I specifically looked for, and bought, an E8500 E0 with VID of 1.25V and it runs much cooler at the same speeds, even with higher vcore than the E8600.

With Wolfdale, I have found (with E8600/E7200 and E5200) that the higher VID's are definately running cooler and therefore are better for air cooling.
