Well you need to bear in mind that mine was specifically designed to crunch, that it does and nothing else. No downtimes, no other tasks taking up any CPU time, x64 OS with little to none background stuff running etc.

Same issue here.
But CPU-Z indicates it's PC2-6400 (400Mhz) memory. So it's 800 memory?
But why the h*** can I not OC past the 400 Mhz?
At FSB 401 it boots but freezes at testing.
At FSB 410 it doesn't boot at all.
Tried Vcore at 1.30 V (I have L5410 E0, they run at 1.212 V) and MCH at 1.3V.
BTW : they are 4x2 GB Kingston. Temps are usally at 60-70 C. PSU 1100W.
So what am I doing wrong?
NB too hot? What's your VTT voltage in bios? Try 1,35V MCH and maybe 1,86V Vdimm.

tried 1,35 for MCH and 1.86 Dimm. No luck.
Maybe Northbridge, but will this be hot immediately after boot (as at 410 is doe'sn't boot at all) ??
hmm, will try a 80mm fan on the NB.
Usually if it doesn't boot, it's the CPUs not being able to handle the FSB. But since your CPUs are E0 step, this seems unlikely. Dunno, you are the only one with L CPUs AFAIK.
see with mine i can boot 410 , but it becomes unstable. and if i adjust the Vcore to 1.325 where i want it. when i reboot, it tells me failed overclock, settings restored to factory default, so i just stick at 3.6ghz at 400fsb

Ok, so maybe we reached the max.
I'm now at 395, that's 100% stable and has no issues what so ever.
400 is ok , but not 100% stable, so I stick with 395 and just upgrade my processor in the future.

yeah, asus probe has the MB temp, that is the NB temp..

try 402 or 405 instead of 401?
Also test with the multiplier reduced.

i have the same issue, i don't know if its a bios problem or whatever, it
actully gets on my nerves to, whenever i oc it says it failed, i go into bios do the exact same settings oc works perfectly fine, run prime95 and no errors? hmm..
i was also thinking of moving to a i7 build!

Read yesterday about the new Xeon 74xx 6-core serie.
Can't really tell for sure if it will also be available for 771 socket.
However that would shine another light on the Asus z7s.
Enough future upgrade power available for the upcoming year(s)
I will stick with my z7s for the moment.

Hexacores will be socket 603 (or 604? one of those) only. You also need a quad socket mobo to utilize the full potential of these CPUs.. even though they are old tech, FSB266, 65nm and such. I'm willing to bet a high clocked Gainstown (Dual Nehalem) won't be much slower, if slower at all.
Also 4 of these CPUs will be ridiculously expensive, like in the 20k $ range with mobo and ram.
