I haven't said its not possible, but look at your temps, all above 90°C in summer you will run 100% into the point where the cpu beginns to throttle.

Plus your on a 965 which is binned better.
HT on = 76-79c tops, even @ 1.52v, however, it blue screens within 4 minutes. Don't wanna go higher.

So I guess it's 3.8GHz HT on + cool rig... or 4.0GHz HT off + hotter temps? I still think watercooling the NB/SB may help. Just waiting for Bitspower to release their new block.

You wont get much benefit form WC the IOH (NB), even with 200mhz qpi clock it tops out at ~60°C with passive cooling.

So what could I try more QPI volts more IOH volts?

Just for the record - 4ghz nehalem is absolutely a doable do on air.
    max temp, prime stable -
    4ghz HT on - 86C
    4.1 HT on - 97C
    4.0 HT off - 66C
    4.3 HT off - 78C
However, Hornet331 does make a good point - it is now winter where I am - so next summer (in Virginia) - I will want to keep an eye on my house air conditioner.

Ok, looks like temps are not the issue for me, so what can I safely go to Vcore wise for 24/7 use? Intel say 1.55v Max?

    Thanks guys.

    whats your qpi voltage?

also at what speed runs your NB.

    1.35v & 3200MHz respectively. QPI is 3600MHz so 8:9 ratio.

try increasing volts on qpi if you want to go with 4ghz.

Now this is what confuses me .. p.22 of the spec says absolute max 1.55V .. but then p.23 p.24 give a formula that implies Vcc <= 1.375V (depending on load .. )

    So what gives ?

That spec posted by SteveRo also implies Vtt <= 1.35V absolute max - but most of us are running above that ..

I got my i7 920 after the RMA, I was hoping for a B batch. But ended up with 3841A431. Anyone got this batch here?

i got an "a" batch myself, nothing wrong with it, great chip IMO 4.2 GHz stable. "b" batches supposed to be better?

    here are my voltages

    http://www.xtremesystems.org/Forums/...postcount=1379

other than that, all power saving features off, HT enabled, QPI link at 4,800 g/t's. 200*20 plus turbo mode makes it a multi of 21 resulting in 4.2 GHz

As per the members who has B Batch, there were able to Overclock with less CPU voltage.

    @ Chicken Patty

Why do you have such a low CPU Score @ 3DMark06? Or is it Vista?

Vista, but also my memory, Im assuming tri channel helps and the mem at 1000 Mhz also, I would say.

Definitely Vista mate, I get the exact same cpu score at the same clocks.

Hi guys, I posted my results in the other i7 thread first by mistake, but heres my first OCing settings for all you to check out. A lot of it was guess work, so I hope it all makes sense. The voltages especially were guesses, I still don't really get how to tell the exact amount I need.

    CPU Ratio: 17
    BCLK: 195
    DRAM: 1563mhz
    UCLK (UnCore): 3322mhz
    QPI: 7038 MTs

    CPU Voltage: 1.2375v
    PLL Voltage: 1.9c
    QPI (unCore) Voltage: 1.4v
    DRAM Voltage: 1.62v

    I'm using a i7 920 on an Asus P6T with OCZ Platinum DDR3 1333 RAM (7-7-7-20 timings)

@ ChickenPatty - thanks for the info re: volts

Are you still running 1.35V CPU ?? Your screenie above shows 1.41V

Also what is Vtt +300mV ? Does this mean 1.65V (ie 300mV above CPU ?)

Wow .. is Vista *really* this bad across the board for dragging CPU's down ???

I see the same thing with JP's Chess Benchmark .. 10% slower in Vista over XP .. pretty shocking really ..

Are there any apps that are optimised for Vista .. or is it a fact of life that *everything* will run 10% slower thanks to the overhead in the OS ..

bro, those voltages I kinda just got them off a guide in the EVGA forum, i'm not too familiar with them, I just know the computer was stable. But having them set manually and not knowing what they did scared me, so I set everything back to auto except vcore and started the overclock all over again. Heres what I have so far, little by little, if you see I am upping the BCLK at 5 MHz at a time. I still haven't ran any benches to test stability at the clock I am now which is 167*21 = 3.5 GHz. I am trying to find the best clock for the CPU so far, notice I am running RAM by SPD's currently exactly by specs. 9-9-9-24 @ 1333 MHz. Once I get the CPU where I want it, i'll focus on tweaking the RAM, the less and smaller the changes, the easier it is to catch a mistake or instability
