hitting 3.8ghz on 1.184v CPU Voltage... pretty impressive. Just wondering if any of you have tried similar tests.

so 20x passes of linX is fairly stable then?

I think it is both cpu and bios limited. On some bioses many have gotten there, but some cpus dont seem to get there regardless. Mine is stable at 20x200 with 1.33v load, 21x200 1.376v load and 21x205 1.42 load.

So If I want to go over the 4Ghz "limit" I need to increase my DRAM voltage above 1.65 ?
And if I want to go above 1.65v I need to keep my QPI/VTT voltage at least 0.5v lower than Vdimm ?
Its getting a bit confusing i might say, what else is that it has no logical explanation to all that

BTW, I had no problems running my QPI/Dram Core (Asus Terminology) at Voltages up to 1.65v on P6T Deluxe.
Just haven't tried higher than that as it seems to have no effect above 1.6v and above 1.65v is too much voltage IMO.
I am watercooling my chip pretty good, so far My max temps are about 60-65c on the hottest core, so extreme high temps are not an issues for me.

I've been trying to track down people with problems in that range. I don't think there is a problem unless the motherboard is defective. Maybe with some early bios.

More than likely those having a problem either a) don't have sufficient voltage or b) have an unresolved memory timing issue. I haven't seen anyone with 1333 or faster memory, and 1.45v VCore, 1.65 or greater VDIMM, and a 6x memory multiplier fail at 20x200. If there is, please show me. That is a pretty hot setup though, 250w. It could be over 80C on average air.

I created a second thread trying to isolate the OC failures, but so far only one poster.

You probably need to be on a 6x memory multiplier, and for testing, maybe relax the timings.

Has anyone had any problems getting bclk 172+ to post correctly.I am having issues (see my posts in the Gigabyte x58 ud5/extreme thread).I can't seem to post correctly above bclk 172 i have tried different bios versions and many settings.(boards restarted a few times until the failed overclock message is displayed) I have the following tested with 2 hours of linx

20x bclk 170 with HT and Turbo on
    qpi/vtt 1.18v i tried higher (1.34) anything over 1.18 makes no difference.
    vcore v1.3125
    power managment off
    qpi/unicore/mem multipliers on auto (x36 x20 x8)

dram v1.66 8,8,8,24 2t manually set to match spec.

The above works fine but i was hoping for at least 3.6ghz.Temps seem good also.

I think i have a bad cpu and i am wondering if anyone else has had this problem before i sell it on.

    Thanks.

    Already tried the following:-

    qpi 36
    mem 8
    unicore 16

vtt/qpi 1.34 tried a bit higher but can this damaged the i7?
vcore tried all the way up to 1.4
dram 1.66 auto and manual settings

bios versions tried F3 (shipping bios) f4f 4fk f5a currently back with the official f4.

Thanks for your advice , The only problems i have noticed on this forum is trying to get 4ghz on air i wish i could get 3.7ghz!
