Thermalright Mosfet cooler vs Waterblocks?

Before you get ahead of yourselves, are Thermalright heatsinks polished Aluminum or are they Nickel Plated? (or maybe even anodized silver for corrosion protection)

They have to have some kind of coating, my old TRUE never corroded, or discolored.

I actually love the look of these things stock imho

thank-you ^^ i knew that i had seen somewhere that they were compatible for both the top and rear banks. i am quite disappointed that they overlooked this. like i said, all it takes is 10 seconds and a quick look and you can see there is no way to mount the top bank. obviously Thermalright has to make a different bracket to mount the top bank otherwise the whole point of this product is useless. i will levy as much pressure from my side as i can. i will keep this thread posted.

I also hope they release universal brackets and fix the size by the time I have to buy mosfet coolers since this would look much better than Type 2s.

Hey, I got it to work after all. I really liked the design and thought I'd give it a shot.

Disclaimer: This is an awful hack. It does, however, produce the correct result on an Evga 790i motherboard.

Tools required: Metal snips, Hammer (seriously)

The kit comes with 4 push-pin brackets. You want the ones that dress right, like this:



Cut the side opposite the push pin (the larger C) off completely. Bend the clip adjacent to the pushpin down so it fits snugly when attached to the end of the cooler. It'll look like this (or hopefully better):



Attach brackets to cooler, apply thermal pad, attach cooler to motherboard, push pins in. Done!



I wouldn't recommend anyone actually go out and buy one with the intent to do this, but I felt like sending it back was letting them win.

very nice work. there is obviously a way to accomplish anything, but consumers shouldn't have to resort to this type of 'manipulation' of the hardware to make it fit what it is designed to...or in this case, what it wasn't designed to. not one, but for not going quietly into the night

BTW, just got word from Thermalright that they are re-designing the clips and will be offering replacements free of charge to those that bought them for the 790i.

Wow those are great news 3oh6. Do you think you can find out if they are going to release Type 4 for all other motherboards? I dont have any problem using the Type 2 but like I said Type 4 looks sick

This is great news indeed, I really wanted to get these coolers.

i will let this thread know when if i receive any updates but i can't see it taking to long. we are talking about a clip here, nothing elaborate. keep an eye on this thread as it might not be a press release on Thermalright's web site .

as for the second part of your question, i'm not sure what you mean. if you are asking how will you know whether or not the heat sinks you are buying have the updated clips? i would imagine all retailers will get the updated clips and will simply add them to their existing stock. just guessing but that seems most sensible.

like i said, they will likely just get the new clips...the heat sink it self isn't a new design. Thermalright will likely just send out replacement clips to retailers who will in turn drop them in their existing stock.

i would simply contact Performance PCs and ask them if they have the updated clips yet and to contact you when they do. if they don't know what you are talking about, perhaps let them know about the compatibility issue and that Thermalright should have updated clips sometime soon. i would just hope that Thermalright would have let retailers know of the issue.

again, who knows if Thermalright will even inform retailers or send them updated clips directly...they argued with me for a long time saying the current clips fit so anything is possible it seems these days from them

I just notified performance-pcs and nothing yet, but there is a notification on thermalrights website saying:


* Please note our bracket for HR-09 type4 is not compatible with certain EVGA motherboards（like EVGA 132-CK-NF79-A1）. However, a new solution is under development and will be ready within a month.

sounds good...looks like Thermalright will let it be known when they have a new bracket done up. did Performance-PCs know about the issue?

Btw, someone told me Type 2 is kinda short for the Striker II Extreme. It leaves 1/2 of a mosfet uncovered (you can center it it to make it 1/4 of one mosfet on each side). I think they really need a Type 5 and make it universal this time.

Have you ever modded more than one brand MB? You'll know it can't be universal, unless all MB manufactures follow the intel original design for all their MB

But hopefully they don't, intel default designs s**ks

Not universal in that way, but universal in a way like "fits most asus boards", you know what I mean?, maybe something like "Compatible with X38/X48/790i ASUS boards", and of course include a list of compatibility just to make sure.
