I would doubt that the removal of that little scrap of metal dropped your temps even 1c on average. I do hope the problem is gone though. I feel your pain as I had problems like that for over a month, that I traced back to my 1600mhz ram. the 1800mhz ram that I have now, requires 1.65v to the NB to run 1N command rate, but I have no issues with crashing or freezing.
Oh, and I have 2 120mm fans pulling fresh air into my desk though. My temps are 2-3c cooler when the computer is sitting outside on the floor.
