i think whar makes pi so popular is the nature of how it runs..

watching the loops go by when on the limit of a WR or something is great.. you can see from the first loop if the run is faster than the last..

I don't have any problem with the bench in that regard.. I think if everyone can agree in peace that the 2 CPU's performance differs by such a huge margin that comparisons between them can't be made on it anymore, and the worth of each cpu shouldn't be judged on the times, then it's all good...

if Phenom 2 was say 10% slower than yorkfield @ it, it would still be a valid bench for comparisons, as that's not an unreasonable lead given ther raw single threaded crunching differences between the uArch's.
