Depending on your video card, post some 3dmark 06 scores. We should Have a dual opteron Benchmark show down

My rig is 50% complete, still waiting on some watercooling components.

Here is a list of what i got so far
    2x opteron 285 dualcore at 2.6ghz
2x 1gig ddr3200 corsair ECC reg (low timings perfect for OC)
    supermicro h8dce Motherboard
    2x 36gig scsi drives 10 000rpm
    2x 500 gig sata2 7200rpm
    Adaptec Scsi raid card
    SoundBlaster X-fi music
Thermaltake Mozart Tx case (with misc fans and cooling accessories)
    Thermaltake PowerExpress GSPU 250W
    Coolermaster Extreme Power 500W

    Parts needed:
    Watercooling accessories
    2 more gigs of ram
    Videocard

I havent decided what video card to go with the new radeon 4870x2 or the geforce 9800gx2. My goal is 20k in 3kmark 06.

Im doing all this in one big build, All the parts i have so far are in the box, ill post my build thread when i got all my parts. Should be in the next 2 weeks or so

    Good morning

Let the Dual Opteron Showdown commence!

Download the same apps I listed (they should all be free iirc) and we can compare notes as msimax suggested. Please add benches to the list. Anyone know of more mandelbrots that we can use?

My video card is 7900GTO, so there won't be much competition against the dual gfxs your'e going for

Took a few pics of the assembling and my wc setup, will upload them later.

Switched from X2 6000+, Crosshair and Dominators to 2347, L1N64WS/B SLI and reg ram without needing to reinstall Vista. That suprised me a little, current Vista install has seen Crosshair/Phenom 9500/x2 3800+/x2 6000+/L1N64WS/B and Opteron 2347. LOL. Vista recognized the Opteron as Phenom 9500 for a while

Time for a clean install? (I dread it, it is sooo boring)

BTW DDR2 800Mhz posts, but fails to load Vista, will have to look closer at that. 1066 mode resulted in bios reset

Just bought myself a new MSI K9ND-Speedster. Hope to be able to add to this thread soon

Am also planning to write a Linux overclocking tool for the MCP55 chipset (probably just a shell script that writes to the appropriate PCI registers), if anyone can help me with testing I'd be very happy

Nice! The original Speedster or the Speedster II? Pics is obligatory

Ain't using Linux myself, how about doing like Sam2008 and write a oc program based on Crystalcpuid for Windows too?

    Pics from yesterdays building:

Crosshair and L1N64WS/B SLI side by side, stripped of nb/sb heatsinks.

Could not use wb and heatsink on SB's as I had planned, then they would have blocked the GFX(s). So I reinstalled stock heatsink and put the wb on top in the middle, it actually works great Wb for cpu is without hold down plate, using the "gettho-modded-AMD-stock-cooler-hold-down-bar" instead. Last pic of 7900GTO and Xtreme gamer card.

Finally finished for now, looks very empty in that socket to the left, that's to be remedied soon. I'm gonna use my Zalman 9700LED on cpu2 for now (wich is clearing customs atm). Lots of space for it. This is a medium sized Lian Li case, wich the mobo just fits in

It's the original Speedster-WA6. I couldn't find a Speedster2 in stock anywhere, and even if I had, I wouldn't have been able to afford it

I'll try to upload some pics when I get it; ETA next Friday.

    EDIT:

Only joking. I'll look into CrystalCPUID; if it makes things as easy on Windows as pcitweak setpci do on Linux, it might be worth me dual-booting for a little longer

    Lol karbonkid

I do have a iso with ubuntu lying around, have not yet installed it for unknown reasons...

Are you going for dual quad cores? I see other places that the version of the board with 8mb bios chip is qaud core compatible. Bios chip WINBOND W39V080APZ is the one.

I'm gonna go with dual cores for now, but I'm probably going to get the W39V080APZ chip from bios-repair.com and update to the 2.x BIOS, just so i can a) have a spare and b) make sure my overclocking tool works with the latest BIOSs.

Me too, probably won't be affordable until christmas though. That's why i went for 2347 BA's that is pretty cheap at ebay.

    Edit:

BTW, look at this: Everest lists DDR3 800MHz as compatible with the IMC. Could some Phenom owners check if this is listed on Phenom? (Cpuz reads a "little" too much ram, too. I have only 4 gigs )

Not sure, think it is the cpu that stops me. At 2.2GHz it is really unstable (HTT 230). As it is BA revision I think 300MHz oc is around the limit. There is no oc support from bios, so I can't even use your trick to test max HTT. Board overvolts 0.3v, but I can not change voltage through bios, it does not seem like bios overvolt option works either. Flashed to bios 0501 through asus flash programme in windows btw, scary stuff . Afudos and older amibios flash progs for dos did not work with the board. Think I burnt 8 cd's testing different approaches before surrendering to winflash

I'm overclocking it by a mix of nTune and AOD (hack version 209 + 214 x64.sys). Systool does not work with x64 as you probably know.

I'll be testing some more before I lay my verdict about ocing the board/cpu. It might be worth testing the "3rd weaker core approach" for higher clocks too as it is an early sample.

BTW got a 21" CRT monitor today, I have to test some high resolutions too, BF2142 at 2560×2048 here I come

I wonder one thing. Why did you get 2347 BA processor ? Opty 2350 which is B3 and 2.0 ghz is commonly available for around 250 USD.

I have 2346 because that was the only available ones back then, but I see no reason to get 2347 now.

AOD (hack version 209 + 214 x64.sys) how did you make that work?

Got them at ebay for under 100USD each Waiting for Shanghai. It's all about the money. Getting 2 2347s for under 200USD wich overclocks 200/300MHz, or 2 2350s for 500USD wich overclocks 300/400MHz, when I'm trading them with Shanghai at soon as possible? I'll go for the cheapest option thanks.

For planning purposes, ASUS or MSI? I've heard the K9ND-Speedster can use regular DDR2, and I know that the ASUS can, but I'd rather the ability to go to 16GB if I can. 8 GB means I have a decent investment ATM...

Considering selling this board/chip and going DP. I have access to a pair of 8800 GTS and I can farm these 3850s into house machines, so very little expenditure...

I would go for MSI K9ND SPEEDSTER-WA6 because it has one nvidia chip.
I didn't like L1N64 for that dual chips, hated the additional heat source.

If you want to use regular ram you will not be able to use the quad core Opterons with either of the boards. It is only second gen Opterons that can be run with regular DDR2 (like msimax does).

You should go for the MSI Speedster II or the ASUS KFSN4-DRE with ddpm support. The latter does not have SLI support though.

The "old" socket F board Asus KFN32-D SLI also got quad core support, but not ddpm. (and probably a crippled bios like L1N64WS/B)

There might be some Supermicro or Tyan boards that you should check out too.

Yes the board needs proper cooling. Wonder how the Speedster bios is managing quad cores. Probably better than what Asus has managed.
