well that depends, in terms of performance 1gb 4870 on xfire and 4870 x2 performance is very close but x2 wins on most of reviews, but remember this card (GTX 295) its a different story is a mixed bag of GTX280 and GTX260 so we can't easily predict the performance since its a different chip from what nvidia is offering right now. (a 448-bit chip with 240 SP's)

By other hand again, most of the people knew from start (including me) that it was going to be a sandwich solution from the start ( a yummy one indeed) ATi chips are way smaller than nvidia GT200 and look how big the ATi is, and compared it with a single GTX280 which is almost the same size, so really it was posible to make a single pcb card with 2 GT200 chips? even with the 55nm reduction I still don't see it posible, I could be wrong tho

I think I'm confused with the fact that the 4870x2 is 55nm and fits 2 just fine. But Nvidias 55nm chips are too big? eh? I'm confused

Correct me if i'm wrong but the only difference between a GTX 280 and a GTX 260 are the SP (192 or 216 vs 240) and Memory.
    No it is 2 x 260 as it only has Memory: 896bit(448bitX2), 1792MB GDDR3
if it was 280's it would be Memory: 1024bit(512bitX2), 2048MB GDDR3 They have just added extra Shaders to each PCB

Nv is crazy, they can't stand to be number 2! so they put out a beastly meat cooking video card..if it kicks ass though, who cares what it looks like.

Sandwiches are only great for watching saucy WRs, wouldn't want to use it in my gaming rig though. Luckily GTX 285 will be released at same time.

55nm is the process node, not something describing the size of the GPU itself.

The size of the GPU is unrelated to the process used on it's internals.

Both GPUs would use the 55nm process, but they'll still have completely different die areas

put it this way and intel conroe (65nm) at first view its the same size and a peryn (45nm), but inside that its a different story, to see clearly what I mean look at this pic:

noticed that you probably can't determine which is 55nm unless you see the pcb because the chip isn't naked like ati's

    its just my view perspective...

No problem. To further clarify.. think of the process size as "how small can I make stuff inside". Smaller process = higher density of transistors in the same amount of space.

The XXnm refers to the process node that was used to design the silicon chip. You can find out more by googling 'lithography nodes' or 'process nodes'.

The reason why ATI can fit two of their chips on a single card is due to the fact that the RV770 die is 256m^2, compared to G200's 576mm^2 die. There's a positive correlation between die size, heat output and power consumption, so R700 seems logical once you take into account RV770's relatively small size.

I'm guessing that, for Nvidia, the transition from 65nm to 55nm resulted in minimal gains in shrinking the G200 die. Hence the support frame and the IHS.

i cant wait to step up from gtx260-216 maxcore to something bit better bit newer depends how much better it performs what i find weird is a game like crysis been out 2 years and only just becoming playble at high end cards whats going on

The power consumption claims in this thread are ridiculous..
The GTX 280 doesn't consume a lot more than the HD4870 and in idle it actually consumes a lot less than HD4850.
This card uses the new chips at 55nm wich should consume less than their predecessors.
So there's actually a big chance that this card will consume less than the HD4870X2 in load, and in idle it will consume less, 100% sure.

These are neither GTX260 or GTX280. This is a GT200b with 240sp and 448bit bus.
I guess they cut on the bandwidth to save PCB space, both in the ammount of circuitry connections required and in the ammount of RAM used. Probably there's no difference in performance between this card and two GTX280 SLI'd.

I also say boo, it looks like the 9800gx2 which is an infinitely flawed thermal dynamic design. I think ATI has the better idea with multiple die cards.

Hell at idle it consumes less than the 4870!

Call me manly but I think sandwiched GPUs are awesome. Even if they don't perform well they look like they could eat up whatever you throw at them.

Will be interesting to see who's going to be the first to flip around the PCBs and install two watercooling blocks on the card.

I tried that with the 9800GX2 but the internal bridges didnt reallllyyy wanna play and I didnt wanna push my luck given how fragile the connectors are.

    I ended up with this:

    Got 842MHz core
