Hmm ok, so the problem is the 4:5 divider? Are there also issues with the 3:4 divider? 'cause if there isn't (even if it means a BIOS upgrade), I'd use that divider.

Hope this helps, also remember that the GTL volts should be amost 20% of whatever you have cpu/norhtbridge set to, or that is at least how i read into it...
I've got a Q6600 B3, and unfortunatly it DOES need about 1.6v in the BIOS to hit 3.55Ghz

Yeah, I'm hoping that the rumoured price drops for the Q6600's come soonish, then I'll go shopping for a nice G0 stepping (unless a Q9450 can hit 500+ fsb...).

But until then... Argh! This freaking RAM! I tried getting it to run on the 3:4 divider, and it's still not playing ball. It'll MemTest (at least for a while) at 1040Mhz on 2.2v (measured by DMM) with 6-6-6-18 timings (all other sub-timings auto), but as soon as I drop it back to 5-5-5-15 timings, MemTest is Error City.

    This is all done with:
    CPU: 390 x 9
    CPU PLL: 1.5v
    NB: 1.45v
    CPU GTL: x0.61
    NB GTL: x0.57

Should I be looking at playing around with some of the sub-timings? And if yes, which ones? Or would my best bet be to stick with the 5:6 divider, drop back to an 8x multiplier and see how high I can get the FSB? Also, would updating to the 602 BIOS be of any help? It's supposed to have better RAM options, yes?

    Hey guys,

I've just picked up a P5E and I'm having a wee issue getting the vcore to stick.
No matter what I set it to in the bios, it reads around 1.3 in cpu-z.
Though if I turn the pot as I'm sitting in windoz I can see the vcore go up.
Is there a little tip anyone can give me to get this to work ?
This is only the 2nd Asus board I've used for benching, the other was a P5K3 and it was fine, other than that all other boards have been from Abit.

    Full setup.

    P5E vCore mod
    Two 3870X2 in CF
    Vista 64
    Zippy 600 + OP750

Also if anyone knows where the read point is, I'll check it with a DMM

Yes, there is a trick. You have to type the value you want manually in bios instead of using +/- . (RTFM )

I should have put that in my post, I know that you have to type the value in yourself.
The thing is, it still shows what I typed in on the re-boot, but it's just not giving me it as far as I can tell.

And yes I did look at the Manual, I'm asking here as I'm at a loss to why I can't get it to play nice.

    Hi Deanzo,

just an idea, but can you try flashing to a different BIOS and see if the problem still occurs?

    Hey mate,

The board came with 402 (I think) I've flashed it to 601 but still the same issue, it's very odd I've never had something like this before and I'm not what you would call new to overclocking (**looks over at avatar before someone tells me to "RTFM" again**)

I read in this thread a number of guys had issues with 602 so I haven't tried that one yet.

If I knew where the read point was I'd test it with a DMM, just not sure whats going on

I too would love a read point for the vCore on the P5E. I've got the vDIMM read point, but I'd love to check what the actual vCore is like compared to what BIOS and CPU-Z says.

All of that is done from within the Extreme Tweaker (Although my mobo manual oddly calls it AI Tweaker) section.

You need to change AI Overclock Tuner to "Manual", and that'll give you access to your RAM timings, FSB, multiplier, ratio and voltages.

here's what i did >> this is a paste of part of a post of mine @ Asus P5E forums>>>>>>>>

i'd start ALL over, load 602 bios ,wipe the drives, use the new memory 4gb at a time in a1 & b1 slots ,install 64bit, boot ,check Vista rating ,add the other 4 gb in 2a, 2b ,, load the updates ,then the intel Raid drivers ,there is a newer driver from intel windows will find it for u if enable other products in win update , then setup the raids , then go into bios on Tweaker page , set to super memory profile ,set ddr2@1033 , set timings at 5-5-5-15 ,set twister to moderate ,page down set DRAM VOLTS at 1.96 you have to key in values . then ; LEAVE EVERYTHING ESLE ON AUTO: hit f10 to save & exit

then the machine will lock, hold pwr button down you'll get a real quick start & stop with black screen , hold pwr button down agin (might have to do this twice) till you get a screen saying your o/c has failed THEN select f1 to return to your failed settings (f2 will set all settings back to default ) re-enter the tweaker page, page down to DDR setting >>this time it will allow you set at DDR1002. recheck that all the settings are the same as u set the 1st time except the ddr which now should be set at 1002 then hit f10 to save & exit ,it'll then boot intoVista

i've done this 5 times now & it's allways came out the same twice on bios 502 & 3 times now on bios 602

cpuz show my memory volted at 2.1 asus ai shows 2.2 volts with the bios DRAM settings of 1.96 volts

    asus ai shows
    fsb;1335.85
clock speed 2003.73 idle 3004.80 MHz under load
    bus speed 0333.96 X 06.0
    cpu volts 1.3360v

CPUZ shows core voltage @ 1.336v
clock speed idle 2003.7 load 3004.7 MHz
    bus speed 333.9
    multiplier X 6.0
memory timings = dram frequency 500.9MHz
    fsbRAM 2;3
    clocks @ 5-5-5-15-45 volted 2.100v
    comand rate 2t
    rated FSB 1335.8

hope this helps ! ;-} i've been rock solid stable at these setting

now we NEED to know where to measure NB and FSB

i'd need thinner/longer probes to try more places.

i found the 1.5v SB point if it's of any interest, i can make a pic

Yeah, the vDIMM point is pretty easy with just the standard DMM probes, but I I think I'm going to need thinner probes (and possibly not have the mobo in the case ) in order to read the vCore.

i don't have much problem going there with my TRUE, but differrent HS, or WC setup will makes the task difficult

i was bored so here we go for the SB 1.5v Measure Point

    it's pretty dead on - 1.5(bios) 1.496(dmm)

I thought I would add some input relating to ram for the P5E.

I recently switched from the 2x2Gb G.Skill DDR2 1000 because I was forced to run the ram sub timings on auto due to the tRFC needing to be set at 52 at higher MHz. The bios only allows a max of 42 ATM.

I am now testing the 2x2Gb Ballistix DDR2 800 Cas4 set. I am currently running them at DDR2 900 with 2.16v set in bios (verified with fluke multimeter) at 4-4-4-12 timings. The G.Skill would only run at Cas5 at DDR2 900. They are curently in their 6th hour of memtest with no errors. So it looks like the Micron D9NHL ICs are very compatible with this board.

I'll update this post with more results later this week.

I also just wanted to say thanks to everyone at this forum. This is probably the most referenced forum on the net, and that is saying quite a lot for everyone here at XtremeSystems!

I saw that it is still in beta, so I wanted to wait for it to become official (601 was passed over). I wasnt able to run the windows utility to backflash in Vista 64, so I didnt want to risk it. But it seems that the new bios are now backflashable...

Thank you for the reply. I am still quite impressed with the Ballistix as they are running at tighter timings clock for clock (so far).

Special thanks to Karl eller for the post on vdimm points. I used my Fluke 177 digital meter and read the yellow and one of te blue marked readout point from his post.

When I set the vdimm in bios to 2.16v, I get a reading of 2.21v from the multi meter. However, when I set the vdimm to 2.18v in bios, I get a reading of 2.238v on the meter. And finally, when I set vdimm to 2.2v in bios, I get a reading of 2.25v on the meter. This makes it very hard for those without a multimeter to know the true vdimm.

I did find that my 1.40v vcore set in bios, which loads into windows at 1.38v as shown in CPU-Z, actually is 1.376v when metered while running Orthos.

Let me just add that this is a great board. With a dual core, it is able to push 515 FSB with just 1.43v to the NB:

Odd, still can't key the numbers in for the vcore and make them stick, but using the +/- works and sticks

Got the read points done as well tonight, vcore and vDIMM and I've got 25lt of ln2 just sitting there waiting to be used.

1st time I put a vCore away from Auto I had to key it in manually, then after that it's always +/- .

Looking forward to see how you go on LN2 mate, I'm thinking of getting a SS mid year, and will prolly end up using this board. Trying to get a cheap core2 for the kids PC so I can set up my e8400 on a bench for testing.
