I used to have the problems you mentioned and then my older PSU went "poof".

When I purchased a new PSU with better specifications than my previous one, both S3 Standby and Hibernate worked much better. It's possible that the +5vbs line may be not providing sufficient current to the board.

What made the S3 Standby totally solid with no further problems of any kind was to also make sure UEFI boot was not enabled (you'll see it in the boot menu of the BIOS).
