I hate you all. I need 1.325 bios Vcore for 3.6 with Q9550, although max load temp with that is 65c at 28c ambient. Even with that, I can prime for 24 hours and still lock up just opening FireFox Now clocked down to 3.2 (377x8.5) at 1.2375 bios Vcore, no more lock ups.

Sounds like you need to find a reason to RMA
Intel RMA is fast and easy.
But try playing around with it first, higher vNB, pump vCore with impunity.
You could always kill it, then RMA...

Well, the chip is an OEM from a Dell. If let's say, it accidentally got too much voltage through it, would I have to RMA to Intel or Dell?

ooh bugger. I don't think you can do an intel RMA unless it came with the intel stock HSF. I'm not sure what Dell's policies are.
I mean, you could call intel about it, but when I RMA'd my Q9450 they asked for a bunch of info off the HSF.

If not, i'm sure it would fetch 300 bones on ebay and you could pick up one of those fancy 8600's everyone's talking about =]

1.325v isn't really high for vcore and even Intel said 1.3875v or so (don't remember the exact #) and they are usually very conservative. I personally don't like full load temps over 60C though.

he's talkling about purposely frying it.

you could fry this chip with about 1.6v over a few hours.

I gues he just got a bad one i think, a good board also helps a lot with these 45nm quads.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the X38 is holding me back. I hit an FSB wall @ 440.

X38 is definitely a restricting chipset.
Don't get me wrong, E0 stepping cpus have definitely proven their worth, but I've been through 2 C1 Q9450s and they're both champion clockers.
So before you fry your Q9550 for an RMA, I'd consider picking up a nice Biostar Tpower I45 and really unlocking the 4+ghz potential of your cpu.
Because really, if my Q9450 can hit 4ghz, most Q9550s should be able to*

    *p45 chipset required...

Disable it and set it back to 3.6 with slightly more vcore and just start using your pc, if it doesnt lock up anymore start priming.

I just tried the "crazy" setting in RF bios and right now it's at 3.5 (412x8.5) and RAM at 495 (5:6). Vcore is at 1.280 CPUZ. I'll see how this goes for a while. BTW, lockups/reboots were very random with no BSOD.

Well, LLC caused a lot of problems for people on the early Rampage boards (Read the early pages of the Rampage section) and i know this was/is a issue for more Asus boards.
24/7 Prime stable and random crashes during surfing or idle, problems where solved by disabling LLC and pencil mods.

BTW in case you didnt know, watch out with auto/preset modes.
They are pumping a lot of un needed voltage trough components what dont even need a lot of voltage.
I reached my 3.7 with only a raise of the VCore and NB voltage.

Probably you have to change your mobo with P45 chip:

    GA-X58A-UD9
    I7-970
    KHX2000C9D3T1K3 3 x 2GB
    HALE90-1000-M

Is that with your Xeon in sig?
That's a tough chip to compare with Q9450, +0.5 multi makes it a whole new world.

Well not really, ok it got a half multiplier more but it aint superior compared with a Q9450/X3350.
Look @ angelreaper he doesnt need as much voltage as me on he's chip but he should look out with he's 4Ghz IBT runs or else he would kill he's cpu really quick.

Yeah i was aiming @ he's temps, way to high.
My pc is prime stable with a max temp of 71c, i also ran IBT but my temps went sky high within a few seconds so i aborted that run.
IBT is good but you will never reach does tempratures with normal usage, so for me no IBT torture on my cpu.

My guess is his temps got even higher than that screenie.
but imo 1.36 is a relatively safe voltage for these chips.

I'm gonna ask this again jic, does anyone have this chip on a 790i board?
