Im buying E8400 and I found one quite cheap. Only problem is that VID is 1.225V (that looks quite high for me)
Batch is Q748A and it looks like quite different OC (from 4.2 with 1.3V to 4ghz with 1.4V) Owner told me that he overclocked it on 3.4Ghz with 1.225V (he isnt a very good overclocker) What should I do? Should I risk it?

It's still luck of the draw though. There isn't enough evidence yet to say for sure but generally when Intel updates a processor, the overclocking abilities increase as well. There are some nice Revisoin C0 chips in this thread that are better than X-Bit's E0 at the same voltage.
    True
But I'd like to see some E8600 bench fest

Ok, I have a few thoughts/questions. I have a Q6600 (GO), a Q9450 (CO) and an E8500 (CO) that I have been benchmarking against each other. My q6600 was my first quad, however I was able to get a Q9450 for $170 after the live.com rebate. The Q6600 is capable of running 3.725Ghz (416x9) 24/7 with no issues. The Q9450 has been able to hit 3.7Ghz (8x463) @1.44v, again, no stability issues. I got the E8500 because I knew I could overclock it even higher, in fact I had no problem doing 500x9, although the voltage was at 1.51v for stability, hadn't tweaked it yet, so I am sure I could come off of that. Temps on all three are no issue since I have watercooling, in fact under load the highest I hit was 63c (ambient is 27c) on one of the quad cores. Anyway, I am suprised by some of the results from benchmarks that I ran, keep in mind this was some limited testing, but still suprised me. I ran PI, 3DMark06, Vantage and did a conversion of a 4gb HD MPEG2 video to DIVX using Divx6.8 converter. I was expecting that the E8500 would blow the quads out of the water due to being able to hit almost a 1Ghz faster speed, but it didn't. Sure PI was faster, but for instance on 3DMark06 the Q9450 had a better score at 3.6Ghz than the E8500 at 4.5Ghz, only a couple of points mind you, but still. The biggest difference when you break down the score was the cpu score was much higher on the quad, same thing on Vantage, although the overall score wasn't even close. On PI the E8500 killed the two quads easily, but in the Divx conversion it wasn't until I hit 4500 on the E8500 before it overtook the Q9450. I know Divx 6.8 takes advantage of the multiple cores and the new instruction set, but I would have thought the higher FSB/CPU speed would have been able to take the Q9450 out. So I guess I have two questions for everyone here:

1 - Why wouldn't you get a Q6600 for the same price as the E8500 instead of an E8500? Yes, I do realize that the newer Q6600 don't overclock like the older ones, but just from reading in this thread I haven't seen too many folks willing to push their chips further than 4Ghz, so a Q6600 at 3.2Ghz (the new Par for them) should be just as good as the E8500 and it future proofs you.

2 - Is there a reason why many people are not pushing their chips pass the 4Ghz limit? I get the "keeping the voltage low" idea, but isn't the reason that everyone wants the E8400/E8500 is for the overclocking capabilities?

Maybe I am missing something as I had high hopes for the E8500, especially since I could probably run it on far less voltage than my Q6600 and have lower temps, but I am just not seeing it. My point is not to bash the E8500, so don't take it that way, I am just trying to find a reason to go to the E8500 from the quads and I can't find it.
    Convince me, please.

Thanks. THe batch is Q746A535 . 1.225 VID. Not amazing but certainly not bad either!
I got the same Q746A535 batch as you, gurusan, but my VID is listed as 1.125v in CoreTemp, the same as my previous E8400 (I returned as it had stuck temp diodes).

I was surprised yours was at 1.225 VID coming from the same batch as mine? But RealTemp shows my VID as 1.225?? At stock my voltage reads as 1.128v in CPU-Z...but I forgot I had C1E enabled! When I disabled C1E at stock settings, sure enough my voltage was at 1.20v, which is more like 1.225v with VDrop. My Xeon 3110 clocks to the exact same 4620MHz maximum as my previous E8400 did with 1.125 VID, (with 1.60v cpu and 1.2v VTT in bios.)

You must be using the older version of Coretemp to view your VID. The latest version 0.99.1 detects it correctly.

For the 1st question i can say that both of the E8xxx are fast, and u can get @ 4-4.3 GHZ stable for daily use...E8xxx are good for games ...that's all...q6600 are for ppl that works in 3dmax, autocad...thinks like that...i personaly prefer the E8xxx because it eats less power and it's a good overclocker...

For the 2nd question i can say the next thing...i cannot go over 4.0GHZ because my cooling is not so good (i'm on air, ZALMAN 9700), and i have a hot batch...at 4ghz i got 48 degres idle mode and 64 degres under load at high RPM and about 72 degres at low RPM...but at low RPM (72 degres load), u can get errors in orthos...u have water cooling...thats a big ++++ ...which water cooling are u using, and how much is it ?

W/C system is in my Sig. As far as cost, I stopped counting a long time ago, but if you look at retail on the items, then I guess....OMG.... I have an addiction, crap. Well, a lot.

Anyway, I will probably try out a few games instead of just 3Dmark06 and Vantage. I like the idea of saying "My system runs at 4.7Ghz, nah nah!" but seriously, I am having a hard time justifing it. Anyway, thoughts and opinions welcomed.

Run u're E8xxx at 4.5Ghz if u say u have WC, and run u're quad at what speed u want...test grid it's verry simple...enter the game and make a screenhoot with FRAPS at 4.5ghz and then with u're quad ...post it here...i'm really curios..u can do this think at all the games...

i just placed a small fan from a old pentium 3 heatsink on the backside of the mobo shelf since my case has holes there for vents and i got a really nice 3-4c drop overall all the way across the board maybe something for aircoolers to try if they need a few extra degrees..

Boy that info was old. As am I. Currently my kids have taken over my desktops. They are both sporting matching GTX1080's. Last Christmas I got everyone Oculuses and thus GTX1080's. My eldest is some sort of CSGO champion gold label something or other. Me I work and shoot real guns. Build Comps as needed.

A lot of users have been comparing VID numbers but some are quoting their minimum VID while others are quoting their maximum VID. Solution? RealTemp 2.70 which displays both values in the Settings window and the real time VID in the main window. You shouldn't have to play with your C1E settings either to see both of these numbers. I'm hoping users will start posting both values for some more accurate comparisons.

A quick way to change VID when using XP is to go into your Power Options and select Portable/Laptop. This should drop it down to the Minimum VID at idle and it should increase to Max VID at full load. On a laptop I've spotted 4 unique VID values during the transition from idle to full load.
