    p5ew64 ws evolution & e8600

    Hi Holmer/Rob,[PHP]

Thanks again for the continued advice and help ........

Glad also to report back that my system is now stable with IBT, Orthos and OCCT !!! The usual windows freeze after notification of dreamscape failing to load at OC and often at default settings is gone gone gone .........

Had to add 2nd fan to my Xigamatek 964 (using this due to height constraint of about 110mm in my Silverstone LC017 HTPC casing) and CPU temp at idle and load dropped by about 10C and 5C to around 40C and 65C respectively but not sure if this is indeed the main issue since with one fan, idle temp is about 48C and load around 70C which I thought is still OK. 2nd fan certainly improved the airflow to rear exhaust fans and also pasted a 70mm fan on top of the NB with 3M heat sensitive tape @1700 rpm ..... Note that this is at non-airconditioned room temp of about 28-30C ... yes, this is in tropical Singapore. Remembered that what got me stable was especially after setting CPU GTL at 0.63X as mentioned in the GTL link from Rob on having Wolfdale preferable at lower CPU GTL of 0.63X but LCC at Performance still does not work.

    System:
    Mobo : p5e64 ws evolution
    CPU : e8600
Hsf : Xigamatek 964 with 2X Scythe 92mm Blue LED @2400RPM push-pull fans with speed control
    RAM : 2x2G DDR3-1600 Cosair c9 DHX
    GPUs : 4870X2 Crossfire
    PSU : Aerocool 1020W
    Display : Dell 3007
    Casing : Silverstone LC017
    Harddisk: 2X Samsung Spinpoint 750G
Drives : LG Blueray/HDVD ROM and DVD RW
Fans : 2 intake 92mm Scythe @2800rpm LED, 2 exhaust 80mm orange Thermaltake 3800 rpm fans (great quiet fans) as well as Aerocool PSU 140mm fan and 80mm fan on 2X4870X2

Anyway, stable setting for my modest OC at 4GHz is as follows for reference to e8600:

    BIOS build: 602
    Ai Overclock Tuner: Manual
    CPU Ratio setting: 10
FSB strap to North Bridge: 333
    FSB Frequency: 400

    DRAM Skew Control: Auto
    Ai Clock Twister: Auto
    Ai Transaction Booster: Auto

CPU Voltage: 1.3475 (CPUZ at 1.280 load to 1.312v idle ... fluctuation of this mobo up to 5 steps??? at normal LLC or my Aerocool 1020WPSU issue??)
    CPU GTL Voltage Reference 0.63x
    CPU PLL Voltage 1.56
    FSB Termination Voltage 1.30
    DRAM Voltage 1.76
    NB Voltage 1.41
    NB GTL Voltage Reference 0.67
    SB Voltage 1.20
    Clock Over-Charging Voltage Auto

    Load-Line Calibration Normal
    CPU Spread Spectrum Disable
    PCIE Spread Spectrum Disable
    CPU Clock Skew Delay Auto
    NB Clock Skew Delay Auto

CIE, TM, Speedtrap etc. all disabled

I will try to reduce some the settings e.g. Vcore of 1.3475v, CPU PLL from 1.56, NB Voltage from 1.45 etc. and any further advice on what is not necessary in my listed settings would certainly be appreciated.

    Regards,

    Hi Phil,

You reminded me on the vdroop which I mentioned to be 1.280v load to 1.312v idle or 0.032 !! which I now realised is common with this mobo and managed to find this at a Japanese site:

    http://www012.upp.so-net.ne.jp/ohij2/evolution.htm

Had not done pencil mod before but had certainly read about it ... still hesitating to try due to lack of verification knowledge and I am "OK" with my current modest OC of 4.0GHz for my e8600.

    Regards,

    Richard

    Hi Fitseries3,

I did not note the error msg during BSOD when my OC was not stable but google on your reported error msg indicates hardware failure ... one reported removal of Norton Anti-virus resolved his same BSOD??

Since I noted from your signature that you have the Nvidia gtx260 and also the same ATI 4870X2 crossfire, would it be driver conflicts? You may want to clean out nvidia drivers thoroughly from many hits on google and reinstall the ATI drivers to try again with minimal OC or default.

Unfortunately, it also means that if you continue to fail to find out the reason, you may have to get the minimum hardware setup and add back each hardware until it give you the same error msg again.

Hope it is not your QX9650.

    Regards,

    Richard

    Holmer, Rob,

Bad news ....... I am still getting windows freeze. This happen especially after windows startup programs gets loaded .......does this means that the OC system is stable but there are other drivers, softwares etc. programs or that it is still hardware and OC related.

    Regards, Richard

    Hi Richard

It is hard to say whether it is OC or software related. How do you define stability (you write it was stable in IBT, Orthos and OCCT but for how long)? If you believe you Windows/driver install is corrump you know the drill. My wild guess is it may be OC related (maybe RAM/NB issues requirering a higher NB voltage or too low v-core (v-drop is huge with LLC Normal your PSU is probably fine)).

    #All
I have uploaded a txt file with OC related BIOS settings. This can be used by everyone (by printing it out from Execl) to easily systematically test settings when overclocking.

Display frequency problems under Vista x64

    Hi,
if I run the board with 400 MhZ to CPU (multi 8 = 3200) and Memory (DDR3 = 1600) I always get a frequency of 2,66 MhZ displayed in the Vista system overview although CPU ID displays 3,2 MhZ.
The above is true for enabled or disabled C1E function in the boards bios.

    Any idea?

(i am using an Enermax Infiniti 720W PSU btw.) is that double start issue BIOS/motherboard related?

I had the double start thing on P5W-DH,P5K Deluxe,P5E-VM HDMI and P5E WS Evolution of course its a common thing with Asus mobos.

    Hi,
after some testing I found that with CPU-ID the CPU spped is listed at 3,2 GHz and only windows displays a "wrong" speed number. Any experience with that issue?

    Hi Holmer/Rob,

Glad to report back that my system is happily running with e8600@4.0GHz. Believe the reason for the previous freeze when window startup is due to some error in the CCC profiles which I created to manage the heat from the 4870X2 Xfire. My settings are as follows:

    -P5e64 ws evolution BIOS 0601
    -e8600 with xigamatek 964 hsf

    Hi Richard
Good to hear you solved the problem. Very fine settings. If you are still in the mood of tweaking the next step is to tighten the memory subsystem (assuming your CPU is at the max for your cooling). I am currently running with the following (24h+ Prime95 + game stable) settings to give you some inspiration:

    CPU Ratio setting: 10.0
FSB strap to North Bridge: 333
    FSB Frequency: 425
    PCIE Frequency: 100
    DRAM Frequency: 1701
    DRAM Command rate: 1N

    DRAM Timing Control: Manual
    1st Information:
    CAS Latency 8
    RAS to CAS Delay 7
    RAS to PRE Time 7
    RAS ACT Time 18
    RAS to RAS Delay 5
    REF Cycle Time 60
    Write Recovery Time 10
    READ to PRE Time 5

    The rest like you

Ai Transaction Booster: Manual -> Common Performance Level 6

    CPU Voltage: 1.46875
    CPU GTL Voltage Reference 0.65
    CPU PPL Voltage 1.56
    FSB Termination Voltage 1.32
    DRAM Voltage 1.86
NB Voltage 1.59 (more than that turned out to be unstable in games)
    NB GTL Voltage Reference 0.67
    SB Voltage 1.05
    Clock Over-Charging Voltage A

These settings give me in Everest Ultimate 4.6 (rough numbers):
    Read: 11290
    Write: 8930
    Copy: 9390
    Latency: 45.7 (nice)

You get the most noticable performance gain by lowering the Common Performance level (in the Ai Transaction Booster menu). However, keep in mind tightening especially this requires an increase in NB voltage. Move slowly when tightening timings it is hard to tell what your memory and NB can handle.
    Happy tweaking mate!

    Hi!

I have some problems with this mobo...

    CPU: E3110
    RAM: Corsair CM3X 1024-1800C7DIN
    PSU: Ikonik 800W
    GPU: Asus HD 4850 TOP
    WaterColling

My RAM is running with th XMP and system running with FSB 450 and RAM 1800 MHz. CPU speed is 3150MHz with multplier x 7.
    It's looking stable for SPi 1M, 8M, 16M, Orthos 30min ( I don't have much more time) and 3D Mark test... but...
AI SUITE program from supported DVD doesn't work, sometimes the CPU-Z stop working... On default settings everything operating normally...
Please look for my BIOS setup...
    I need some advice...

    Thanks!

    Hello again

Intel paper-sheets say max Vnb is 1.375v. Many of you guys are running way above that. How's the stability?

I'm testing 4x2GB sticks for a total of 8GB. At 500FSB with 8GB 1333mhz, Vnb doesn't seem to do affect much. I'm at 1.35v. Many people say I need way above 1.4v to get 8GB stable. 8GB seem to be affected way more by the timmings than the Vnb.

I will test this some more and I'll post results.

    Bye

    Definitely unnecessary in my case to have Vnb above 1.3v. Currently running 1.29v for 500FSB 8GB DDR3 1333mhz 8-8-8-28 1T. IBT/memtest stable.

oddly enough, it appears during my tests I either killed my PSU or my HD4870x2 lol.
    I thought 700w 70amps (3x 18 + 1x 20 rails) were enough.
