i've seen the ihs removed yes

only problem is that the northbridge was also attached to it

    i think it's a risky proposition

Wow. Don't think RMA will work for him!

What are safe temps for this NB? I've heard that at 45+ a lot of people experiance stability issues, but it seems like this thig runs hotter then that.

Mine was a steady 45-50c before I sent it in for RMA.

so maybe my temp expectations for this chipset were off, huh. I don
t feel like finding Intel's whitepaper on the x38 to find the "official" temp recomendations so have to go by what I hear. Anybody know what Intels recomendations are for the x38?

BTW. It doesn't seem like it's worth it to pop the heatsink off and reset with a better TIM or even a better cooler.

it is if you use an mcw30 on it. you can check the water section to see.

    Thanks
Tergon, what exactly are the temp issues you are having? im also having some problems. im gonna paste in the problem from my other post here:

i installed a qx9650 today and having an issue with the temp. temps are normal on all cores except the 2nd one. in core temp (0.95.4) they are : 22,41,19,20. bios reports cpu temp as 41, and so does speed fan. the asus probe software also shows 41 for cpu temp. i have not seen the 41 change at all. even when i run prime, the 41 remains constant. the other cores fluctuate normally.

btw first i had the problem in 0901. then i updated to 0902 and still having the same issue.

My temps on all four cores stay the same all the time mate. In probe, Speed fan and core temp. Evan with 12 Hours Dual Orthos and 6 Hours OCCT. It must be incorrect reporting by the bios.

i've removed the heatsink on 2 boards now, they come off pretty easy with a hairdryer to heat up the gunk. some gentle lateral twisting and you shouldn't be in danger of removing the NB

i put a mcw30 onto mine and get ~31c under load with 1.5v - it's well worth it if you have a water loop running anyway.

Did you just remove the heatpipe thing, or did you remove the IHS too on the northbridge? The big grey one that looks like Intel CPU IHS.

i didn't remove the IHS, don't want to neither it's a godsend for waterblocks.

I think I'll wait til I have a quad on this thing and verify that my nb temps are holding me back. Right now my chip has a reasonable limit to it and pushing this board hasn't been a problem. I have an OCZ ram cooler so the nb gets plenty of air anyways. We'll see, but id on't plan on taking another nb heatsink off unless i have to. Bedes, I kinda like all that copper. It looks good in my case

so if everything is reporting temps incorrectly how are you supposed to tell what the hell the temp is? is this issue fixed in 0903? if not, is there an older bios version that does not have this issue? also, in my case since its only my 2nd core thats constant, can i assume its +-5 degrees of the other cores? im just afraid to start overclocking without getting a temp reading.
