Xtreview.com said that Turbo Mode will only be available with Core i7 Extreme Edition. Mr Drwho?, is that really the truth?

Recently we reported that Intel will remove the planned limitation for low-end Bloomfield models overclock (memory and QPI bus). Those desiring to obtain the complete overclock possibility had to acquire the processor Core i7 Extreme 965 (3.2 GHz), which not only possess the high QPI frequency (6.4 GT/s against 4.8 GT/s in other models), but also come with unlocked multiplier.

However, as reports associate, the support of Turbo-regime will be available only for Core i7 Extreme 965 processors, which will obtain the unlocked multiplier.

Now all Bloomfield can overclock the memory and QPI bus. The thickness of memory frequency ratio can vary from 2x to 32x, and QPI bus- from 4x to 64x. The processors Core i7 920 (2.66 GHz) and Core i7 940 (2.93 GHz) come with the locked multiplier, which determines the core clock frequency. Accordingly, Intel Dynamic Speed Technology will not be supported.

All Core i7 have Turbo, but only the extreme edition has unlocked Turbo, it is exactly like Core 2.

See, that is a great question. Memory performance has been suffering under the ES chips/boards (from the stuff I've seen), so it would be interesting to see if there are large gains in the faster memory, or if there is a memory speed beyond which things plateau. On the other hand, having some solid state drives, etc. might up the possibilities as well. It would be nice to see a coherent look at just what the system bus speeds/memory system promises.

Given the past performance of Ballistix Tracers, there should be a lot of overclocking headroom

I keep saying that you will be better to look for modules with 1.5V to start with ... people really concidere this, some hight voltage modules will not start at all, so, you will not have the opportunity to set their voltage in the bios.
I am talking about over 1.8Volts. ( to protect your CPU , the default setting will not allow more than this, and many modules refuse to under volt/clock)

I read you 5x5 DrWho. I'll be going with 1.55 or lower. We can always clock up, but if you get stuck where you can't clock down you are screwed if the thing won't boot. If it came to that, I'd rather have slightly lower clocks, than no clocks at all. This thing is already a Bandwidth monster anyway so I don't see what the 1.55 sticks would hurt at all.

SSD's just aren't mature enough yet, and I'm not quite ready to take the plunge on them yet. Maybe in a couple years when the capacity gets up over 150GB and the price gets to 1 dollar per GB or better. Sequential speeds also need a boost. For now I'm very happy with the WD Velociraptor at 150Gb for my OS and games. I have a RADI array with dual mirrored 160's, and a fairly fast 16MB cache 2500KS drive that is SATA II for storage and video.

On the memory "Guess why"? Compatibility I'd say. At least I assume that since they've came up with the new JEDEC standard. I'm not gonna risk compatibility or the CPU or the controller. I'll run what is reccomended...whatever it takes.

I will venture a guess ...

http://www.sematech.org/meetings/arc...ng_HiKGate.pdf (page 32) .... it may be the high-k materials suffer from higher rates of degradation at higher voltages overall, and hence one may want to limit the max allowable voltage on the IMC in order ensure the 3 yr warrantee.

EDIT: FYI ... multipliers (actually memory dividers) and voltages are not synonymous.

If this will do 4000mhz 24/7 @100% load with good air or water cooling it's a winner in my book. I know some of you want much higher speeds for benching,etc but there just may be the reality that for that kind of use the yorkies or wolfdales may be the better choice.
I mean take a look at what people are doing with the E8600 E0's..
6500mhz and SP1m times under 7 seconds..
I don't think this one is going to be equal in those areas but will rule in others.
That's just what I think, not what I know..

Ok, so Core i7 920 (2,66 GHz) will have default multiplier 20x but with Turbo Mode it can raise two speed bins to -> 22x 133 MHz = 2,93 GHz

Core i7 940 (2,93 GHz) will have default multiplier 22x but with Turbo Mode it can raise two speed bins to 24x 133 MHz = 3,2 GHz.

Core i7 Extreme Edition 965 (3,2 GHz) will have unlocked Turbo -> 2 or more speed bins = 3,466 GHz or more.
