I think there's a FS section around here, dunno about getting $200 though as folks are gonna throw the EX38 at you to drive down the price.

    The X38 is discontinued.

    Since......?

I picked an open-box up from NewEgg last week. Haven't had a chance to test it. I've got about a week to determine if I should keep it. Waiting on a set of aXeram 1200+ (which don't ever seem like they will materialize) has kept me from slapping my current stuff on.

This board has the sticker that is covering up the screenprinted (GA-X48-DQ6). Rev. 1.0 and a SLALJ chipset L737A944.

    Keeper?

Do they even sell new X38s anymore? I bought an EX38 about 3 weeks ago, and at that time they did not have new X38s.

No they do not sir. You can probably get them at some screw you over type place for like $350 still I'm sure though. They have stopped making those.

The only difference I saw was the Realtek LAN controller and lack of Silent Cool pipes. Is the PCB better/worse?

And from the perspective of gentlemen who have used this board, should I keep it? As stated above, it seems to have a "legit" X38 chipset not an ES.

    Thanks.

EX38-DQ6 uses the same X38 chipset as X38-DQ6. There are only small modification on PCB like memory lights. X38 with the latest bios, suports the same features as EX38 (Energy Saver useless for overclocking ...).

Thanks for the info! I guess I keep it unless someone else suggests otherwise...

I thought this board could do DES....no matter.

Wish me luck on my aXeram hunt. You'll most likely be hearing from me again.

I feel that we all need to try to get a handle on these ettings as they are probabl key to getting better more stable overclocking results but, we have not delved into them at all.

Well im back (if u guys remember me) I had a x38 DQ6 that i rma'd with a few minor issues, even though i was happy with the board overall. (6 weeks ago in fact but dont get me started on the lame RMA process)

I got a X38 DQ6 back, put in my new E8400 and 8800GT and wow its so much more stable than the first one with the E6600.

Those 45nm;s CPUs are noticably better than previous models. They stay cooler, overclock easier and dont require much if any extra voltage. I really recommend them to anyone thinking about it.

The X48's were released in Australia today (26th) so they will be coming to a store near you very soon. (my plan of getting my X38 replaced with X48 didnt pan out...o well)

The X38's are obsolete but there are plenty of Ex38's around.

One problem with the E8400's is the temperature reading programs dont seem to be accurate. Reports way higher than in the bios but other than that im a very happy X38 user.

Ok im going back in the bios to crunch some numbers...cya.

    Looks like X48 DQ6 is about $50 dearer than (E)X38 DQ6.

I ordered the Q9450 and it's en route....went with an OEM. I don't need retail or crappy stock coolers anyways.

When i get my water cooling for my CPU, i plan to push my board over 500FSB. Right now im running 445fsb 24/7, i guess my question is will this NB heatsink handle it on stock cooling?

I have the X38-DS4, the last thing i need is a dead board

A guy I know bought one of those and it needs 1.39v to be stable at 3.6Ghz. Pretty dissapointing, IMO...

I'm concerned about processor degradation, so if i need too much voltage i'll run a lower OC. 3.4GHz would be fine

Can't afford to burn out a $400 CPU

By the time is burnt out it will be long gone ,and out of your hands , I have never hand a CPU go on me apart from my ole 350mhz AMD that I blew up trying to overclock many years ago haha , back in the days when we had to overclock using Jumpers on the board.

Dont be shy with that voltage give it a good crack haha , only pay attention to your temps and youll be fine, besides you have money to burn life is 2 short to play things safe I reckon.

I seriously want to know about the following though.

On a side note I was able to get my memory happy with Extreme setting and 6 performance level, "woot" . I have now a latency of 56~. The extreme setting knocked that down like 3 ms. I haven't tested to see what my score in 3dmark 06 is now. I actually scored a 15700 the other night when messing with my memory settings and that was before getting it to run at Extreme.

Got my Xeon X3550 yesterday. Board is X38-DQ6 .The board posted with original BIOS , F3 (it was sitting around for some time now waiting for the 45 nm quads). First thing was to check the temperature in BIOS as the CPU fan was moving very slowly like 300 RPM . ( using a PWM fan with an aftermarket cooler). Was showing 31 C. I updated the BIOS to F8, no problems here (reset the CMOS imediatelly after). Check the settings in BIOS all seems OK.Vcore at stock, default settings. I'm using Mushkin 2x4 GB modules, set the voltage to 2.0 V and the timings to 4-4-4-12 as per specs. Run Memtest86 for 30 minutes all ok. Changed the FSB to 400 MHz lock PCI to 100 and change the memory strap to be 1:1 (800 MHz). Run Memtest for about 1 hour and half all Ok. Check BIOS temeperature shows 35C for CPU. Fan now moving at about 1800 RPM. Went to sleep, more tests and installing the OS (go for Vista x64) today an in weekend. If all stability test are ok may try go to 3.4 GHz, but my main goal is stable 24/7 without trying to push the limits as I keep computers for about 4 years between upgrades so my next system will be some post-Nehalem 16 core most likely...
