vista = crap is alot of the reason IMHO but are you using sp1 on vista?
On a side not KTE what bios was it that craped the system for you? it wasn't one you where fudging around with was it 
Also I added fans to SB, NB, and the power area(or whatever its called)...
Think I may try to play with it again soon not 100% sure as I stated I'm happy at 2.55 ATM.
