How bad could 79c idle be then? I just got my card today, I do like the silence with the original fan settings though

Well overclocking it gives you a free performance boost and most people don't keep a card 5 years or how ever long the service life could be, because by then it'd be way obsolete.

As for it causeing premature death if it's cooled adequately it shouldn't hurt it after all they are rated for something like 120 degree's celsius however at that temperature it'd start to die fast.

Well from what I've read so far...alot been keeping up on every ATI and Nvidia card thread. Putting it upto 35% fan speed or so is still pretty silent yet cools it to below 60 degrees celcius at load

That is a very bold and ignorant statement, especially here at XtremeSystems. I'm not sure why ur here then?

Our purpose, copied from the home page:
"Xtreme Systems was originally developed as an exceptional forum around the world to work as a distributive computing team to push hardware and software to the maximum limits (over-clocking)."

The reality is that most people who overclock use aftermarket cooling, whether it be air, water or phase to keep temps down.

well if that is all it does, you're obviously blind. it's not about what happens in the end. it's about the ride, honey.

i'm using the 4850 for around 3 days now and the default fan settings are ok atm. ambient temp is around 22°C, gpu temp around 53°C (with fanspeed set to automatic/default). at load it hits around 86°C.

i'd suggest to use different profiles. before creating a profile in the ccc make sure you save the default settings as a separate profile. after that create profiles for e.g. 35% fanspeed, 45%, 50% and/or 65%. i'm using the default settings (automatic) at idle and change the profile to 45% before starting a game. 45% are more than enough to keep the gpu at a decent temperature (as far as the ambient temp isn't that high).

what i did notice though, is that after a coldstart the fan is absolutely silent, but after playing a game and going back to windows the fan NEVER reaches these low noise levels again, even though the temps are back to normal and some hours have already passed since the game was closed. dunno what's up with that.
i really hope the default "automatic"-fanalgorithm and powerplay feature will be improved in the next catalyst release. it's also strange that the gpu clocks only go down to 500mhz at idle. they could have easily clocked it even lower to reduce the temps etc.

it would be interesting to know how the temperature leads to a shorter lifetime.
if the card lives for 10 years @50°C and "only" 7 years @70°C then i wouldn't bother with the fan settings, as the card won't be in use for 7 years anyways

Your looking in the wrong place, i was looking there, intill i just used the windows search, the file is in C:\Documents and Settings\XXXX(your user name) \Local Settings\Application Data\ATI\ACE. If you still cant find it use the windows search, it will have the same file name as what you named the profile.

    RBE v1.12 is available!

    Check out the changelog:

    v1.12
    - Added display for GDDR5 (for 4870 and future cards).
    - Added check for corruption of GDDR5 BIOSes.
    - Fixed bug with all voltages being "---".
    - The lock for clock info is now unchecked by default.
    - Added command line feature for automated BIOS loading.
    - Added profile editor to edit CCC settings that can not be modified using the CCC.
    - Added support for 4870 X2 (experimental).
    - Fixed checked "pre-modified" checkbox on plain 4870 BIOSes.
    - Added more clock info modes to meet the needs of Radeon mobility BIOSes.
    - Improved some internal things.

Enjoy and try the new profile editor you guys helped to develop! Please don't hesitate to tell me your thoughts.

Okay, so no way to run this without overdrive enabled, right?

So how do I overclock over 790 with those settings?

Sorry it's been two years since I last used an ATI product

There aren't any other methods than this and BIOS flash, I think. What program would you recommend for monitoring temps?
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

i think the 2D clocks are high on these cards because ATI decided to handle that through the drivers instead of having it hard-coded into the BIOS. this is just a guess. but it will make them easier to change and fix things in the future? that's one of the reasons i'm waiting for the first official driver release before touching my BIOS on these cards.
