The extra 16SP really boost performance of 8800GTS 512MB?

    source: Expreview

As you know, 8800GTS 512MB and 8800GT all based on G92, the difference is 8800GTS has 128SP while 8800GT has 112SP, and 8800GTS upgrade the clock from 8800GT’s 600/1800/1500MHz to 650/1944/1625MHz(core/mem/shader).

So how the extra 16SP benefits? this test is all about it. We use NiBiTor.v3.6 to modify 8800GT’s BIOS, overclock 8800GT to 8800GTS’ level, and compare two cards.

    Test Bed:

    Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme QX9650 OC 400MHz X10
    Asustek P5E3 Deluxe/Wifi-AP with 2GB Kingston DDR3-1066 6-6-6-18-1T
    WD 3200YS 320GB
    Zippy G1 600W
Windows Vista 32bit 6001 with ForceWare 169.12 beta with Modded .inf

So in other words, not worth the extra $50-$100 over the 8800GT?

What is holding the card back? Is it the fact that it has only 16 ROPs, or is it the 256 MB memory interface. My guess is a combination of the 2.

Some manufacturers are selling OC GTs at up to 700Mhz which should equal them to the performance of the GTS at stock and for still 50$ cheaper

If I wouldnt have been rockin a GTX for the last 14 months (damn, has it really been that long?), the GTS 128 would be a nice card to pick up after the price settles down a bit.

    With my 8800gt watercooled I get 767/1955/1021
The 8800gts models I have seen under water get 850/2055/1100
For it to be $100-150 more, it better be 1/3 faster, and it's not unfortunately
    I don't know why nividia has so many cards within the same performance scenario, 8800gts 320, 8800gts 640, 8800gts 640(112sp) 8800gt 512, 8800gts 512.
It just sounds to me that they are milking it

You can bet they are. Remember when all Intel had to compete with was K6? They put out the P2 300mhz and then took six months before they released the P2 350 for like a billion dollars more. Everyone was like WOW 50MHZ OMGZORZ.

I just don't see HD3870 being that competitive of a product to justify NV doing anything major. This worries me, because I really want to see D9E out in February.

One thing is for sure, by nvidia keeping the naming so close it'll probably make it much easier for nvidia and vendors to sell off old G80 stock until G92 cards completely supercede the old.

Unless you really know what you are looking for it would be hard to tell exactly what the differences are. If they gave the cards a new model number people would automatically select the bigger number as the latest which is usually the case for the most part.

I'm sure nvidia would love to move everything over to G92 right away as the cost should be somewhat lower for them but they still have to move old stock out first and replace it with new stock.

8800GTS 640MB vs 8800GTS 512MB. If you didn't know any better you would go for the 640MB, but those who know would go with the 512MB. Yup the naming scheme sucks.

Doesn't the GTS have higher Vgpu? since it has a bigger cooler they probably gave it a little more voltage... This would explain the difference too.

Real test is decent cooling and same higher Vgpu.

Scan UK has 6 models in stock at the moment, eVGA and Leadtek models (3 of) on preorder. No 320/640mb versions though.

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...Thumbnails=yes

Ebuyer UK also has 80 POV 512MB 8800GTS' in stock at the moment.

Silly of me asking most likely, but has a comparison between 640MB SSC edition and the new G92 512Mb been done?

There's also the determining factor of the coolness of the card, the gt gets close to the gts in many cases, but it certainly won't overclock as well as the gts, having got a single slot cooler.

Of course, with equal cooling on both (hr-03, for example), the results should be interesting.
