780i SPP/NF200 (NB) Water Block from Viper John - Finally!!

780i is an improvement on the 680i in many areas but they've still got the same guy mounting the chipset sinks.
Remounting them should be done first thing out of the box.

That S/B finger poke was fun with the 680i too. Watching the temps go up n down as the sink rocked back n forth.

I actually got to bench a little last night. I had the CMOS battery out of the original board for days and tried it and whammo...it booted. But that's in another thread...

I tried the finger poke mod that Viper John said and dang if I couldn't reduce my SB temps from 81c in BIOS to 68c just by pushing on the heat pipe cooling solution above the SB chip. I had already re-TIM'ed the mosfets, SB, and NB chips. Someone should write this up and get it stickied...13c improvement just by shaving the foam around the SB cooler. Remarkable...

no wont fit the striker, i believe the PCI e chip is relocated near the SB but MIP has a block for the striker

nice, so would a regular 680i block fit the nb of the striker ii then?(and yeah, formula, not extreme)

nope i have a striker II formula too and im waiting for the ek solution, tried a mcw30 and the mount is too short, there probably a block out there that could be retro fitted to work but its not the same as the 680i thats for sure.

if i had access to a cnc i would have a block for it in a heartbeat. i already have drawings, just waiting for other before sharing

I bet when you trim the foam surrounds down you MCP temps will drop down to around
45C or so...assuming 1.50V MCP volts which is all ya need. That is what my MCP ran
after I did the foam trim and remount thing with the stock cooler and before I yanked
it off completely.

I don't have the patience to "trim" the foam. What I do is remove it and put some kapton tape instead.

If for some bizarre reason the hs tilts, it won't short the SMCs. Of course, if your stock heat pipes are exerting excessive torsional force on the hs, you should carefully correct their positions first.

The whole point of the foam is to free the assembly line of these considerations. We put foam around the chip and that way we ensure that it won't short or tilt. If the contact is less than ideal, tough.

There are no internal picture because there isn't much to see. The SPP only dissipates 20w
and the NF200 about 7-8w so you only need a wetted plate (1.9 Sq In wet area in my WB)
to cool the crap out of them. Swiftech MCW30 is another example of simple wetted plate).

My 780iWB has bi- directional, asymmetrical flow so more water is directed toward the SPP
die and less toward the NF200 die with less in block flow restriction than a .400 ID hi-flow
hose barb.

It is 3.100" long a 2.280" wide which is as small as I could make it and pickup all four mounting
hole and the SPP/NF200 chip dies.

Internally the Viper 780i SPP/NF200 water block has less flow restriction than a .400" ID
hi-flow hose barb.

You do not need WC on the 780i MCP. An EverCool EC-VC-RE cooler (available for $8.95
at SVC.com) will hold the MCP to about 40C which more than good for that chip.

WC on the Vcore mosfets is even more pointless than it is on the MCP. It does look cool
though.

You might be right...then I should be able to hold my mosfets, SPP/NF200 and MCH to 2c above room ambient. This is just the thing I need when doing extreme benching with LN2 or Dry Ice or my cascade.

My Viper NB Block and Mosfet Heatsinks finally arrived . This is really a nice piece of work. Unfortunately, my better half had the digital camera today so I couldn't take pictures of it. I won't get a chance to install it until Tuesday, then I will take pictures and mount it to the motherboard. I will also lap my Evercool EC-VC-RE and mount that as well. Now if I can just finish modding my case, I'll be able to fire this bad boy up !!!!

I am 100% satisfied with this block. Everything was machined well and the block surface was true. Instead of using the evercool fan, which I had on my old 680, I found a great use for my EK680iNB block. If you use the mounting hardware backwards (brass thumbnut on the bottom of MB) the NB block fits very nicely on the SB. It is a tight fit but if you use zip ties you're all good, but forget about a clamp, way too tight. My MCP is happy at 21C as I type this. Going to do some benches later to see if the Viper block can help with a higher/stable OC on the 9650.
