Hard economic times - bad for over sized chips.

I dont know why ATI doesnt invest more money on a better single chipset, instead of little updates to older tech...........i know they are going for price/performance but id really like to see them come hard with a great chip, something like 9700/9800 PRO days............that was a monster card, but since the 9800 PRO, ATi has not been the same.

with what money? they are struggling to survive with sensible architectures instead of grasping for the performance crown.

AMD has fallen hard with the rather complex R600 and I guess they've learned their lesson. now they go for less complex GPUs with smaller structures. imho, that's quite clever.
Notice any grammar or spelling mistakes? Feel free to correct me! Thanks

Fud has no clue about ATI hardware much like the Inq has no clue bout Nvidia hardware

    lol@ the 512-bit referenced 3 times

Whoever is feeding Fud his info sure has him good

??? man this sounds bad for RV770
Sounds like utter BS. Rv770 is definately faster than that with a good margin. Seems like fud is pro-nV. Also, where did he get that "229$ dollar" MSRP from? Probably out of thin air.

I bet he was thinking of the rv770pro, the xt will be at least 10-15% faster than the 9800gtx

Considering the RV770XT is MSRP'd at $349 from more than a few sources, I'd say Fud has no clue what he's talking about yet again

Will the 4800 series actually beat the GTX260/280? It's really hard to say right now. But I have to ask something? Are we still living in a day/age where we must OC our top end video cards to get acceptable frame rates in current games? I honestly believe we are in such a day/age were OC'ing high end video cards appear to be more of luxury not a necessity when playing games. Therefore, what are you really gaining as a customer if you don't have to OC to play your games? Yes, there will be 3DMark and Vantage it's fun to benchmark IMO. But if you are a gamer at heart (and some of you are) knowing that this gen of video cards will only increase the standard of performance. There is little incentive to upgrade from a performance POV.

if your taking that view on things why overclock at all?
its the bang for buck factor of buying a less powerful graphics card and pushing it to beat somthing costing allot more.

cards like the 9800 and 3870(x2)? will handle anything you throw at it today except maybe for crysis at crazy settings or games with 4X+ AA?

The situation isn't as black and white as to over clock or not. The situation is that today's high end video cards don't require the same OC attention as they once did. OC'ing now is a luxury not a necessity to play games with a typical size monitor at acceptable frame rates.

Well the bigger issue is that games in general haven't come out that have made it worth it as well as the fact that technology has outpaced games in general.

I remember when FEAR came out and only SLI rigs could really play it maxed out. Then a single G80 crushed it utterly.

Granted though, I run at 2560x1600 and so having a top of the line rig, including multi-GPU will potentially help. But at the same time, seeing how the next generations multi-GPU configs aren't so appetizing (the high TDP's of the GTX280's and the joke SLI boards out there, and potential performance crown issues with ATI + CF) means I'm in a bit of a rut and will certainly wait and see for which rig becomes the best.

    i assume 4xxx will beat 9800gtx.
so, wot do nvidia have to offer in same price range ?

oh yeah 9800gt /g92 revision...?; no crazy gtx280 for me, but waiting is prudent; have all cards on the table so to speak b4 choosing.

i'll go the super shrunk version of gtx280 in a year or 3, or whenever it happens

And the amount of corruption issues and so on the 790i's have had on this forum (granted, they get pushed hard) and instability isn't exactly appealing to me

i am getting tired of having to buy nv's boards for SLI... cant wait for 4870's bench

probably not going to happen though, that would mean the 4870x2 would be miles ahead of the gtx 280 which doesn't happen you're playing catchup

considering how nvidia is trying to leave dependence of a cpu for better graphics, i doubt the gtx2xx will scale as well as the ati cards with a faster processor.

Last time i heard all upcoming NV cards will be more CPU-Independent. Maybe they start screwing intel.
    only time will tell.

I always thought FUD was pro-ati.

Anyways, at least in terms of crysis, its actually possible that the 4870 matches 9800gtx performance. Since current rumor put it at 20 percent faster than the 9800gtx. However thats probaly an average, and crysis is one game it has alot of catching up to do.

    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...ew,1800-7.html

Crysis has always run better on NV hardware than ATI hardware. In some cases the lead of the 9800 gtx is 50 percent. So alot of people thinking the 4870 has to perform better than the 9800gtx shouldn't feel so secure about that. It has alot of catching up to do.

This gives us another lesson, don't base purchasing this card strictly off of crysis performance because it not necessarily a reflection of everything else.

I highly doubt this card has any catch up to do in just about any game.
