It's the same RV770 GPU in both 4850 and 4870...The only difference is the clock of GPU and memory in those 2 models.
So to recap once again:
RV700 800SP(160x5),40TMUs,16ROPs
Radeon 4850:RV770 clocked @625Mhz,993Mhz for DDR3 memory
Radeon 4870:RV770 clocked @750Mhz,993Mhz for GDDR5 memory(acting effectively as 3.6Ghz DDR3).

Yes, but the exact same data is copied on each 256-bit bus, therefore it is not seperate and able to be "added together" and considered a "one wide bus".

Who games for efficiency? It's something old people gawk over, like gas mileage :P Let's be honest here.. who is concerned about saving power when they play games? You'd do more by turning the lights out every time you're not in a room. Idle consumption is obviously more important because your computer is probably idling 90%+ of the time, not gaming.

Apparently you don't remember the 8800GTX or Ultra launch prices

The end result is a better gaming experience. Not everything has to directly translate/correlate to better frames within a game to have a tangible effect on the gaming experience.

And, as mentioned... the more efficient the design, the better the architecture is, the greater it can be expanded or OC'ed.

Does anyone have a sales breakdown based on price points? I would like to know which price points are actually the highest and lowest volumes. I can speculate but would like to see real numbers.

Yeh but I'm talking about the HD4870. Some websites say they're both mid-range and only the HD4870X2 is considered high-end, just a bit confusing.

Yeah, add to that all those reviews testing 2560x1600 with the "mid-range" cards . 4850 is the mid-range card, 4870 is the perfomance-enthusiast card and R700 is the enthusiast card. They're all priced acording to this and perfomance of course.

I just love this, dirt cheap cards capable of playing games at high resolutions. I'll wait another generation to make the jump to a 1920x1200 monitor, great perfomance without the CF/SLI requirement.

We've come a LONG way. Remember this time last year? Our mid ranged cards were the 2600XT and 8600GTS (i'm still laughing at those two) and the X1950Pro.

Now we've got the 4850 competing at 2560 x 1600 with cards formerly priced $600 (like the 8800Ultra) for $200. I love this
