My NB temp si quite high too, about 57C with 1,55 V on air but i cant do nothing right now, i have a 80 mm fan on NB but temps are quite high in Europe right now. I have the solution for NB with Thermalright HR-05 SLI but i dont know what to put on SB.

原本用400N.B起始頻率超頻,北橋電壓AUTO時華碩自動使用1.6V跑全速測試北橋溫度會達到8X度 ....
而且RAM的數據會很奇怪讀取剩7千多分...
今天把N.B改成333起始超450外頻就都沒問題了,北橋還可以降電壓(應該可以更低我目前是用1.4V ).
還在改善機殼內因為9800GX2的廢熱問題.

I will be getting dual 4870X2 video cards in CFX, but the only problem is that the ICH9R southbridge is behind one of the PCI-E x16 slots, and with two video cards in CFX, the Thermalright HR-05 IFX that I currently have on it will not fit, nor will the HR-05 IFX SLI version.

So I want to get a low profile heatsink to use instead. I am looking at the Enzotech CNB-S1L:

Does anybody know if it will fit on the ICH9R, and if it does, will it allow for a second video card, or is it still too tall?

I use 2 3870X2s on Maximus Formula currently, you got plenty of room for that heatsink...or get the one with the little fan on it for a lil more cooling.

I noticed quite a few people here with 8800GTX (or other PCI-E 1.1 cards). I'm having a very weird problem.
So far it seems like playing a HD 720p or 1080p x274 video in VLC Media Player is a better and quicker stability test then Prime95 on 4 cores...
At 8x480Mhz FSB i can run prime95 for a long time, but when i start a HD video i pretty much always have a BSOD within a couple of seconds or sometimes a couple of minutes. I have to increase the Vnb a lot to get rid of this problem at 475Mhz FSB (1.75v) while prime95 is stable at much lower voltages.
I was wondering if anybody else noticed this and if so if they have fix for it. Or if not, what MB BIOS and VGA driver are you using. So far i have tested under Vista x86 SP1 and XP x64 SP2 and there is no difference. I have also tested at stock speeds for my 8800GTX and with different 8800GTX BIOS version and even a modded 8800Ultra BIOS.

Hi Abducted, interesting find.
VLC is crap, especially under x64. I dont use it. Try zoomplayer or WMP with ffdshow codecs (32 bit).
Can you try that and report if you still have a bsod? Then i can try to replicate.

About bios and drivers: 0403, forceware 175.16 whql (i use almost only whql drivers)

I didn't think the player had anything to do with it since it was stable at lower overclocks. But just to be sure i installed zoomplayer (nice player BTW ) and i had the same problem. BSOD after about 30sec of video play.
I'm using the same BIOS and driver as you are.
Another thing worth mentioning is i can also run 3D apps for a long time without problems, like the Crysis CPU or GPU benchmark (looping 99 times)
Also it's not only x264 as far as i can remember, but when playing the 1080i MPEG-2 source i used to make those x264 videos i had the same problem. But i'll give that another try just to be sure.


EDIT: Yup, i just ran Prime95 on 4 cores for over 20min (6min per test so it was working on it's 4th test), i open the MPEG-2 1080i source with VLC and it crashes right away. (like within a second) I'll give zoomplayer a try too.
EDIT2: Same for Zoomplayer, however it took about 30sec before it crashed.

EDIT3: I just played the MPEG-2 version in VLC and the x264 version in Zoomplayer at the same time for a couple of minutes without a problem, but when i also ran Prime95 at the same time another BSOD within a couple of minutes. Not as fast as when i do it the other way around. So it's like Prime95 brings 'something' to the edge of stability and when i add video playback to it that pushes it over the edge. Now why would you run Prime95 and video at the same time, well the whole reason i got this quad-core is for video encoding and i use VirtualDub for that and VirtualDub uses video overlay for it's video preview and uhm... 'postview'? That's when i first noticed the instability, while after days of tweaking with only Prime95 and 3D benchmarks i figured i had my system stable.

EDIT4: Prime95 4 cores and Crysis GPU benchmark at the same time also not a problem. It's really releated to video playback. I dont think it's my 8800GTX because if that was the case i would expect it to have problems with or without Prime95.

Abducted, the PSU your using is it a noisetaker1 or 2.

I have had both and in 3 cases the PSU wasnt really able to handle a E6600@3ghz with 5x hdds and a 8800GTX back 3-4 months ago now. 1st time it was BSOD'ing randomly and then it would just die.

Would suggest you try another PSU? could be something to do with your stability issues? Just a suggestion of course!

Could be worth running memtest also?

How can i tell the difference between v1 and v2? The fact that i dont know make me assume i have v1 I've had this PSU for a while now. But if it is the PSU, then wouldn't u expect Prime95 and Crysis benchmark at the same time to be more stressful on the PSU compared to Prime95 and video playback?
I have ran memtest86+ and there are no problems there, not even at 1.8vDDR (memory at 950Mhz) but i have it running at 2.0v just in case.

I use ffdshow codecs. I just played a hd trailer with zoomplayer and it played fine. My system is rock solid.

As other suggested i would look into the psu.

Sweet thanks for the confirmation! I'd rather have surface area over a tiny noisy fan though If temps are too hot, I will jerry rig an angled 80mm fan or something.

Prime95 and Crysis GPU benchmark at the same time = NO problems
Prime95 and video playback at the same time = BSOD

I'm pretty sure my 8800GTX uses a lot more watt when running a crysis benchmark then when playing a HD video.

Also at what settings did you test it? Because i'm perfectly stable at for instance 8x450Mhz too. But when i get to +/- 475Mhz FSB i notice the weird difference between Prime95 stability (just Prime95) and the instability with Prime95 (or 4 cores load) + video playback

Well i dont use such high fsb, because of the memory. So I'm using 425 right now. I'm not pushing much more atm because ambient is 31-32.

i have had 3 in my hands ... all have had the Mask logo . Now i have two / the 3rd was the 1st board that was RMA'd due to a shorted PCIX slot
i don't think there has been an offical new version but there are newer boards that seem different the last 2 i got were in a newer pkg'ed box . one i have has a different/higher series of serial #'s & came with a newer bios & that one i got at NewEgg

Good catch. I think the newer boards such as mine have this logo (which is cuter i think)

Well, asus gave that little fan to put on the mosfets to cool the NB also. One guy in this forum is using it.
The NB runs very warm, but not hot on this board (unless u have a bad mounted dissy -that also happened). My suggestion is: reseat the nb cooler (see other posts and the maximus formula thread), put good TIM and try with the little asus fan.

Re-install your drivers. There's no way it's your PSU. Last time I checked, Crysis + Prime95 > VLC player. VLC player works fine for me under Vista Ultimate 64-bit as well as Vista Home Premium 64-bit. If anything, it's the NVIDIA drivers!

get back plates for all I use a collared back plate for the CPU that keeps from bending the mobo
