if it does it during a normal windows reboot chances are youll be faced with "Overclocking settings failed!" press F1.
i think the board needs to shut down in order to change certain settings, as seen when exiting bios.
during cold boot it probrobly boots a default "safe mode" first, to verify it can, then quickly shutsdown and loads your custom settings. or something to that effect.

Yeah, it's not the cold boot/overclock failed thing. I'm not even touching the bios at this time...just rebooting to go from linux to windows or vice versa. Just a momentary power drop off...it always comes right back...but it may be that it's just on the verge of the failed overclock bios reset. I had that happen once after priming for 24 hours (which passed with flying colors, after 20 cycles of IBT)...reboot, then I got power-off overclock failure, lost bios settings (which I just restored from the OC profile, but still....)...so I don't know if this means I'm teetering on the edge or not![]()

Hmmmm, I get POST everytime.
I wouldn't say that was normal for a cold boot. I've used loads of PCs before, and this is the only time I've known that a PC spins up, drops and then spins back up again. I wouldn't call it a major issue atm, just a minor annoyance. As every time it drops, I think "oh crap".
I must point out, it only happens when I'm starting the machine for the first time (doesn't happen during reboots).
Yeah it also does that, when I change BIOS settings, and F10 and exit.

Interesting...I'm using 1201 bios...but, it happens during every reboot. I don't notice anything like it during power up. But when you say 'drops' do you get a distinct power-off event (i.e., power light goes out momentarily) or just a dip in power level? The later is what I am seeing. It sounds like you may be describing a different phenomena than I am experiencing (except for the fact that what I observed happens on every reboot).

What you guys are getting from a Cold Boot, ie; Power has been off from the board, is normal. The Board is resetting the registers for the OC when it does this. All my previous 775 boards did this as well.
As to the Reboot with it shutting down/back up etc, This is not normal. My guess would be not enuff NB voltage, but not knowing the system it is plainly that, "just a guess". I would be pretty annoyed if this persisted tho and probably would RMA the board.. but then thats just me...

Wow, I think I am experiencing something unusual then. Mine isn't shutting off, the power just fluctuates down for a split second...just long enough for me to notice it during reboots...nobody else seeing this? On power up, I get no fluctuation (or power off) of any kind...comes straight up.

Hi, can you guys help me? I have a p5q deluxe, and I am having trouble getting it to 400fsb, while my p5k runs 500fsb without a hitch... I really dont know where to begin with voltages, so ive been kind of poking at it, but seeing a working example would really help.
Here is some more info, sorry for the double post. I have 2x1gb Crucial Tracer DDR2-800, which have been running in my amd rig at 500mhz at 5-5-5-18/2.2v for a few months now without a hitch, and I have never bothered to tweak the timings lower. My psu is a OCZ Stealth 600w. My CPU is a X6800 ES, Stepping 6, B2 which has been known to do 4ghz on other mobos. Here is my setup:
Thats my stock setup. If I try to do 400x7 with memory at 800, it never works at stock voltages. I've tried bumping up the voltages for the nb/sb little by little, but that never helped and I didn't want to go too high. Any help? A filled out template for me to try would be great... *hint hint*. Oh, and the default values for the voltages are not the "auto" setting, they are just the default voltage that I could not remember off the top of my head.Code:ASUS P5Q DLX Template : JumperFree Configuration Settings AI Overclock tuner: MANUAL CPU Ratio Setting: 11 FSB Strap to North Bridge: 266 FSB Frequency: 266 PCI-E Frequency: 10 DRAM Frequency: 800 DRAM CLK Skew on Channel A1: AUTO DRAM CLK Skew on Channel A2: AUTO DRAM CLK Skew on Channel B1: AUTO DRAM CLK Skew on Channel B2: AUTO DRAM Timing Control: AUTO DRAM Static Read Control: Disabled DRAM Read Training: Disabled MEM. Ok...I've got some more data now. What I was seeing was what I thought it was...a bios on the edge of a cold boot reset. I happened after about a dozen reboots...it finally cold booted then hung and I got a failed overclock. Interesting thing I discovered was that it wasn't a function of my NB volts...those are low for my overclock, but raising them had no effect. It was my DIMM volts. As I bumped them up...the the cold-boot went away. Then I bumped the vDIMM higher and the 'power dip' became much less pronounced. I hit the max vDIMM for my memory at 2.02v (factoring in the .08 overvolts of this MB) which is reality was 2.1v...the max volts for my memory. The reboot power-dip is still there, but much less pronounced than before....so, how to interpret this? First, a power fade on reboot means you are really close to a cold reboot bios reset condition. Your memory (or some other part) is just on the edge of losing it's stable bios settings. Second, my memory system is barely keeping up....I know my kit isn't OVL certified (though it's more overclocked cousins are)...but I am also very close to the rated specs for this memory (1006 vs 1000). So, I may have a marginal memory kit...time to RMA I think....the memory, that is.

@ platojones - I had exactly the same thing occurring with my P5Q-Deluxe. It was like a fast pulse of low power, fans would drop rpm slightly, it would happen and return to normal in about half a second. It seemed to be a 'feature' of my board, as I tried bumping up voltages thinking it was almost failing POST (although it was totally stable using Orthos, Linpack, memtest and gaming), but it did not alleviate the issue. I think yours may have been more pronounced, and by upping the vdimm you got it to where mine was; slightly present.
The thing is, my Maximus II Formula does not do it, even when using less vdimm that I was on the deluxe, and the same vcore, vFSB, vNB and vSB.
What vFSB & vNB are you using on your board?
One thing you could try - raise the vFSB a little. Try to keep the maximum vdiff between the vFSB and vNB less than 0.12v, such that the vNB is no more than 0.12v higher than your vFSB.

Anyways I'm not a pro on Raid never used it don't plan on it but. I have had screwy BIOS issues happen. I know working your way down with Clearing CMOS/making new flash drive ect ect.
What sort of Raid bios setting do you have in there? Also do you have any problems with just 1 HD loading vista with either of these BIOS?

Thanks CryptiK...yes, what you described is exactly the symptom I have. I've got vNB at 1.24v and vFSB set at 1.14...but I haven't touched vFSB at all thinking I had it maxed. Read the intel spec sheet again, though, and it says you can go to 1.26v on vFSB...so I can try bumping that and see if that helps...but, yes, that power drop always give me the feeling it's going to fail post...and then it does sometimes.

Which intel spec sheet did you read the 1.26v max vFSB in? I'd like to read it. Mine although it always did it, never actually failed POST but every time it did it my heart would skip a beat, especially when going for high clocks on the cpu or ram.
Yeah it should be fine at that voltage. The NB cooling is good for a passive heatpipe setup, and on my Maximus II Formula which is very similar, it doesn't get over 52*C NB temp when I've been benching at 1.4 vNB in 23*C ambients.

Yep I have broke the raid down and the issue still persist with only one drive in it and I have tried each drive, by it self. I know I need to quit I have been making an effort to quit lately. It's not easy after ten or more years.

This board is confusing the hell out of me....
I struggled to get anything over 480fsb until reading back a load more pages of this thread. I tried 500fsb with the following settings below for a quick "dirty" overclock and within 2 minutes prime blend fails. I then read a post of CryptiK's about 499fsb being stable, I left all settings below the same but notched down from 500 to 499 and I've been nearly 2 hours blend stable and am playing World of Warcraft at the same time. Also, I'm suprised that I can't bring DRAM RAS# Activate to Precharge down to 15 without instability.
