The Banana Collector 2: The Point of No Return

Hello guys, how are you doing ?
    -Damn, it's him again!

It's been quite a long time since my last LN2 benching session right ?
Today I found some free time and decided to test some more E8600's ( Q822A's ) on my... not so trusty Asus P5E64 WS Evolution motherboard.

Like the movies, the sequels are worst than the first movie ( in most cases ) and usually the movies end with a bad third part ( coming soon ? More than likely ).

I showed you my first few sucky E8600's here ( The Banana Collector )

Today's the big day... I'm here to give you the sequel:

The Banana Collector 2: The Point of No Return

    I tested 3 E8600's ( Q822A45x batch ).
    The first sucked...really... is 5.6GHz max benchable Pi 1M at 1.85V a good result ? I don't think so.
    The second one sucked as well. Max stable 5.7GHz ( 1.926V ) ( SuperPi 32M, wPrime 1024m, 3D Marks, etc ), and max SuperPi 1M @ 5.89GHz at 2.04V!
    The third one... guess what:
It sucked as well! Ha ha ha
    Cold-bug at -159C, Cold-Boot at -122C
    Max Stable = 5.8GHz ( 1.978V )
    Max SuperPi 1M @ 5.99GHz ( 2.113V )

I also "lost" my best GTX 280 that gave me artifacts for no apparent reason
    That card rocked
Max benchable on air 771MHz/1566MHz/GDDR3-2808(artifact-free) on stock cooler & stock voltages

I've got some E8600's to test next week... they better give me one good chip this time 'cause I'm about to f* quit this "sport" now.

Nothing special... some typical 32M runs ( 8min 2x secs ), and some soft 3D ( aquamark 3 @ 34x.000 ) due to low VGA clocks ( 710/1512/1250 ), and no tweaking ( was frustrated enough... I caught myself spraying LN2 all around the room ).

sad to read about this Bill, but dont give up, many times ocing is about luck, to get a gem cpu, mobo, ram ect, but your skills are well known, everybody knows that you are able to do some high scores if you will got finally a good chip, so lets make a 8600 WANTED FOR BILL thread and wait for somebody to help you... sadly i cant, i also have an avarage chip, 6G 3D on ln2 or so, but if you want it just let me know
    anyway, keep handpicking it

Sorry to hear about your bad luck, BZ. Count your blessings, though, some of us have neither an E8600 nor LN2 to play with. Keep on truckin, man!

i tested EVO with 8600 all over this weekend, it clocks really nice with, but you have to find the good bios options and voltages, this mobo is not RE

if i can help with, my settings & air results: EVO+86

If I were you I'd buy a Biostar mobo (or something else that's good and not too expensive) so you can check if it's the board or something. Pretty insane if all those chips are actually that bad

Try to buy some pre-tested chips off ebay or something.

Some E8600's... you can call it tough luck.
But with the recent history... QX9650s/QX9770s, E8500s, E8600s... that's bad luck.
There are two types of luck... "bad luck" and "bad karma".
    I've got both of them

Tried them on other boards on air, but the max stable FSBs on air weren't good enough to make me insulate those mobos for LN2 ( ~600MHz on the P5Q3 Deluxe, 580MHz on the P5K3 Deluxe, 560MHz on the GA-EP45-DS5, 585MHz on the Striker II Extreme ).

    Check above.

With my luck... I could visit one of Intel's fabs, pick up 100 E8600s and still get away without a single good chip ( even a 6GHz Pi32M & 3D chip would satisfy my "needs" now, but even that looks so far away )

I'd rather erase my memory and forget everything about overclocking, etc, than having the opportunity to play with that kind of cooling and crappy hardware.

Yeap, the Evo needs some real tweaking to get the E8xxx's at 600+ FSBs.
I have a paper with my stable FSB settings on air for 580MHz/590MHz/600MHz/610MHz/620MHz for every CPU...
With my luck I just end up using 600MHz / 610MHz FSB with a 9.5x CPU multiplier anyways

    Someone said Banana

I´m totally with you, BZ. Don´t be too frustrated, sometimes there are good times, and then there are bad times, but then again there are good times (and freaking good hardware)

OMG you have the worst luck ever, either that or the people that manage to get hold of 6.2+ GHz benchable 8600's must go through a ridiculous number of them before finding a good one. Keep your head up, and hopefully when you try them on the biostar you find you have a couple of decent ones. It may indeed be the mobo's not handling those clocks, despite the fact you've tested on a couple boards, they have not been consistently proven at high FSB, like the RE & Biostar are.

BZ Im going to be selling my Biostar Tpower soon (one last dry ice run to go). Its hit 630fsb with my 8500. Im just going to test my 8600 on it and then get rid of it. Selling my GA-X38-DQ6 too for some cash to buy Rampage Extreme

Sorry about your luck, Yorkfield was nothing but a curse for me, but Wolfdale lifted that...hopefully you find your cherry soon. But this is the Xtreme Overclocking section so please post some results or I'll have to move this thread out of here.

And as others have said I don't think it's humanly possible to go through that many E8600's and not hit 6, especially since almost all the ones you've talked about are able to reach cold temperatures. I have a P5E64 Evolution and I...don't like it very much...I'll leave it at that. I think that at this point in time you need to get your hands on a guaranteed killer Wolf clocking board, as something besides the CPU's is the issue here. I'd recommend the P5Q3 you have first (the FSB will increase when you go cold), but if that fails something like a Rampage Extreme or DFI P45 might be in order...

I spent months sitting on one chip that did 5970 and another that 6070, and this was back when even 5800 was out of the ordinary. Meanwhile the whole time I thought my luck was horrible as I could never get past 5.6GHz...the problem? The lack of a Rampage Extreme.

I'll give these chips a spin on two new boards ( Rampage Extreme & Biostar Tpower i45 ) soon ( 1-3 weeks ).
I hope it's like your saying... if not... then I guess that's it for me.

Had a chance to test 5 of my E8600s on a LN2 today with a friend's Rampage Extreme... nope, no luck.
They gained some FSB, but the max OCs were about the same ( 2 of them went ~100MHz higher, and the other 3 did about the same as on the Evo )

    LOL.

Just tried to do some air-cooled tests on the Striker II Extreme with my newest E8600... max benchable on air ( ThermalRight Ultra-120 Extreme ) is around 4.5GHz... and definitely under 4.65GHz.
    Priceless.
