Is this only a problem on Asus boards? It sure as heck sounds like it is, which would be indicative of either a propagating BIOS fault or a motherboard engineering fault. But I doubt every Asus would carry the same eng. fault so maybe it really does have to do with the BIOS?

Are we aware of Gigabyte boards (or others) having this issue?

Either way this is POS. I tried two i7 940 CPUs now with the same results. In fact, the first CPU was worse as it ran hotter. I can run 19x200 rock solid for days if I wanted, even 216x19 with some serious volts but overall this is pretty pathetic as almost each and every i7 920 will get about the same results. So much for paying $350 more for a higher binned CPU.

Hey R2E owners, ive been reading that u guys are having problems Oc'ing the board over 4Ghz? Is this an ASUS problem? and can it be fixed by BIOS updates, or a manufacturing problem?
Would u guys still recommend the R2E over the Gigabyte-x58-Extreme after uve gone through these problems?

P.S- Not sure if this is in the right section though :o, delete me if necessary!
    EDIT: Typo!

The i7 920 OCd best on the EX58-Extreme, while the i7 965 OCd better on the R2E.

It's hard to tell what is what with the 920's and 940's becasue the memory *could* be coming into play and walling out. You don't hav the options in the BIOS to adjust the memory ratios becasue they are locked. That's something that can be done with a 965, but that won't tell anybody what is going on with the lower clocked versions. It's possible it *could* be memory, or a BIOS glitch, or a combination of things.

The trick is to isolate it, but the problem is you can't with a retail 920, or 940. It takes an ES sample that is unlocked to do that, and to have one of those, a user needs Intel support. If it is a BIOS issue, give it some time. We have brand new technology. We've had alot of initial BIOS releases to fix the nasty things, but they are probably working on the other tougher stuff now.

For those that have Rampage II Extreme boards, there WILL be support. Take that to the bank. No, we didn't pay a premium price for these boards for nothing. Yes, they are THAT good.

If this is becasue of a BIOS glitch, they'll find it. I'm not sure whether it is or not. I'm just saying if it is, they'll catch it.

^^ That being said with your 965 have you noticed any of these issues? I see alot of ppl running 4ghz+ with the 965.

T Flight many of the new bios youll find here and in other topics are beta, nothing to worry about. If you want to be 100% sure only get them from Asus website... Mem ratio's are only locked on ES i920/940's not retail.

Not sure whether the 20x200 issue is only CPU related. When i started playing had a hard time getting that stable while 19x211 and 21x190 are fine. Now testing mem in superpi with HT disabled, 20x200 runs as wel:

I sure hope you are right. Some stupid thing is going on here. The above link to my post in another thread points to me successfully running 4-cores/8-threads for a while without issues when normally I cannot even run for 5 seconds without crashing at 20x200 (19x, 21x, and 22x multipliers are just fine). However, after a couple of runs it went back to usual. Crashes a few seconds in, no matter the voltage settings. I cannot see this being CPU related though (maybe it is the chipset ) as such a large fault on so many chips really would not be overlooked by the manufacturer. Processors are some of the most precise devices built and they rarely have issues, and especially not of the likes a lot of people are seeing here. I've had tons of chips go accross my desk and I have never seen one with issues. Something else must be at play...

I do hope Asus comes through and fixes this somehow...I really, really do...

Edit: After some more tests, I am starting to think that this has something to do with heat. If I lower the ambient temperature I can run stress testing longer at 20x200 then when I leave it at normal. Also, if I crash at 20x200 and then restart to try the run again, I cannot do it. But if I turn the system off for a few minutes, then power it on, I can run 20x200 again. Why in the heck would this be the case though when even higher volts and temps have been stable under say 19x216? Something making the CPU too sensitive to heat at 20x200? Some protection circuit tripping when it is not supposed to? Any ideas why this would be the case?

I take it the bundled x-fi card is pretty pointless then, unless your installing a single GPU in second PCIe slot? (which the manual recommends not to do)

I have my 280 fitted in slot 1 and have just found this out It may have squeezed in if the bracket on my 280 was not a double one.

    So...no bloody sound!

no, the bundled sound card will fit even with 3 cards in tri sli in the top pci-e 1x slot! It's aftermarket soundcards that wont fit without modification. Did you see how I modded mine so i could fit any sound card? Its a page back or two on this thread!

so will the bundled sound card fit without the modifiaction and tri sli 280's? Because im currently tossing up between the evga and the rampage, but concerned about the sound card issue and tri sli. Also does tri 280's fit comfortably? I have a thermaltake armor + case...

Yes, the bundled sound card will fit with Tri-SLI. Did you people really think ASUS would ship a motherboard for the purpose of tri-SLI on the intel platform and not have the use of sound if you used tri-SLI? I have the board and it will fit don't worry.

Yeah, i just wanted to use a better sound card, so i used a different heatsink than the one that came with the board. It was a heatsink from an nforce 2 board that died about 5 years ago, LOL!! I just strapped a fan to it!!
