I had same problem with E6850 with another version of Core Temps last year. It would show 17C until they updated and fixed it a few revisions later. I believe there are problems with cpu temp monitoring programs reading E8000 series correctly.

CoreTemp 0.96.1 shows a 20-21 difference in temps at idle. Do you think its the probe, mobo, or the chip that is messed up?

Hard to say right now. Many are still having problems with current coretemps. Some complain temps are to high for them at 40C idle.

I would up your NB volts to around 1.47 - 1.49 to start with
Your ram volts are kinda low imo, might want to adjust them alittle higher

if you can post some hardware info that would help alot

And depending on your cpu your vcore for 3.6 are a tad low

Just up vcore and ram volts (if you overclock the ram), you may also need to up NB volts for 3.8GHz I would start at 1.49 on the NB

    good luck

    e8400 and S3 Suspend

I just got the e8400 CPU, and now I can't seem to resume from Suspend any more.
I set the BIOS to S3 only, my old e6600 used to suspend just fine, but now it doesn't come up.

Just dropped a E8400 into my Formula SE (907). My DTS temps are pegged at 45C no matter what I do or what program I use. Looks like the 8XXX series is kinda odd...

With bios 0907 the difference is 10oC from probe to coretemp with E8400.
Just like what i had with 0903 and E6750 cpu.

So in my opinion 0903 reads E6xx temps well and 0907 E8xxx temps

Sounds like a Penrn core and this is normal for any TM capable CPU's since P4 ^xx. This saves power and reduces heat at idle or light load.

2 methods can do this and one is more responsive then the other. 1) is TM1/2 w/ C1E & 2nd) is EIST (Intel branded thermal control; Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology).

EIST is BIOS and chipset controlled so it uses more system resorce and is slower in responding since it has to go through chipset and back. TM2+C1E (C+P State) is much quicker as it is on die and reacts almost seamlessy. Now C+P State only gives the low and high multi at any time, nevedr inbetween. Whereas EIST will step multi from low to high and so you will feel this lag as it steps .5 (for Penryn) each time 1 hole number for Conroe & Prescott).

So in CMOS, disable EIST and enable TM and C1E mode. If overclocked, ASUS ACPI BIOS will automatically disable EIST for you as it is known to be unstable at FSB over 400 anyways. (Only Penryn 1600's will utilize this at 400FSB right now.

Now ASUS does not fully comply to C+P State as it is designed when you take vcore and multi out of AUTO. This is where the vcore would reduce to match the multi when idle or light load. But reducing at least the multi will reduce some heat and wear too.

I went more into this for all so others wll have a better understanding of C Stete and P State functions for ACPI (Advanced Configuration Power Interface).

If in the end, you want fixed multi, then just disable C1E wich reads the VID and Ratio from TM table off CPU. Now it can run full throttle but still have overheat protection of TM (Thermal Magament). In this mode, CPU ratio will only reduce n case of high heat to protect itself and or allow you to enter S4 or power down.
