sometimes i really do think "why do i bother?"

to me it seems like WCG and the other projects arn't actually doing alot in regards to curing diseases at all! there is years and years of work thats been done but no actuall results - it seems more like an e-peen project to see who can install the APP on the most machines to get more and more points...

DDTUNING really doen't *OWN* all those machines himself?

Should only be ~2 weeks to 2 Mil. Still floors me that DDTung does that much in two days.

Sierra, this is a great service you provide for the team, Thanks!

At my current rate of production (approximately 1000 BOINC points a week), it will take me 20 years to get a million points.

That's why you save up $500 or so, buy a nice cheap bare-bones Core2 system (case is optional ) and have that running somewhere 24/7. Something like an E4x00 (or even E21x0), cheapest P35 board you can find, 2 Gb of cheap RAM (with an 800FSB CPU you can probably get away with 667Mhz RAM), and a small HDD.

My friend is giving me a pentium 4/ pentium 4 celeron before too long that I hope to put WCG on. As I am a student, I have very limited funds, but I hope to have saved up enough money to build a real computer around the end of may/beginning of june. I already have a Pentium D, which I will overclock and use for a little while, and then I hope to get a q6600. At 3.4GHZ, that thing would really produce. Also, a friend of mine is building a q6600 rig soon that he said I can put WCG on. So it really isn't too long until have some real point-producers.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, in 10 years ( half that time ) I'm sure a throwaway cheapie computer will do 1 mill in a week or two =)

Besides.. is that in boinc points, or WCG points that you are setting as a goal? At 7k wcg points to 1k boinc points.. it'll take less than 3 years to get to 1 mill! There's only 30 or so of us right now with 1 mill boinc points, so most of the million plus numbers ya see are all in WCG points... Not sure if they are going to keep that system once they dump the UD client completely or what they will do.

I think I am going to set my current goal as 1 million WCG points. I currently have around 23k. When I get some new computers my output should increase significantly.

    A good goal
And its strange how computers seem to come out of the woodwork to add production when you are on this team......

You'll get there sooner than you think

Why do we bother? That's a very good question and I had days where I asked myself why do I incur an electric bill that I really can't afford and stretch every penny I can get my hands on for upgrades, etc.
    Why?
The answer is really that WE are the people with the machinery that can cut years out of the time needed to find cures for these diseases.
Yes, US, right here, right now.
Many advances have been found in the past few years.
Look at AIDS just 10 years ago.
Get diagnosed with it then and the odds were you'd be dead in 12-18 months.
Now through a combination of drugs one can survive with aids for years and hopefully in that "bought" time a cure will be found.
    Why do we do this?
Our kids, our parents, our friends.
it may take years but it will happen and if you ever saw a kid in a hospital suffering from cancer, lukemia or any of those nasty diseases you'd have your answer in that kids face.

Now as to DDT I'll say this:
Those 40 quads are his, bought by him, run by him, maintained by him.
He also has some office Dells and maybe some old dual xeons and opty's left.
    I'm not sure on those.
One thing you can be sure of is his personal dedication.
This isn't some guy that owns a company and has the app installed on all the office machinery and thats it.
He goes way beyond that at a level I don't know if anyone else commits to.
Now he isn't the type of guy to brag and I can respect that but he is the type to be admired and respected for what he does.
There are not that many things left on my "wish" list in life but one is to meet him and shake his hand for what he's done.

How many quads do you have to your name now Plus there are those dual-socket server rigs you've been hinting at about getting soon.
