I forgot to add: Praz, the CPU-z ini edit seems to have worked. I changed the Sensor setting from "on" to "off" and CPU-z seems to be stable.

Now if I could only figure out something to get my CPU stable @ 3.6GHz...

    try 2.22v on ram
first get cpu stable than work on ram
dont fine tune delays first get it stable than play with it
are you sure your shellshocks are d9gmh and not d9gkx
    d9gkx likin only cas 4 on this board @ 2.22v i get 4-4-4-12@1060mhz
hey thx zsamz_. ill try those settings when i can.

on praz's site with a vtt set to 1.4 i would need values of 97/94/95 for the required 67% of vtt. so for 68% as you say, should i use the values for the 1.43 vtt of 98/96/97 to get 68%?

about the cellshocks, should i take off the heatspreader and check?
i believe they have a thermal paste instead of a pad so i could just reapply paste with mx-2 if needed i think.

also kinda off topic i took the heatspreaders off of my ballistix tracers, but dont know what chips they are.

    chips say 0731-25f
    -TJ07
    -Core i7 920
    -Rampage II Extreme

you gonna void warranty lol just test them
good thing you didnt rip the chips off the pcb on the ballistix
if you can do 1100mhz 4-4-4-12 with 2.3v i think they are d9gkx
on this board all my d9ghm likin cas 5 "3 pairs"
my mushkins not stable cas 5 even with 2.3v i wont run 24/7 2.3v+
i'm runin my mushkin set now i'm stable with 2.22v 1060mhz 4-4-4-12 if i set them 5-5-5-15 i get errors even windows crashes
to top it off i can set performance to 7 now instead of 8

Can you elaborate on the above for us as I'm kind of confused. GTL reference voltages are derived from VTT. CPU GTL 1/2 and 0/3 move the setpoints for the two CPU GTL reference voltages. NB GTL moves the setpoint for the NB GTL reference voltage. In the above what is GTL doing for what is listed as "2 cpuvtt"

New member here. Set up a system with the DFI X38, and just wanted to add some input about 3rd party coolers. I'm using the Thermalright Mosfet 9S Type 2 cooler, it fits, for anyone thinking about using it, but if you don't use the thermal pad provided it will actually short out the components above the mosfets that it rests on. (It bridges them all.) Luckily, I don't think my board was damaged.

Quick question. Seeing 42C idling for an hour with the Noctua NC-U6 northbridge cooler...is this higher than normal? I'm not overclocked yet. Ambient is about 22C.

Yes, I would say that is higher than what I am getting on the stock cooler. So far my highest under load was 38C, but that is with the CPU fan blowing across the NB heatsink.

As far as all I'm reading they all should be a % of the VTT value and the first 2 are for the CPU (core0 to core-4) that's why so effective for Quad's stability and the last one is as Praz said for NB.

So I really wonder how people get crazy variations in the numbers like 84-84-96, or 95-97-102?!?!

If all is a % to the VTT and the VTT is fixed (1.4v example) why aren't they the same 96-96-96 or 99-99-99?

the VTT charts available are based on actual measurements of VTT voltage on board, it seems that 2/3 is always a bit lower than 0/1. Thats why you see values like
    96 (0/3)
    95 (1/2)

AS FAR AS I UNDERSTAND now and with the help what praz said:

I look at my VTT voltage in bios (what bios says, not what i SET it...) , then i set 0/3 and 1/2 69% of VTT and NB Ref GTL at 68% of VTT. I think this is how its done.

---> But i STILL didnt get an answer what would be a reasonable, max CPU VTT voltage! <--------- !!

Btw. my 6600 CPU totally sucks, i dont understand it. How can it be prime stable at 3537 - but if i add only 15mhz i immediately BSOD !!

I need to know what causes the BSODS...and why OCCT not only gives me a "crash" (calculation error) but always those BSODs, sometimes 2 seconds after i start OCCT. 15mhz less and i can run prime stable!!

Also, in regards to straps in bios: 266/... 333/... and 400/...

I did some testing and noticed that the 400/... strap gives me higher latencies, also if i run ram FASTER than with 266 strap. Same timings and ram even slower under 266/... everest shows me better benchmarks and lower latencies! Like 57 compared to 65ns udner 400 strap.

I chose 400 strap and set ram fast and SAME timings and get very bad latencies.

The difference is in actual board to board variation of set voltages, line impedance and circuit noise. Also the variation in the characteristics of the individual CPU and Northbridge plays a part.

L741, Vid right now (as set in bios) 1.40something - 1.41. Dont want to go higher

my problem is not instability, but rather BSODS if i go higher. playing with GTL ref right now and VTT.

I give up. Can't do 4ghz+ stable but... I can boot into windows @ 4.5ghz, go figure..

Latest settings I tried on this E8400 that got me stable for 29minutes.

    450FSB
    333/667 Divider
    Vcore 1.4
Dram 2.2 Volts 5-5-5-15 everything else on Auto
These are Micron D9's btw PC6400 2gig kit of Ballistix
    NorthBridge 1.4v
    Southbridge Untouched.
CPU VTT 1.4v (Lower = Prime fails in under 6mins)
    CPU 0/2 GTL: 97
    CPU 1/3 GTL: 94
    NB GTL: 96

Seems as I screwed with the GTL's I got it more stable.

Anything I'm doing wrong :/ ? I've been trying stuff for hours, took naps while running prime. Thank god I'm home for 2 weeks lol.

Too funny.... I didn't expect you to let it go. Why don't you tell me how THAT post is helping anyone? You know it all man. We are all peons compared to you. Normally i would stay out of it but you were displaying the same attitude to him that you did with me. Someone disagrees with you and you start slinging insults. Both immature and annoying.

Cool I'm going to try that Praz. "I think that was directed to me those settings, I hope"

If this doesn't work out I wonder if I should buy better ram than my D9's or new razer blades to slit my wrists with? lmfao

If this doesn't work out I wonder if I should buy better ram than my D9's or new razer blades to slit my wrists with? lmfao
With the 667 divder your ram shouldn't be an issue.

    Btw Praz,

Thanks for your fast response / help.

Seeing all these mixed GTL's in threads. Which would you recommend I use for 445fsbx9 ? Should I follow the ones I already tried, use AUTO ?

Each system is different but I've been as high as 480 FSB using auto settings.

On a side note it's to bad this thread can't stay on-topic.

Unhappy I used the same basic cooler on my P35-T2R WITH thermal pad and it still shorted out

(It bridges them all.) Luckily, I don't think my board was damaged.

Quick question. Seeing 42C idling for an hour with the Noctua NC-U6 northbridge cooler...is this higher than normal? I'm not overclocked yet. Ambient is about 22C.
Just thought I would mention that my DFI LanParty P35-T2R MB shorted out when I switched to Thermalright Mosfet 9U cooler, even though I used thermal tape and had insulating washers between nut and bolt (had to modify mount/cut off ears for push pins).

Am now waiting for new DFI X38-T2R, but won't use the Thermalright cooler in future. However, I will add an extra fan to cool PWM area.

Just wanted to say thanks Praz for all that you do in here ... I read all the posts in this thread, though I don't have a lot to contribute ... I just keep playing around with my Q6600 on this board and seeing what it can do ... and I'd be completely lost without your dedicated input and advice ... so please keep up the good work ... Your welcome AKHandyman. Most of what I post I found out the hard way. There's no sense in all of us having to do things that way.

Good news on the CPU-Z issue. Just got done testing and it works fine with both 32Bit and 64Bit versions of Vista. The next release from Frank will hopefully put this problem behind us.
