Thanks for that, I'm guessing you're right. Too bad. I have 2 of these and they have been very trouble free, but the vdrop+vdroop is killing me. 1.4625 in bios gives me 1.39-1.4 idle and drops to 1.34 at load. I have tried them with different psu's also, no difference. I understand the reason for vdroop, but it's just excessive on these boards.
Just an FYI, the Vmod does work that is spoken about on page 59. I tried it using a pencil and that did not work. I tried it with conductive ink and that does work. The difference between the voltage setting in the bios and what it actually is has decreased significantly (i.e. 1.50 in bios translates into 1.489 in CPUz). Vdroop is gone and in fact you get a voltage increase under load rather than droop (i.e. 1.489 under idle and 1.51 under load), therefore it is not necessary to put your voltage in the bios as high as before since vdroop is not causing instability.

One issue I did run into though, if the voltage hits 1.55 real time under load my motherboard reboots. I believe this is an issue with the conductive ink not being able to handle the voltage running across it. I think the vmod would work better with solder. I am going to try this sometime this week. If it does fix the issue of the reboot, I believe I can hit 4Ghz stable, since I am already able to hit it, just not stable under load.

I hope this helps. Also, any thoughts on the second part feel free to give me your suggestions.

    Thanks,

I've just bought 4 x 2gb of OCZ Platinum XTC PC2-8000 (£123 delivered. Cracking value for the UK) and my P35-DS3P rev 1.0 won't boot with all 4 sticks installed. It's fine with any 3 sticks installed at 1000mhz, but it won't boot when I insert a fourth, even at 800mhz.
I ran 4 sticks of 2gb for a total of 8gb on the P35-DS3R and overclocked it to 400mhz and 450mhz fsb.

    6400 ram
A-Data basic ram (red heatspreaders, 5-5-5-15) went to 960Mhz at 5-5-5-18
    OCZ SLI (OCZ2N800SR4GK, 5-4-4-15) went to 1000Mhz at 5-5-5-15
    Patriot 4gb kit (PDC24G6400ELK) went to 960Mhz at 5-5-5-18
Patriot 4gb kit (PDC24G6400LLK) went to 960Mhz at 5-5-5-15 (would go to 1000Mhz but wasn't stable)
Patriot 8500 (PDC24G8500ELK) could not get it to boot to advertised timings, finally got it to boot to 5-7-7-15 at 1066Mhz, I am still playing with this kit and I give an update once I figure it out.

I am running Vista Premium x64 and I have come to the conclusion that the difference in 4Gb vs. 8Gb is negible except maybe in benchmarks and then it is only around 3-5% gain. I will say it was pretty cool not using a page file in Windows, but I am not sure it really did anything. Since I wasn't running any x64 applications, only x32 my conclusion is that 4Gb is plenty with the current software and that running 2 sticks is better than running 4 sticks, especially for overclocking.

    I hope that helps everyone.

So, I have a P35 S3, and I really want to be able to try out the 8.5 multi. The DS3 owners have access to 0.5 multi's with the newest BIOS, but I don't

    Boo hoo

Any other way? Other than solid state capacitors, the DS3 and S3 are identical I am lead to believe.=

    anybody with P35-DQ6?

what is the highest FSB you got?

and the required MCH and FSB voltage ?

Vdroop mods probably cause damage to the power regulation circuitry, by the way. There's a big 'ol article on the engineering reason for so-called vdroop. Before I read about it, I did the mod to my P35 and 965P. The P35 was squealing under load. Voltage was nice, but that was not cool. I un-modded both boards pretty quick.

    http://www.thetechrepository.com/showthread.php?t=126

Basically "Vdroop" is a mechanism to reduce the demands on the power regulation when the processor goes in and out of idle. Lower voltage means lower power demands (power = current * voltage). It's a way to make it cheaper to design motherboards with CPUs that can pull from 40W to 150W. Bypassing it is not something that will have a happy ending down the road, I imagine. Especially when you are overvolting too.

Well, the problem is, the Gigabyte boards have a ridiculously HUGE vdrop + vdroop. It's more than most I've seen and since they limit the voltage you can set in bios to 1.6v, it actually destroys any chances of a serious overclock.

Some people get a dif of 0.05v, but other people get differences of nearly 0.1v. When I set 1.6v in the bios I get 1.57 while idle and 1.54 on full load. That's ridiculous.

If at least the volts set in the bios would be the real volts in windows, that already would help a lot as you'd only have the droop lowering your volts.

This will be my last post here guys, I upgraded to the Asus Blitz Formula SE since it has way more bios settings such as the Loadline calbration which eliminates the Vdroop issue. Anyway, the reason I am posting is that I thought some of the folks looking for some decent ram would appreciate this. I got the OCZ SLI 4GB kit (http://www.ocztechnology.com/product...n_dual_channel) and was able to overclock it stable (OCCT stable) to 1066. Here are my settings:

    Cas Latency timing - 5
    Ras to Cas - 6
    Ras precharge - 6
    Precharge delay - 21
Refresh cycle time - 60 (very important for stability)
    twr - 4
    twtr - 4
    trrd - 3
    trtp - 4
command time - auto or 2t
memory enhancement (cant think of the stupid name) - options are standard, turbo and extreme - select turbo
for the rest of the memory timings leave them to auto

My FSB is 444x8 for my Q6600 with a memory divider of 2.4. Set the voltage to 2.2 ( this is within spec and will not void your warranty according to OCZ website)

This for 4GB of ram (2x2GB) and you can get them for around $65 after MIR from CompUSA's website and from Newegg

i just bumped up my FSB to 400x8 with 1.22 real volts(cpu-z). running at 3200. i want to run my memory at 1:1 ratio. its decent memory set to run at 1066 (gskill f-2-8500cl5) so i think the memory is better off with good timings at 800spd.

whats the best timings someone with similar memory has gotten.?? right now im using the mem at 4-4-4-10 @1.8v. i dont mind going up to 1.9 or 2.0v.

Yeah I know what you mean. My Q6600 is undervolted by ~0.15v at stock settings. I can still get a 600 MHz overclock without touching the volts though, lol. This Vdroop factor is just something to look for before buying boards in the future if you plan to overclock.

I forgot to mention too that vdroop mods will cause overvoltages to your CPU when you come out of high CPU usage. That's another reason for vDroop. It's one of those laws of physics that a large near-instantaneous drop in current will cause the voltage to spike briefly. You aren't going to see this on the mobo sensors because it'll be too brief. I don't know how high the spike would go, but the higher the voltage you set, the more load there will be and the spike will be higher.

I think that article I posted earlier also debunks the "more phases are better" belief in power delivery, too. More phases are cheaper and easier to design than a smaller number of robust phases, more like it. It's the same with PSU rails, too.

I got myself a Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3R (rev.2.1) to replace my old GA-965P-DS3. I started with my Scythe Infinity cooler that has been modded similar to eva2000's. You can see photos of the mod at the bottom of this page. I don't know if it was shorting or what but it would restart when booting. When I used a AC Freezer 7 Pro it starts up properly. I'm betting that I'll need a better cooler. Any suggestions?

What are the default voltages for all these OverVoltages?

In the latest BIOS F7 for the DQ6 there is an added option called Loadline Calibration. That makes the vdrop and vdroop somewha less noticable.
The setting is located just above the vcore setting in the BIOS and when set to either AUTO or ENABLE you can no longer use the "sleep mode" in Windows.
You can set Windows into "sleep mode" but when you try to wake up you get the "endless boot" error and have to switch off the PSU and then restart.

Short solution is to set Loadline Calibration to disable but then you can't benefit from the function at all.

Does the Performance Enhance option work?

If not then try Memset. It works with the P35 Gigabytes, tho i don't know about the P31 version.

Just a question. Instead of going through 50+ pages, anybody know how to set the memory ration to 1:1? It's confusing.
    My board is a: GA-P35-DS3R Rev1.0.
