I made a poor statement. I could run games at 1.35v all day without ever crashing. The operating system would never crash. Super Pi would crash over 8M and Prime 95 would crash after 15 minutes. I didn't realize a VID of 1.225v was considered high. Considering an earlier post of the "GO" stepping at 1.20 was only seen a handful of times.

I thought I've seen u state somewhere that ur VID is 1.3v, if that's not the case the I am sorry I must have confused you with another user. But with a nice VID of 1.225v you must be really unlucky with the batch to have such poor voltage to performance results. I've tested my L737B393 on 3.6GHz (9x400) on 1.32v and it's stable for a few hours of priming. Only problems are temps and cheap motherboard, which refuses to run 3.6GHz with 8x multiplayer cuz it can't handle so much juice. That's why for now I'm staying on the settings visible in my sig.

My vid is 1.3 . I was spiing just before @ 4.4ghz but its a little un-stable. Im priming now @ 4.1, 1.7v and its nearly finished the OCCT stability test. I should be able to squeeze more out of this yet.

I have been out of the quad core scene for a while and I'm wondering what is the real OC expectation with one of the most recent quad batches? It is the X38 a better platform for this CPU? It is a way to check the real VID without installing the CPU?

ok, so i finally got some nerve and OCed the Q just a bit. its only 333x9. hardware moniter reports vcore at 1.22 (set at 1.25 in bios)..i read that a v drop is kinda normal..idle temp stayed the same at 33-34c.

dled core temp and my VID is indeed 1.3

not really much of a story since everyone else is doing 3.6+ but its great for what i need it for. hearing everyones stories here made me feel bad about not getting more out of my chip..

one question, is it important at all to use a solid integer memory multiplier like 2 or 3 instead of 2.x and 3.x.. i think im at 2.4 right now to get 800 at 1.8v. are decimal multipliers more stressful on the northbridge?? thanks for any info.

i read a review somewhere that the x38 does not oc any better than a p35. only real advantage is the sli or crossfire abilities. they used an intel reference x38 board in the review though so its possible that a partner company can make it more OCable. the review basically said if your not gonna sli or crossfile, the p35 will serve you fine. they tested mem performance and everythign and they are both equal if you take a margin of variability into account. its kinda the same as the nforce 680 and 650 chipsets, one is made for sli the other, while capable at 8x, is not "optimized" for true 16x sli. too bad the p35 only does 4x and so is not even worth it.

I can run my quad core at 1.225v all day at 3.2GHz but it could crash at any time and has, but is quite stable. Getting to 3.6Ghz takes 1.4v
I can run my Q6600 @ 4GHz with 1.475v all day long but it crashes too. Just being able to run all day at a certain clock doesn't make it stable. I can play videos, music and light gaming but if I Fold or Prime or try Encoding it'll crash/lock/reboot/blow up instantly!

I don't use that old program anymore, just stick with Prime95 v25.6 for 32 or 64 bit's multicore and OCCT2.0.a.

My Q6600 is G0 stepping, I just came to the computer store, and asked them for Core 2 quad with g0 stepping. Hehe the 1st they said they hadnt got that G0 stepping, but when i stepped out the store, they yielded that " Please come back, we just got it from other dealer" ^^. So i got what i want, hmn all the computer store just wanna sell out that B3 steeping, because they know exactly that people're no longer want to buy that such B3 stepping core 2 quad Q6600.

    Hi all,

Seems like I have hit a wall with my Q6600 and am just a wee bit disappointed. I have the Giga-byte GA-x38-DS4 with Q6600 G0 water cooled setup, 4GB G.skill PC2-8000. Nvidia 8800 GTS 640MB also water cooled.
So currently I have the board running at 9x400 with the bios voltage set to 1.65(shows 1.6 under load in CPUZ). I have a water cooling setup and its showing load temps around 57-62C

Here are the rest of the settings in the bios.
    FSB 400
    PCI 100
    Memory at 2.00B
    5-5-5-15 G.skill 2x2GB
    voltages
    CPU voltage: 1.65
    DDR voltage: +0.2
    (g)MCH: +0.15
    FSB voltage: +0.1
    loadline calibration: disabled

rest of the settings are on Auto/Normal

even with these settings I am not 100% stable in Prime95.
I can really only get stable at around 3.4GHz with 378x9 and 1.5v in bios

    any ideas?

try ddr voltage at +.3. i think the specs are 2.0v to 2.1, yours might be at the end of that spectrum.

OK that has definately made the 3.6GHz setting way more stable. Thanks for that tip.
I'll try out the higher speed options later tonight to see if I can get 3.8 stable enough to boot windows.

Really Enkur if you already need 1.65 for only 3.6ghz ditch that Q6600 as it a horrible CPU... no need to invest more time in it, what do you want to give it for 3.8ghz 1.7 volts ? For the ram if the bios allows it set TRFC to 50plus that wil help stability too

... and why do you run loadline calib disabled ? this is the only feature that gives you a more stable clock at a lower voltage...
Question : Why do some overclockers switch into d*ckmode when money is involved

Remark : They call me Pro Asus Saaya yupp, I agree

I have my q6600 ROCK SOLID STABLE at 3.6, 1.33v no vdroop control. I have run OCCT for hours on end and have spent several hundred hours encoding video with it like that. P95 has run over night like this with no problem. I also have C1E enabled so it drops to a 6x multiplier when not under load. I have some water cooling (nothing too special) and I run in the mid 40's under load and upper 20,s at idle. I have never had the OS crash on me. I have had the same installation of XP since December when I bought the mother board. And I have a 1.225 VID chip too.

I thought there would be a flurry of results based on all the price drops recently. Picked one up at Frys for $190. My first Quad since price/performance were never aligned above the $200 mark.

Decided to take a break from the conga line of air coolers crossing my bench recently and just go for a simple water kit the Swiftech H20-220 Compact. I thought about breaking out my old more robust water gear but I remember getting tired of wrestling with hoses when I last had a water loop on my bench. This kit's reservoir is in the rad and the pump is in the block. Super simple mounting as well. But I digress ...

L744B144 pack date 2/26/08. Initially testing looked good with low voltage, but core 0 kept crapping out while other cores Primed happily. Is that common? It didn't help that my Blood Iron is droopier than ever.

Here's a shot of OCCT at the tail end of the default 1-hour run. Good starting point?

That's great!!! Thats about where my voltage is at with mine at 3.6Ghz too. I have tried to get it stable above that and it seems I have to push too much voltage to make it worth it. Since we have the same boards I imagine you will be limited like me unless you want to do a volt mod.

Anyway, glad to hear you got it to 3.6Ghz.
