What about the core and memclocks, the number of shaders per core, etc?

    Besides that, good thinking.

the cores on teh 3850 and 70 are identical one just gets 1.1V and one gets 1.3V the big difference is in the memory

Do we actually know how ATI (or AMD, whatever) decides that this core will be a 3850 and that core a 3870? Is it about yields? Because my guess is that if you overvolt your 3850 core tot 3870 voltages, you can easily "overclock" up to 3870 standards and way beyond. Am I right?

3850 is a single slot cooler, so not really. getting past 3870 clocks is a struggle regardless afaik.

If I wanted a new card here and now it'd be between 3870 x2 and regular 3870

What is so special with it? G80 - very successful chip, vs. R600 - Delayed + complete . What can you expect?

Same goes with Radeon 9k series vs. GeForce 5k series. Or Athlon64 vs. Netburst. Or even C2D vs. Phenom. They ALL have the same "structure", which is being: failed product vs. successful product.

What about when there is good/succesful vs. good/succesful?

U guys know what i find so funny and don't get with all this hype for this card.

    1. the GTX/Ultra is what 1yr and what some 4 months old
    2. it took AMD/ATI 2-3 gen of card to finally compete with nvidia
    3. look at the marginal performance gain in most games that with persons using a 1280x1024 res would notice.
    4. and last but not least i'm definitely buying nvidia's G100 when ever it comes out cuze this card migh be the card to hold of ATI Till 2-3yrs time I'm happy with my gts g92.

PERSONS WITH GTX STILL R PLEASED WITH THEIR PERFORMANCES!!!!

ATI c'mon when will u learn or at least get some good engineers and better driver support!!!

I mean i thought this review would make persons sorry the day they bout a gtx after seeing this review now a year later!!

If you want to play at 1280*1024 go buy HD 3870 ou 8800GT.
Nvidia G100? That´s not even known nothing about. We only know about 9800GX2 to launch in 3 weeks-1 month.

they practically nowhere managed to get real CF improvements and also every benchmark looks like its cpu-limited.

For example look at the small gains from 1920*1200 to 1280*1024.

But then, cpu limited with 3ghz c2q makes no sense at all.

dude, they had multi core GPUs in 2000... 4 pipes = 4 cores

they're trying to split it into fewer smaller dies for the sake of yields. We'll be nearing 2 BILLION transistors within a fairly short amount of time and it's hard to get that onto one die.

it seems that the only problem are drivers as usual....I really hope ati gets that CF compatibilty issue cause a lot of games only use 1 core of the card

We need to pass 1billion first for GPUs

whoever the nvidiot was above.........do me a favor and get back to me in a 1-2 years and tell me if your card still works...........

One major reason I will not buy nvidia........cards die.......I have yet to lose an ati card...even when insanely volted and Oc'ed.....I still have my 9800pro 128 and a 256 model.....O and the 256 model has more voltmods than you can shake a stick at.

x1800xt still works...........x1900xt still works.......both are flashed xtx......

    buddies 7900gtx? = dead.....never oced..........
    my mx 400 = dead

    My ti 4200 = dead

    my ti 4400 = dead

    my ti 4600 = dead

    my fx 5600 = dead

    my fx 5700U = dead

Fx 5950U DOA sent it back grabbed a 9800 pro, tossed on an artic cooling heatsink, gave it insane volts + flashed bios........never looked back....

Geez it almost looks like theres a pattern there...............

Majority of the newer motherboards are based on Intel chipsets, so it really doesnt matter if 2 8800GT cards can beat a 3870X2. ATI will still sell crap load of cards. And if they get the scaling up to par with 2 3870X2 cards those 8800GT cards will mean completely nothing for the majority of users.

If Nvidia actually had larger share of the market with their buggy a$$ motherboards I would agree with you.
There is always the 8900GX2 or (on 9800 which its not..)...

Radeon display driver 8.45 v1.3 will improve performance and compatibility on the Radeon HD 3870 X2 over the current 8.45 v1.0 driver. The current set of driver is facing performance issues with games right now so benchmarks on this set of drivers are not reflective on the actual gaming performance yet.

the drivers have been holding back the launch of the 3870 X2 for quite some time, the v1.3 will still be beta and the real performance will be gained by 8.5. owners of the card will be able to get the drivers from the ATI website. The new set of driver will be out before 28th January according to AMD.

Your argument means nothing, my 9700pro=dead X850XT=dead. All cards will eventually die and no brand has the market cornered on longevity.

Beside, why would you care about the opinion of someone making high end arguments, who still thinks 1280x1024 is still an acceptable resolution to play on a $300+ card.
