I'd say you'd get more than 1C.. probably 10-15C without the IHS. I remember getting at least a 6C temp improvement just by lapping my Q6600.

Yeah, the IHS lapping is more benefitial than removing IHS. Especially when solder instead of low quality thermal paste is used...

Solder?? why would you put solder in between your heatsink/pot and chip? maybe i mis interpreted ya. but the post i got the pic from on page one is a Q6600 with the IHS sanded completely off.. he got over a 10C improvement then stock.

Yep you got me wrong.... i ment the chip and the IHS. Not the IHS and the Heat sink. Some processors have some kind of a thermal paste between IHS and the chip and some are soldered. The soldered ones are not worth removing...

how was this discovered? did someone kill a chip or did intel say so? if one was killed pics please

The solder will melt at 166-172°C,set the oven but measure with an accurate thermometer and just pop it off,aluminium foil wrap if necessary.Goes well with Duck.

It's quite obvious he's not going to post again in this thread. This is hit and run posting at its finest.

The core is soldered onto the IHS and trying to remove will destroy the cpu when it separates the layers. There is also small resistor packs around the core that would get broken on razor insert.

Or a water Block Molded or milled to the Direct Die dimensions with the IHS off
