There is reason for this. It took me poking around with a DMM and Rattle flashing his card like nuts.
We both have Visiontek cards. Mine clocks to 700/1100 just fine, however his barely touches 650/1050. I've been considering pencil modding mine tonight just for fun as well as poking around with my DMM...found something strange. I noticed other people posting voltages such as Idle: 1.10vGPU & Load: 1.15vGPU...I was getting 1.05vGPU // 1.10vGPU respectively. Now surely 0.05v isn't that much, but it's enough to get those few more mhz stable. Rattle had flashed to the MSI BIOS and can magically get his card to run 700mhz, 685mhz stable VS. the Visiontek (BBA) BIOS which couldn't do that. I decided to flash mine to MSI as well and well guess what? The voltage is different. Idle: 1.07vGPU & Load 1.14vGPU on the MSI BIOS. So there you have it if your Visiontek card clocks lower than other branded cards...check your vGPU's.
@ Gurusan.
Aren't you worried that putting 1.5v on the core will give too much stress on the card's VRM's?
I mean, look at the power circuitry on the HD4870, that's much more elaborate, or is that mainly for the GDDR5 chips?
Can't imagine that, because GDDR5 operates at lower voltages that GDDR3, right?

I've suggest this before, look up the vrm part number, buy double and add them in parallel; it will drop the load in half for each vrm.
hmmm now there's a interessting ideaHas this already been performed by someone? And would the components in green be the ones that need to be doubled:

the easier way is probably to buy a bigass lab psu and hook up its output directly to vddc

Gurusan / Jamesbong, others with vmodded 4850s - whats the highest core you can get to while passing ATITool Artifact test?
925 core passes Vantage and 06' fine, but gives me 1 pixel wrong on ATITool. This was at 1.55v, havn't tried any higher. ATITool seems to be happy with 875/1000 with 1.46v though.

Havn't read through this whole thread, seems mostly about 4850's though so far. Any word of how much, if any, better the 4870's are clocking in comparison?

4870 @ 790/1100

does anybody know, what does the 3 different temperatures mean?
GPU1, GPU2, GPU3?
watercooling on the GPU, small zalman ram heatsinks on the rams, and on the vrm. + 80mm fan

highest core i can go for atitool completely 100 percent arti free.. 910mhz... i start to get arties anything after that... but only in 05 canyon flight and 01 nature.
@demoneyes
the 3850 is almost identical to these. pwm wise... i pounded over 1.6v into my 3850 for over a half year. still alive still doing same clocks as the day i modded her.
highest core i got to was 920mhz on 1.48v 100% artifact free. So was 910 on 1.45v. Currently back to jsut a basically stock bios flash though (1.2v 750/1100).

so what is the lowest possible setting for 2d and 3d vcore measured that you can set in the bios, measurable on the dmm?

Looks like we are all hitting the same wall just about. A hair less than 925MHz artifact free. 1GHz was hit, but that was on DICE by Hazzan, but obviously not for 24/7 usage.
Think we are hitting the limitation of the chip, or maybe the power circuitry? I guess we'll find out when 4870 vmods come out and users start modding their cards. If they can break this 900-925MHz wall while being completely artifact free, its either better binned chips, or power circuitry advantage
