    Question

Looking for some OC settings for my setup (see sig)

Out of the box I changed the FBS to 333x9 in bios leaving all my voltages on AUTO. I can run 3.0. I ran prime95 for about 1hour without any crashes.

    @ 3.0g 333x9 in bios + volts all auto + 1:1 setting
    Coretemp Idle: 32 32 28 28
    Prime95 Full load = 54 52 50 50

I want to tweak my settings for my hardware.
    1. I dont want to exceed 59d
    2. I would like to see if I could hit 3.2g stable.
    3. Tweak FSB and memory speed.

What should I set in Bios?
What should I set in windows uguru?

Go into the BIOS, change VCore (CPU voltage) to an option at or between 1.25-1.28V, change FSB to 355, save and reboot. IDR your RAM options as in how they're set out, but set your RAM divider to 2:3 for DDR2-1066 at the above setting feeding it 2.2V at 5-5-5-15-30 2T for now.

Then if it starts up, run Prime95 Torture Test>Small FFTs with option "Advanced>Round Off Checking" enabled, (the newer versions, like 25.6 build 6) for at least 6 hours I would say. See how your temperature fairs and if it is fully stable. You can then decide if you want to go higher (depending on temperatures/personal choice/stability/voltage) or try and lower Vcore until you find the lowest VCore which is 100% stable at those frequencies.

Simple, but just take your time and read up online about oc'ing Core 2's.

Heres a link to an overclocking guide to get you going http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/overc...s-p5k-add.html. Use the settings in BIOS - dont bother with windows utilities. First thing I do is disable Q FAN cos I want it as cold as it can be!. If you want to overclock on up to 3.6 or above you probably need a better cooler - the Arctic 7 is good but not good enough for the 4 core temps on load at higher overclocks withmore vcore(1.4v plus). I changed my arctic 7 for an Ultima-90. http://www.anandtech.com/casecooling...oc.aspx?i=3068 Great performance from a nice small form cooler that you wont have a problem fitting in most cases. If you can get there with less volts the Arctic 7 may be okay - you want to aim to try and keep load temps as low as possible. Running 3.6 they tend to be around 60c upward prime load with good air cooling. After you have read the guide and this thread You will soon be an expert-lol!

I got mine from ClubIT and it's a L743A863. It could be a couple of days until I get to test it.

Some times CoreTemp will show an incorrect VID when SpeedStep is enabled. If it ever fluctuates to a higher one, then the higher VID is the correct number.

Max temps On True 120 Extreme 55C loaded afte priming for above settings

Need lower VID Q6600 and lapp it for getting 3.6 24/7 would seem or wait for Q9450 for 8x450?

What did you dump the Crucial for - Its D9 chips and a great overclocker. You weren't pushing it near what its capable of. At the FSB you were on running 1:1 you could probably have had it on CAS=3. Buying Mushkin 2x2GB isn't going to give you anything over them unless your MB has problems with 4x1GB cos it put more strain on it. I suppose it give you 2 spare slots but 4GB is really all thats needed under Vista - there are hardly any standard apps that utilise upto 4gb let alone any games. By the time we need more we will all be onto DDR3 anyway-lol!

I dumped the Crucial because one of my dimms was bad. My boss built a new system at about the same time. He got the same memory as I did. We did some heavy testing on Friday and found we both had bad dimms.

Since then Ive been running on 2x1GB dimms. We both ended up RMA'n one pair. I am giving him my working set for 60$, getting a refund from newegg for mine. I ordered my mushkin memory direct.

Just seems that the crucial memory is hit or miss of good dimms. My boss RMA'd his 2 times now.

Right away I noticed a 2deg drop in temps with 2 sticks vs 4.

Plus I have ALWAYS used mushkin in the past with great sucesss. Plus this is CAS 4. vs crucial cas5.

All in all its about lowering Temps.

I rewired my Antec 900 last night. Moved the Double Fan Bay to the top so the CPU is getting hammered with 2 120mm fans intake, 1 120mm exhaust, plus the 200mm exhaust.

The other fan is on the hard drives at the bottom... Plus there is one on the side door.

    Temps Now2x1gb)
    Full Load Prime95: 52 50 50 51
    Idle Temps 2min wait after full load: 31 27 27 30

    Before4x1gb)
    54 51 50 50 full load
    31 30 27 27 idle.

It seems with the double fan slot on top temps dont bobble or jump around as much. It sits solid at idle or full load without jumping too much after it warms up or cools down.

I still need to rewire the case again. I am not happy with it. I gotta borrow my buddies dremel tool to cut some holes and re-run wires. It could be better.

I need a nicer power supply that I can run custom sized wires, any suggestions?

True - the ballistix do tend to due every so often but have good crucial warranty . The run 4,4,4,9 upto 1066 no problem. I would suggest a modular PSU so you can use different cable lenghts and only the ones you need I like the Hiper 580R that I have http://www.xsreviews.co.uk/reviews/p...yper-580w-psu/
but it depends what you are going to load on the PC.. Its great for the price - plenty higher spec/wattage but cost a lot more e.g enermax or corsair etc.. http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews.p...0w_modular_psu

Its an 'old' 640MB GTS but you can get the new 512MB ones from here if you are UK based. http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...s=42&OrderBy=1
I hope they havent gone out of business -I have always liked gainward - they clock well out of the box without volt mods.

I might be selling my Q6600 L737B270 in a week or so .. it performs fine, it can do 3.5 on 1.35 volts prime stable , which is actually 1.3 in windows, and 1.26 with vdroop, but I've decided that a higher clocking dual core E8400 would benefit me more then a lower clocking Q6600, as I don't water cool so I'd figure I could sell this baby here and give it to someone who can make better use of it's full potential while I use a cooler chip and take it up a little higher for my air cooling.

If my E8400 clocks well, keep your eyes on the "for sale" area later this coming week if you're looking for a Q6600 proven to clock well with low volts, prelapped for your convenience too.

Well I got my l737b at 3ghz 9x334 @ 1.2 vid 8hours prime stable with average 48-50C coretemp. When I try to get 3.6ghz with 1.3vid this beast gets hot quick with 80c with the Tuniq Tower at full blast. I know the l737b are good clockers but are they known to get really hot fast with extra volts?

I hope they havent gone out of business -I have always liked gainward - they clock well out of the box without volt mods.

Cool thanks for the info.... unfortunately I'm in USA...and i haven't found any sellers of gainward on the 4 or 5 sites i checked.

I agree with you the gainward cards always clocked great out of the box without volt mods.
