Not sure where I read it, but someone who had high temps on their NB and SB pulled off the NB,SB, and mosfets, cleaned everything up(removed old thermal paste), sanded and polished everything to a mirror image, and re-pasted with arctic silver. If I remember correctly, his temps came down by ~30c by doing this.

While this shouldn't have to be done by us, the user, it is something to try.

Although my temps are reasonable, I am going to do this next time I do any renovations on my rig.

    Hi,

I did remove the whole block clean it and applied AS5 (i didn't sand it down) and i got those temps

So you can guess what it was like before... I used to hit 90°c on SB and comp was shutting off, i didn't RMA t because i didn't want to wait weeks without computer...

But i got my SIIE today, waiting on the DDR3 to arrive and am gonna RMA it

Thx for the reply, hmm kind of worried of pushing that amount of volt earlier on. Was it really necessary to push that much of voltage early on? I though the E8400 can pull a 3.6 GHz without any need for added voltage?

You should be able to post, with the following (checklist).

Ensure the cpu is set properly, and no pins are bent.
Ensure adequate thermal paste is used, and the cpu heatsink is properly set.
Connect additional power to the CPU.
    Install RAM.
1 stick: blue slot closest to CPU
    2 sticks: two blue slots
3 sticks: two blue slots and white slot closest to CPU
    4 slots...

A PSU is connected to the motherboard.
A video card is installed in the top PCI-E slot. Connect power to the card if required.
    A Keyboard is connected.
    A monitor is connected.

    Power the PSU on.
    Power the monitor on.
    Press the power button.

If no joy, what does the poster say?

Well this is the highest I have been able to clock and run a complete 3dmark06 test.

I have been working the past few days on 4.6 with no luck, well close but no cookie.

I need to update the bios, and watercool the chipset ASAP this weekend.

I wish ntune or clockgen worked on this board.

    I read that before yes.

I have contacted french Asus tech support and they tell me that if i remove the heat-pipe system, my warranty will be void... (even if i already remove it...)

Thats interesting, cause I have contacted ASUS international support and they said it is absolutely fine to do that, well I will quote you my converstaion with them:

    Me:
I am having trouble with my North Bridge temperatures going above 90C and PC shutting down, I have screwed on the fan on top of the NB and it is a bit better but temps are still high. I would like to take off the heatpipes and reapply the thermal compound. Can I do so without voiding the warranty?

    Sky Liu (ASUS Tech):
My name is Sky and it is my pleasure to help you with your problem today. Please reinforce chassis cool system for a test. If the problem still remains, please change LDT frequency to 4X, test again. Please refer to the manual 4-24. Is it helpful? If not, please contact your retailer to check if it is due to motherboard faulty. If yes, he will send it to us for RMA service. We will solve your problem as soon as possible. If you still have any problem or the problem still exists, please feel free to contact me. Thank you for the support!
Best regards and have a nice day!

Me (cause he didn't answer my question about heat-pipes):
Hello Sky, all I was wondering if I could remove the heat-pipes and re-apply the thermal compound without voiding the warranty. Cheers

    Sky Liu (ASUS Tech):
If you action cause motherboard physical damage, then the motherboard will lose warranty. PS: if the motherboard was damaged by other reason, please regress the original cooler and send to us for RMA.

    Yours sincerely,
    Sky_liu

Me (just to be on the safe side ):
Hello Sky, thanks for your reply, now it's clear. As long as I do not damage the motherboard itself I can do whatever I want with the heat-pipes, right?

    Sky Liu (ASUS Tech):
Yes. If "damage" isn't caused by change heat-pipes, motherboard will belong to warranty.
    Yours sincerely,
    Sky_liu

End of story, if I have to RMA my board and they have issues with me taking off heat-pipes I have documented converstion confirming otherwise...

    Hiya all!

Anyone running a Q6600 >4.0 on this board (don't want to hear from you phase-extremists pls lol!) ? Reason I'm asking is that I've currently got it at 4050 on my Max_Ex. Thought is to get a qx9650 for that board and move the Q6600 over to the strikerII. Alternative is to get a 45nm duo (E8400) and clock it to *#&%§ [insert your expression of choice here]...

    Any ideas?

500fsbx9 E8400 all settings auto but vcore and ram. What you see is what the mb sets in pc probe, I could prolly drop some of them. The everest shot is to show its not just a suicide run.

    http://good-times.webshots.com/photo...67863468gMwsLC
    http://good-times.webshots.com/photo...67863468KSUQCj

Just a quick note on removing the heatpipe cooling. I removed it all the other day cleaned it and put some AS3 on everything. One of the two fet coolers still had the plastic cover and the pipes to the sb needed some straightening.

The bios and everest do not show the temps any lower but I am stable with much lower motherboard voltages. Before I could not even post at 475 without 1.75Vnb and 3dmark06 would lock with less than 1.55HT. Now they run auto with Vnb at 1.47 and the HT at 1.23V. I also need less ram voltage?

The 500fsbx9 would prolly need 1.6Vcore and I am not ready to put that through this cpu yet just to see if its stable.

I had a Q6600 in on water. It did 4050mhz easy and I was trying for 4.1G but never got stable. I am running an E8400 in it now. At 4.27G its only 200 points behind the Q6600@4G in 3dmark06 overall. The E8400 gives a 10-12fps jump in the opening to proxycon over the Q6600, both at 4G.

Thanks fordf250, finally made 4.5 Ghz, though so far unstable.

3DMark06 BSODs. I do know that the CPU temp is now 49 to 51 idle, and hits 61 as soon as any load is applied. Max through RealTemp was 75, so this might not be possible without water cooling.

My RAM voltage I have kept the same, 2.18 Bios, 2.2 actual.

I may try running the voltages as per my chart later.

    Hey guys,

Got a weird problem, my system boots normally. But when I reboot (Vista x64) my monitor doesn't get a signal. So no screen from the bios on till Windows. But my system is starting up, I manage to shut down the pc with my keyboard.

Just don't know what the problem could be. My whole system is new, incl. the monitor. Power should be fine, videocard could be to new for motherboard. So perhaps I need to wait for a bios update. Bios btw is set standard, haven't tweaked it yet.

    Hope someone can help me.

    Thanks

Hey fordf250 I am getting a SII Formula on Monday and I run a Q6600 and I was wondering if you could post your bios settings and voltages.. I see that you seem to be the only one having any luck with a Quad core or Q6600 in particular... I have looked at your pictures but I still am a little vague on the exact settings that got you to where you could hit those FSB frequencies... Oh yeah and the bios I am confused on which bios you used to get the good OC on the Quad.. Really I just want to hit 3.6 - 3.8ghz on the processor but after reading all the posts I am a little worried that will not be possible...

    Memory ~ OCZ 4GB PC9200 DDR2 1150MHz Reaper HPC 2.1v 5-5-5-15

If those settings apply, did you get them on auto bios settings, or did you tweak the RAM settings?

    Things to try/check:

    1) Turn down the RAM frequency to 1066. Easy way to check best settings for RAM are with CPU-ID on the SPD tab.

    2) try removing RAM and rebooting with different sticks. It could be a bad stick...

    3) Could be a weak/defective PSU. Can you test output volts?

    Hey guys,

I was hoping that one of you guys would be able to offer a bit of advice

Well basically I got myself a Q9550 last week and I have been doing a bit of OCing on my Striker II Formula 780i.

The problem is, i have hit a wall at 3.5GHz and was looking for a bit of advice on how i might be able to get a better clock.

I can keep all the voltages on auto with a FSB of 412 and a multi of 8.5 to get 3.5GHz no worries, but once i up the FSB a bit more i get a No-Post....

I have tried upping the voltages, with the max i have tried here:

    CPU Voltage: 1.5V
    CPU PLL Voltage: 1.6V
    CPU VTT Voltage: 1.5V
    NB Core Voltage: 1.6V
    SB Core Voltage: 1.6V
    1.2V HT Voltage: 1.5V

And im also using the 1101 BIOS with settings:

    Loadline Calibration: Disabled
    NVIDIA GPU Ex: Disabled
    CPU Internal Thermal Control: Disabled
    Limit CPUID MaxVal: Disabled
    Enhanced C1 (C1E): Disabled
    Execute Disable Bit: Disabled
    Virtualization Technology: Disabled
    Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Tech: Disabled

I am sure that the MotherBoard FSB isn't stopping me because after dropping the multi to 7x i am able to take the FSB all the way up to 475 with no problems at all.

Also the temps are fine. CPU around 40-50 and MPC around 60

So i was hoping someone, who has used a 780i or otherwise, might be able to offer a bit of advice so that i can get a better clock out of this chip

I am just a bit unsure which voltages will allow this? More on the NB? Or if the 780i is crapping out with the quad?

    Cheers

Thanks, that's promising. Might do that instead of getting the E8400, since the Q6600 is likely to beat it anyway despite a lower clock (in 3DMark06 at least). I'm using my computer mainly for high-end flight simming, and a quad seems to have a significant performance edge over duos in this situation.

Now that the new 45nm quads are out I guess that will be an alternative to the QX9650 for my Max_Ex, but probably I will hold off for a bit to see what sort of performance people are getting (just saw MadDog's post re: the Q9550).

EDIT: Lol, from my favoured e-dealer (Q9550): ETA: 29.04.2008

    madDog,

Ford250 will have a more definitive answer, but my thoughts...

if you want an actual Vcore voltage of 1.5, you will have to set bios at ~3.0-3.5 higher than actual. Your voltage looks low. I'd suggest increasing it. The rest:

    CPU PLL Voltage: Auto
    CPU VTT Voltage: Auto
    NB Core Voltage: Auto
    SB Core Voltage: Auto
    1.2V HT Voltage: Auto

What flight sim? Running at 3.6 here, on Falcon 4:Allied Force with everything maxed out (including in NVidia control panel, is not problem. Best visuals I have seen in Falcon since it came out.
