This afternoon the Hstntx1 data center in Houston went down due to a transformer fire. This meant that murderbox.com and all the images I hosted here were offline until I could make temporary arrangements. Once they get back online, I’ll switch my dns nameserver back – probably within a day or two.

I’m really enjoying this build log thing – I only wish I’d done it for the 1st murderbox. I will definitely do a build log for my next creation; a one off design simply called “pure|murderbox”. Anyway, more about that another time; back to the task at hand - Fried Chicken’s murderMod TJ07.

Today I strung up the upper loop and took some pics. I’m loaning Fried Chicken two of my coveted and prized 90 degree copper elbows made my Martin. I only have a few left and I’d rather part with my wife than Martin’s handcrafted fittings. What can I say, the things are pure perfection. Moving on - I’m not 100% happy with the loop – perhaps it’ll grow on me. I’ll leave it for a few days and see how I feel then. Meanwhile, there are the drives to mount, SATA cables to run and lighting to sort out. I haven’t decided on the lighting setup yet but now that I’m thinking of going all black – coolant and all, I’m leaning towards key lighting which is like back lighting. This will highlight the edges of all the black stuff and provide contrast since I won’t be relying on color to do so. I have an idea for the lighting and I’ll definitely document the process.

The murderMod faceplate is being anodized and should be ready for pickup by Tuesday. Then I'll wire up the logo lighting and install the brackets and optical drive. I should have pics of it by Wednesday, if all goes well. By then Fried Chicken’s murderMod TJ07 should be finished – save for burning in the CPU and finalizing the details. Oh I almost forgot; the side panel is still at the water jet shop but should also be ready by Wednesday. I’ll show you guys what I use to adhere the window then – it’s some sweet stuff and works like a charm. I’m also waiting on FC’s IO shield which will have to be painted black.

What’s that? You’d like more rambling? Well you can’t have it – instead I’m going to post some pics.

I’ll start with a couple of the backside – I’d like to point out that the white molex connector will be replaced with a black one. The reason for the molex is to allow use of the pump without having to turn on the system’s PSU. I can connect my handy micro ATX PSU to the pump directly in order to get the loop filled and the air bled out. Cycling the pump on and off helps get all the air pockets out and I’d rather not have to turn on the system to do so.

An arty farty shot of the upper loop. Disregard the black cable tie on the top GPU block, its temporary. I’ll be using herbie clips when I’ve settled on the loop design but since they’re so hard to get off, I’ll use cable ties for now. You’ll note I’m using 2 of Martin’s elbows to redirect the loop back down and ultimately to the reservoir.







A similar shot but a bit less arty and not so farty; or to put it in laymen’s terms – more depth of field.







This angle gives you a better view of where the loop comes out of the midplate and into the CPU block.







And finally, a touch more of the arty farty. You’ll notice that there’s no plug cap under the lower GPU block – I ran out of them and had to order more – I hope I remember to put one in before I fill the loop.



You’ll also notice there are no full body shots – I’m waiting till the whole system is finished before taking any. Kind of a “big reveal” if you will.

Hey Charles, how long are the pci-express cables of the power supply?
I think mine are way to short, if you extended them, could you say how?

To those asking about what I used to secure the cabling to the back of the motherboard tray; I use cable clamps by Gardner Bender. Home Depot sells them but you can also find them online in bulk and a lot cheaper.



I screw them into the tray's existing unused holes using 6-32 black oxide indented hex head screws.


Steffen: For this build I'm using a PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750. The PCI-E cables are prefect length to go around the back of the mobo tray and up and over to easily reach the top video card. I do remove all the sleeving and replace it with my own. The Silencer 750 is an awesome PSU and I highly recommend it.

For the watercooling loop would work to perfection Pi-Thon clamps. They do an excellent job and look cool. Another thing that I do't like apart from the lighting is the plastic elbows.

The elbows that are placed at the upper block really hurt performance and ruin the looks. I would have mounted the connecting tube on the rear holes of the EK waterblocks and remove the elbows from there and directing the hose directly to the res.

Tile, those are custom bent copper elbows with no flatspots or compression points. There is no measurable impact on performance. Looks are subjective of course...
