    Guys,
I bought this board and it's been a dream so far. I bought a new graphics card and now I'm having an odd problem - here's the situation.
I am watercooling my CPU. I put the board in, went into BIOS without doing any settings research on here, and overclocked to 4.0 Ghz (the same as I had been running on my old motherboard).
I simply changed the vcore, changed the RAM volts, FSB (400), ratio (10), disabled spread spectrum and all features on the CPU config page, set the ram ~800, turned off Mem OC charger.

I tested it and it was prime stable (blend and cpu only), 3dmark stable, games stable.

Yesterday, I bought a 4870 X2 and stuck it in. Computer would not post until I pulled out the power cord, put it back in, and restarted. It posted at reduced settings.
I took it to default settings and it booted no problems. I tried OC'd settings again and it failed. Next time, I tried only changing the minimum number of settings to achieve 4 ghz, leaving all the "extra" features on,
but I gave it some extra volts on the motherboard voltages. It booted no problem. I then put back the original OC'd settings, but with the higher voltages. It did not post. I went back in and turned on the 2 spread spectrum settings.
It posted, and I put the motherboard voltages back to stock, and it still posted. It passed all stability tests, although it felt perhaps a tad sluggish to me. I noticed also that it had scored 200 points lower on the CPU portion of the 3dmark test than it had with the old graphics card.

What's going on? This makes no sense to me - I've never heard of the graphics card affecting the overclock. Does anyone have any suggestions that might be useful, or insight as to what could be going on here?

I just noticed that Windows Explorer has crashed the last couple times I started the computer. ???

Keep in mind, this has only happened since putting in this new GPU. Is there any way other than PSU that the GPU could be affecting the rest of the system like this?

I do know that the 4870 X2 does not play nice with some boards, what BIOS version are you running? the latest is 1307

I upgraded tonight to 1307. Spent my whole night trying to fix this weird thing. Finally, I pulled out the 4870 X2 and put back in the GTX 280 and everything is working correctly again. It's like my system is allergic to the 4870! Very strange.

Hmm when running crossfire it does affect overclocking (there are crossfire overclock settings posted earlier in this thread) just like running 4x1GB vs. 2x2GB does affect clocking and volts. And the X2 is running internal crossfire. But you problems doses'nt seem to have anything to do with this. Give Asus a call?

Thank you to the couple of you who offered some help...here's an update after my night's adventures. While the ATI card was still in, I downloaded IntelBurnTest by AgentGOD and I couldn't get it to run for 1 second - it would immediately REBOOT the computer.
As I was saying, ever since I put in the ATI card, it felt like my system became very unstable - well here's proof of the pudding. I could not get IntelBurnTest to run with all my settings at stock/defaults. I tried tweaking them even to make it work - no luck.
After I put back in my GTX 280, I'm rock solid stable, passing the IntelBurnTest with flying colors - at 4 Ghz!
I don't know if it's just this card (I doubt it because the card was able to run 3dmarks and some games just fine) or if its an incompatibility with this motherboard, but I guess the beastly 4870 X2 is heading back to Fry's. I didn't need it that much anyway. :-(

You may need to up your Northbridge voltage, the 4870X2 probably puts more stress on it than the GTX 280 and combined with 400fsb, might just push it over the edge if stock... What are your current voltages?

What I was saying earlier is that with ALL settings stock/default in BIOS, meaning stock/default FSB and stock voltages, the motherboard would not run stable with the 4870. It will, of course, with the GTX 280. With the 280, I can be very experimental with my settings and voltages and the computer will still run MUCH more stable than it does at stock with the 4870 X2. Like I said, the card was able to run 3dmarks and some games, so I don't think this particular card has a problem - although I could be wrong. It would be helpful if someone else had this card and this motherboard and could comment on their experience.

I have the 4850 with the Maximus II formula. I don't know how close they are but the 4850 is solid. It will not oc but I think that is a factor of temp. It runs in the high sixties at best. Once I get it under water I hope to be able to get more out of it.
The CPU is seriously overclocked as per sig.

It's not a factor of temp, it's a factor of voltage.

I have my 4850 on an accelero S1 with a 120 strapped to it. It loads at around 36C, but pretty much any overclock was unstable.

Pencil mod took care of that, now it's stable at 700/1200 and I'm sure I could get more if i took the time to mod through BIOS instead of CCC.

    Ah, sorry, I misunderstood.

Still, might be worth bumping the vNB to 1.3v with everything else on stock just to see... perhaps bios does not cater properly for that much single slot load? Clutching at straws I know, lol.

Thanks for your suggestions...I'm actually wondering if it's possible that the PSU is actually the problem. Either somehow too much power on a rail, or maybe the PSU is dying. I might buy another PSU just to see if it fixes the problem...

I upgraded from 8800GTX to 4870 X2 without any issues. First thing I did was uninstall the Nvidia drivers, power down, swap the cards and powered up into Windows. Installed the Catalyst Software Suite 8.8 (54.3MB) rebooted and that's that.

I was using bios 0901 at the time and have since flashed to 1301 and have still not run into any problems. My NB voltage is set to 1.28 in the bios.

Has your PSU got 8 pin PCIE connectors or are you using an adaptor? What's your PCIE Freq in bios set to? 100? Sorry for the obvious questions - Gotta cover all the angles.
