    According to this a 4870 with 1gb of gddr5 uses only ~20 more watts than a 4850. The 512 4870 uses 36 more watts. I think most of the difference in power consumption is due to the 125MHz core gain which bofox already mentioned. Show me a 4850 at 4870 clocks and then lets do a comparison.

    I can show you a 4870 512 clocked to 900MHz and 300MHz:



    That is power consumed from the PSU. From the wall, assuming 80% efficiency of my Odin 800W, that makes 31.25W difference. I was a bit wrong before. Also, if you want to see how core clock affects, see below:



    As you see, core clock means close to nothing. 300MHz less means 3W less. GDDR5 speed, A LOT. Also see the voltage regulator current sensor in all cases.
