    HD4870+HR-03GT = insane vdcc temps?

well when i bought the hd4870 after it came out with all the talks about the how high the temps of the gpu get, i decided to payup and go for the best cooling solution at the time, which was the HR and i had a 120mm scythe fan attached to it for good measure.
at first seeing the gpu idle temp at 40c and a load temp of 55-60c i thought i made a good choice.
but now with gpuz showing all the temps of all the components i find that the vdcc chips are idling at around 70c , and loading at an insane 125-136c temp(the load pic didn't reach it's highest)...
now i didn't get a cooler to lower my gpu temp only to fry other parts of the card, not to mention the cooling solution takes 4 slots on the motherboard so it's supposed to be worth it.
are those temps as dangerous as i think they are? should i try and return the cooler(though it's been like two months..) and have them install my stock again? because i think rather have everything at 80-90c than have one thing going supernova.

that is something I noticed in a vga cooler review, the HR-03 had high PCB temps, higher than stock

you can try tag another fan onto your current one to have more airflow blowing down on the VRM area and see if that makes any difference.

you need heatsinks and airflow on your VRM's or you will kill your card. if you aren't willing to do that, go back to the stock cooler. also, the Thermalright T-Rad2 works much better on these cards. it keeps the GPU and VRM's cooler.

    lol ouch

Yeah as others have said you can't run that beast without decent airflow and sinks. Have a look at the watercooling 4870 thread to find out what needs a sink and what doesn't.

i thought the hr-03 came with heatsinks that are supposed to fit on everything on the card so i am not sure if it's missing heatsinks? assuming i can get more individual heatsinks(which i'm not entirely sure i can find in stores here), how am i supposed to get more airflow on them, the 120mm fan on the heatsink is already oversized for it..

Use a side fan on your case side, an antec spotcool or ziptie a small fan right over the vrm area.

damn, apparently the vrms are missing heatsinks(checked today) http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum...review-21.html
it's set-up like that with those 3 uncovered(are those the ones overheating?). the review says there should have been enough heatsinks to cover them all.. i don't have any left, damn shop must have kept the leftovers after the installation. going to try and call them and get them to send me some heatsinks for free and hopefully if i try to install them and not ruing anything it'll help the temps. i already got a 120mm sidefan in my case, and it has good airflow since it's pretty empty and all the cables are arranged so they aren't going all over the inside.

i don't think those three big chips need heatsinks on them. the VRM's are the ones behind those chips that have the long heatsinks on them.

your problem is you have smallish heatsinks on your VRM's and probably very little airflow blowing directly on them. try temporarily putting a fan blowing directly on them and test again. you should notice dramatically lower temps.
