Yeah I actually completely removed the stock heatpipe/heatsink assembly to replace the stock TIM with something better. In my case it came off with reasonable effort, not to much work but I took my time so nothing broke! The tough part was fully removing the stock TIM left on the heatpipe/heatsink along with cleaning the NB, SB, and Crosslinx chips! After that I used MX-2 and then very carefully replaced the stock heatsink/heatpipe assembly making sure everything was properly attached and made good contact! In my case I hadn't done much preliminary testing so I can't say if it made any difference but I assume it did based on how bad the factory applied the stock TIM!

EDIT: Just realized you found the answer to your own question, please just disregard everything I wrote, lol!

and in case that thread didn't mention it or to emphasize if it did...use acetone (nail polish remover) to clean off the stock TIM. 30 seconds with pure acetone and it will be shining...or spend hours peeling, picking, rubbing it off with other solvents
i don't quote in my signature, but best WR ever...

You bet! I usually use googone, but nail polish might be more affective.

    Off topic:

Just got my Extreme today, picked up an E8400 for now, not sure which bios comes stock, but curious to whether the Maximus Extreme supports 45nm right outa the box ? If not, I'm S.O.L. and may need to pick up a last Gen chip to flash bios ;(

Hope this is not the case. Crossing fingers

Thanks, seems to me that Asus might be doing somethign wrong with BIOS on 45nm, i changed to my P5K3 Deluxe and could do easily FSB 530 if i disable transaction booster but this makes Super Pi times on 2M a good 2 seconds slower. If i leave it on i top around FSB 500 on P5K3 Deluxe, didnt try to disable Transaction Booster on X38 because clock for clock it sucks then.

Might just do that and test again.

Metro.cl- the key value for me to get the FSB going were both Nothbridge and Vfsb voltages. Obviously with the E8400 we're running into 2 walls - the CPUs and the Mobos FSB. I tried the E8400 on phase only managed to get up to about 555 FSB not sure if it was the CPU or the mobo - probaby both. Vpll had hardly any impact for me - 2V+ only did harm.

Thks will have to try your settings, but i was with that Vcore and in Miami, what kind of air cooling are you using?

Never tryed such high clocks as you use maybe my problem is that i became a chicken

I am a chicken too when it comes to running 24/7, but for a quick bench here or there...

Actually I live in Vegas now - and it's a bit cooler..at least at the moment, but not much longer...

Vcore - yikes ,well my CPU is a dog - I had another E8400 before that did 4.75 with 1.65V and a max FSB of 575 on a Maximus Deluxe, but it was my first Wolfsdale and I thought it was not good enough ( hoping for 600+ ) and put it up on ebay - too bad now that I realized how good it really was.

This E8400 really scales only with massive Vcore - had it up to 1.9V (air ) and still kept going up clockwise - obviously I only ran 1Ms and nothing to really stress it ...and it still runs happily

Another thing to look into is SouthBridge voltage - not sure if it truly has any impact, but might be worth checking out.

CPU GTL might help to lower the vlaue depending on your CPU, I had more luck with another CPU using the 0.53X setting

    Thanks in advance

About crossfireX, I have put three 3870's in and all three were recognized. The board's crosslinx chip kicked in automatically and according to GPU-Z the first card was in PCI-E 2.0 x16, second and third cards in PCI-E 1 x8. So I dont see why crossfireX would have a problem when the drivers are released.

mikeguava - your setting is not fully 3D stable ... it is stable in Orthos/prime95/memtest ... but every 3D game after some time crashes ... like always on this mobo with higher FSB then 400MHz ...

argh -sorry 'bout that. Honestly I only tried priming and benchmarking ( including 3Ds). The voltages i posted are waaaay to high for 24/7 to begin with. I just got a second board and will be able to look more deeply into FSB clocking that board.

Please disregard my settings for anything other than a reference for quick benchy.

We have been able to use the board @ 450 for daily work ( video editing) and ran into an occasional crash ( like every 12hours or so ); but in my mind I had blamed these crashes on running 4GB of ram without truly testing the rams limits. It might after all be the board itself - but so far I am pretty happy and doubt that there truly is a 400FSB wall on the board itself.

    Hi Everybody

I built a new rig with this motherboard, a QX9650 and DDR3 Corsair Dominator PC3-14400

I'm not using watercooling. The processor has a Zalman CNPS9700 for Cooling.

I'm worried because my NB is 57 degrees at stock speeds. Is it normal?

How much overclock could I get without using watercooling?? I'm afraid to start changing the values of voltages and frequencies because I don't want to ruin my system.

I'm planning to get a Watercooling kit for this motherboard but i've seen they are sold in the UK or Germany. Where can I buy the watercooling blocks in USA?

    Thanks for your help.
