ATI 4870X2 Full Vgpumod/Vmemmod And Cooler Guide...

Here is a full modding guide for the Ati HD4870X2 gfx card.
you need a screwdriver and a sharp knife and a good solder iron and some small wires
And 2x50 Ohm and 1x50K Ohm Multiturn Vrs
And a lot of paticence.

The first thing we have to start with is to dismantle the card.

And now to unscrew all the screws.













And then we can take the back cover of the card, be carefull not to harm the mempads
as you are gonna use them again.

I have done 5 cards this way now and it works great the cooler can be run at higher
fanspeed with the same noise and the card is about 20-25c lower at load temps.
And the cores can be run at 1.40-1.425v without a problem on stock cooler.
I have got my card up to 950 on both cores and the mem on 1090 stable and
1125 not stable but i have water on the card.
Note dont go any higher than 1.75-1.80v on the mems becaus they will articfact alot.

Just for the heck of it I went and did the spacer behind the heatsink bit but I used a plastic washer from a plumbing kit.. about twice the thickness of what you used lol.

42c idle on the hot core (MEMIO reading), 37.5 idle on the cooler core (MEMIO reading).

That is in excess of 10c drop in temps for each core... now to get some game testing in.

Also should mention it is very important to change the thermal interface material. That stock stuff is too thick and dries out leaving a ~.5mm thick layer of horrible crap behind.

Thanks, just making sure :-) Can voltages be monitored with the readout in GPU-Z after modding? I'll set it up initially reading the hard points, but it would be nice to have a readout when the system is buttoned up.

Would the leads from an 80-conductor ide cable be sufficient? Or does the wiring need to be heavier?

Awesome, thanks. I practiced some similar soldiering on an old x1950 I had laying around this weekend. My 15w iron crapped out, so I did it with a 25w unit. The card is still working perfectly, but I've got a new 18w iron on the way.

mine is a 60w fine tip welleman solderiron and it works like a charm i never have burned any components with it for over 8 years now

Just use Flux like this: http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ductId=2049774 and you'll soon discover that you are a Soldering Monster.

Just use a toothpick to add a tad to the trace and a tad to the wire, they will attract to each other like magnet with almost no heat.

Oh no, I'm no stranger to soldiering. I took 2 years of electronics in school. I've voltmodded computer parts before, but none since 2003 or so. This looks like a cakewalk compared to the k7v dragon plus vcore mod that I did last! I'll wait on the 18w iron to arrive though. My 25w iron is a rubbish RadioShack unit. The iron is coming in the same package as the trimmers anyways.
