Oh and quick question. All you guys that do modify with vlite, and more than chop the size in half, what is it exactly that you are removing? Like how do you know what is OK to remove, and won't cause problems with other aplications that depend on what was removed, etc...?
vLite gives a description for every item there is to remove.

I posted a screen shot of what I did and did not remove.
I integrated my own Ethernet adapter, audio, and video card drivers, so nothing else was necessary.

How exactly would I configure Server 2008 as a workstation? As you can see, I only had the bare minimum processes and services running, and no fancy interface.

I should really take a picture of the services.msc screen on both. Let me do that now.

But, as for me erasing my DVD-RW with my custom vLite and running tests with a more bloated, stock system, sorry.

But please do let me know how to make it more workstation-ish.

I re-did all of the Server 2008 tests.
I am keeping this much more organized.
I am going to re-do all of the Windows XP tests.

I tried to be descriptive as possible.
    BIOS Shots included
    Hardware
    Settings
    everything

    Any requests, just ask.
Added HD Tune, wPrime, 3DMark06 increased.

Good work. Could you also benchmark Server 2008 with aero enabled? I don't see how it could raise the score, though.

Core is without a lot more than Hyper-V.
All my tests were run without Hyper-V.

Hyper-V can be added via the Role manager.

    Code:
Attempt to see how small I could make Windows Server 2008 Standard Core 64-bit using vLite

I tried to see how small I could get Windows Server 2008 Standard Core 64-bit.

I highlighted what all my integrated drivers are.

If you got Paint.NET, Notepad++, Picasa, iTunes, Pidgin, Apache + MySQL + PHP, you would be set.

I need to run tests on that setup.

I wonder if I can put a DVD shrunken to CD sizes on a CD.

    EDIT:
    Code:
Windows Server 2008 Standard Core vLited to ~450mb ISO burned to a CD-ROM

Yeah, I just updated my post. It works.

    nnStep?

The latest XS OS, that sounds good.

When I integrated all my drivers, I shrunk the INFs for only my specific device and vendor ID.

Guys, if this was done using the Server Core version, then it won't have a GUI. The Core version is only command prompt and has a lot of things a workstation depends on removed.

With that 480mb install, does he have a UI?

Does Windows Server Core really not include a UI?

My ~400mb install gave me an error before any setup.

Pyro if you really shrunk it down to 480mb and it still has a GUI and everything works normally please share what exactly you removed.

I do not think it is possible.
Windows Server 2008 Standard with everything removed is 850mb.

    Can anyone answer this:
Does Windows Server 2008 Core have a UI?

    I am re-installing Windows Server 2008.
    I did AHCI incorrectly.

I don't know for sure, but I did hear that you can install it without a GUI, so maybe that is the non-gui mode.

Cut that RAM usage in half!

I am trying to "move in" and make Windows Server 2008 my regular operating system.

I really messed up with the AHCI. I didn't set the SATA ports to act as AHCI.

Now, I have the Intel Chipset drivers installed (8.something.something.11) from the Gigabyte website (The Intel site had a lower version, of their own drivers?).

I may configure a nice Debian install (Linux) to compare RAM usage.
I know just sitting in the UI, Debian only uses 67mb of RAM.

Place how RAM much Windows Server 2008 uses just sitting at the UI with all the un-needed services turned off and no background processes other than the system here.
