What if I wanted to compile my own 2.6.24.4 kernel?

Here is my perfect Linux distrobution.

I did exactly that, except I grabbed the sudo package aswell.

I do not like how if I want to switch from my XOrg session to a TTY, it freezes and I have to restart my entire system. Do you know if that is because I did not install the nVIDIA drivers?

If I could get Xfce4 to work, without looking disgusting, it would be the perfect operating system.

compile the magic sys request keys into your kernel and you wont risk losing anything

It took me like, an hour to configure everything.
I still had problems though, like AHCI, IDE, ICH9R, all that.

I did all of the tests on fresh installs with my backup disk far away out of the system.

    Off-topic:
NewEgg does not sell the high end Gigabyte GA-P35-DQ6 anymore?
I was going to search their specifications to find out what controller I used (turned out to be ICH9R), but it isn't on the site anymore.

The "high-end" discontinued board that won't let me do 4.0GHz with a Q6700.

The only thing i do notice is that vista boots faster than server08

This is going to sound stupid, but can you use Vista 32 bit drivers with Server 08 even though its a 64bit OS? My laptop manufacture doesn't make 64bit vista drivers. I doubt you can, but I figured I would ask.

    Thanks!

Windows Server 08 is not only a 64 bit version, it has a 32 bit version too. You can use Vista 32 drivers for Windows Server 08 32 bit or you can use Vista 64 drivers for Windows Server 08 64 bit. It is up to you to choose the best OS for your daily usage..

On "stock" 2008 it installs and then it wants... "Vista"
Anyone? As the 3DM V is approaching soon, it will be nice to know if we [2008 users] will be forced to use Vista only for that one bench or not...

the 64bit is faster, the only reason to go 32bit is if your processor doesn't support 64bit...

Then why can't vista 32bit SP1 support 8gb of ram?
My Rig can do EpicFLOPs, Can yours?
Once this baby hits 88 TeraFLOPs, You're going to see some serious $@#%....

Server class windows OS has supported PAE for ALONG time while non server OS never has. Hence when 32bit windows server 2008 handles 8gbytes of ram and vista 32bit dosen't.

Exactly. And as you can see in bakalu's post, the result differences are smaller than 1%. Hardly worth it.

Anyone thinking that 2k8 is going to be faster in 3D is kinda silly.

The major difference in terms of speed between a server OS and a non-server OS is going to be I/O operations. More specifically I find that 2k8 can handle a much bigger load across memory, cpu, harddrives and still remain responsive (and processing your data). With this comes some more stability, but I only have very anecdotal evidence.

After doing some testing myself, running around with the best Linux distributions you can find, and even running Mac OS X on my PC, Windows XP is the obvious choice.

I feel like I should make a blog about.

Kind of off-topic, but how do Media Center and Windows XP relate, performance wise?
