Just built my first PC. Doing my first overclock too. Here's what I got for now that finally booted up into windows and still going in orthos 1 hour stable now. Are these normals temps with a Scythe SCKTN-2000 100mm Sleeve "Katana 2" CPU Cooler? I am doubting its normal. (Sorry new to overclocking) If not I must have installed the heatsink incorrectly. I am using Arctic Cooling MX-2 compound. Any ideas guys?
PS: Seems like I am not having most of those temp problems you guys are having.

Since everyone seems to be concerned about degradation and voltage. Which would you choose out of these two. I'm leaning toward the 4.3G.
Hey PhilDoc, not bad clocks, but I bet you could go lower with your other voltages and get temps overall down.
Which DFI board?
Thanks, its the X38, I should be able to get lower for NB and VTT on both and maybe Vcore on the top. I only tried using the GTL settings on the bottom run. GTLs are disabled on the top run.
I'm just learning about Intel boards again. First in a few years. Just started playing with GTLs seriously today, so hopefully, when I get things really figured out, the voltages will come down.
One thing, the core voltages run 50C idle regardless of what I do.
That made all the difference for me setting both GTLs + Vtt mad low and NB around 1.35v. Especially when fsb over 500 for 8x and 8.5x. Now that you have some base lines for vcore you can try to change other settings and drop it.
That's going to be my next move. I'll probably spend my next few days of OCing getting GTLs figured out. After that, I need to get the memory set up a little better. I should be able to run a 3/4 divider, but I'll have a lot of testing to do to figure out the best settings.
Sorry for my bad English![]()

Seems high for idle. I'm on air with a TRUE and at that Vcore I idle 30C for cpu and 50C for the cores.
Not sure what to go by, idle on the cores doesn't seem right but the load does.
The cpu temp, is exactly in sync with bios.
The core readings are the same with coretemp and some other apps, they all read the same.

4.4ghz, timings relaxed, um i think this ram his messed. im getting endless Bluescreens when loading windows, ram is at 2.51v, doesnt seem right
Cpu 1.3v VTT 1.4v NB 1.4v
I think you need more vcore, that seems too low.
2.5v for ram? thats too much, even with proper cooling. If thats right, and you only have 1.31v for the vcore, thats not going to be enough. For stability, your probably looking at 1.4+

I adjusted my cpu temp offset in bios (+13) to basically match my Core Temp load readings. Now in Windows Smart Gaurdian is usually within 1~2° of Core Temp load readings and will keep going down to about 30° idle while Core Temp will not go below 42°(I don't know how close to accurate my readings are but they seem realistic so that is what I am going by).
It seems the Penryn based cpus are quite erratic in how Core Temp reads them. It is mentioned in quite a few posts in this thread so it seems quite common.

Mine's dead. I'm guessing my 1.65v+ benching on air back when i got it was the culprit. Had it stable at 1.5v, 1.5v NB, 1.36v VTT, 4303mhz.

Not booting anymore. Tried it on 2 diff boards, diff PSU's, diff RAM. Hope i can get another one quickly, they are still available in limited quantities around here + local importers like to delay rma's forever it seems
Anyway, it's 1.3v or stock max for me when i get a new one![]()

So you kill it with 1.5v Vcore on air? what were your load temps?

Whilst hitting the shower i had a thought i need you guys opinion on.
Intel delayed the Q9770 cpu for what reason? Wasn't it long term stability issues?
Since these run at 400FSB by default i can see some similarity with running an overclocked Wolfdale.
Could it be the same sort of issues some of us experience with our Wolfdales Intel is reffering to?![]()

Haven't heard about the Q9770, but I thought the other 45nm quads were delayed because of instability with high fsb on lower quality mb. I will say one thing, all the talk and now the death of AriciU's cpu has changed what I was planing to try. I think I'll be keeping my cpu below 1.4 vcore until the dust settles a little more. It makes me more concerned when I see that AriciU has pretty much the same cooling as I'm using.

Yeah 1.65v+ 45nm on air is definitely asking for it. Sorry mate. Did you try installing the cpu into a different mobo before realizing it was dead? At any rate, there is a limit to the voltages these cpus can take. If you ask me, we're damn lucky these cpus are even operating at some of the voltages we're giving them on a daily basis.
Does CPU-Z 1.44 show the right vcore value for you guys? I'm on Abit IX38 QuadGT and have the CPU VID set at 1.3375. U-Guru shows about 1.35 while CPU-Z shows 1.5! I'm guessing the U-Guru value is right though?
