Here's a new one, I seem to have lost my IDE port on this board. I have one Plextor SATA burner, then I have another IDE Liteon DVD Burner. I know it was there a week ago when I copied Frosty the Snowman for my boys.

I have 2 150GB Raptors on 0 and 1, a Maxtor 250 SATA on 2 and the Plextor Burner on 3. The I had the IDE DVD as master on the IDE. I looked at about every option in the bios, and everything looks correct. I didn't have to do anything to get it working when I first put this thing together.

    Ideas ? RMA ?

Maybe it was the MPAA getting back at you for pirating Frosty. Any suspicious vehicles in your neighborhood lately??

Cable maybe? How about setting the drive to Cable Select instead of Master and see if that helps.

    Well,
the funny thing is that it must have happened when I pulled the board to put the QX9650 and Zalman in. But I definitely remember seeing the controller screen IDing that drive as UDMA2 when the machine booted up before swapping that CPU out. I just ordered another Plextor SATA drive, to work around the IDE issue. I really don't want to throw in the towel on this board until some newer bios's come out.

Yes i have found this as well... Use WIndows defualt one, and plug in a mic for Call of Duty 4, its all good!

FYI on my P5E got my QX9650 to 3.8G 11 x 346 (1384) FSB, 1.3v core, i have not touched memory (since i do not know wtf im doing), only FSB, Core volts and multi. Running everst stability test for 8 hours... I am such a NEWB at this, but it is so exiting! Gonna try the DX38BT with this guy next!

Runs @ 60c under everest stability test with STOCK QUIET 1200 RPM HSF!

I guess I'm on hold while I sort this out.
Well, I'm back in business (actually I was never out of business). After talking with the guys at OCZ and playing around some more I now realize just how sensitive DDR3 memory is to voltage and timing. On the XBX2's I'd just give the memory a little more voltage and loosen the timings a bit when I wanted to eliminate the memory from a troubleshooting process. YOU CAN'T DO THAT WITH DDR3!! The chips are very sensitive to overvoltage and loose timings. What will run perfectly at 1.86v will throw errors at 1.90v and 1.82v. Same for timings. If you set them too loose for the speed they're running at, you get the same errors. That was what was happening to me.

I've also learned that the memory manufacturers aren't necessarily updating their SPDs with the highest supported speeds. They're using the "generally safe default" settings. As Marcus at OCZ explained to me, they're not including DDR3-1800 SPD settings on the 1800 modules because "there's no motherboard on the planet that could use them".

So now I'm testing the E6850 at 450 FSB (4.05GHz) and 333/1333 for the full DDR3-1800 speed. I started the PRIME95 test before I left for work and just checked in on it. Still running after 3 hours.

The slots are arranged to allow double-width cards. I've got a HD 3850 in the first with a Swiftech MCW60 on it and can easily get a second in the other pcie-2.0 slot.

I have EIST OFF, Watchdog OFF, I cannot find anything in everest allowing me to turn off C1E. In-Fact everest says EIST is still enabled. Well... i am about to throw this MB in the trash.... I think i will go back the the asus, i was running for 3 days stable with stock HSF on QUIET @ 3.8 GHZ.

Take a deep breath and hold it....

Open Everest and right click on the "Copyright..." label in the lower right corner. There are a whole bunch of diagnostics one of which is CPU Tweakings.

Thanks GTJ, but still @ 9x.

GTJ, you are truly the man, i aprreciate the help! But, it still shows 9x. It is not jumping around like a Yo-yo, but it is not going to the multiplier specified. Funny thing is, in Intel desktop control panel it shows the multi set @ 11. But EVERYTHING else (besides bios) shows 9x @ 3100. My memory is running at 1381 (corsair 1333).
Multiplier has a Definatle a BIOS bug, FYI Everest still shows EIST enabled. In bios it is set to disabled. Also, if i reboot C1E re-enables itself.
I think asus has a jump on them this time, not to say P5E3 does not have problems, but it did run my QX9650 @ (11x345) 3.8 with only 1.35v Easily.

So the BIOS isn't actually setting the multiplier? That's a biggie. You guys should submit bug reports on it.

I haven't noticed EIST not being honored but then I haven't looked either.

C1E is a processor register and will reset each time the processor is reset. Check this post for a windows driver that turns it off each time the systems id rebooted...

Well, I think I've found my sweet spot with the E6850 and the OCZ DDR3-1800 sticks...

Whoa, never knew about that functionality. Thanks!

Update on my situation. I RMA'd the DX38BT, and picked up the Asus P5E3 Deluxe Wifi. The P5 is nice, overclocks a lot "easier", and I could hit 400FSB no problem, but it has some issues. First off, the sleep/suspend mode is screwed up, and it is a feature I depend on. Secondly, the majority of the expense involved with this board is stuff I disabled right away - Wifi and Express gate. I guess I just son't see what the use of the Express gate is. Support is similiar to the Intel board, except for these forums, non-existent. So I am getting another DX38BT here in day or so.

I was split between that Asus P5E3 and the DX38BT, and my decision was to just hold off until X48 based boards in Jan. Will probably pick up both the Asus branded and the Intel branded X48's.

I really like the look of this board, the black and blue-ishness will actually work out great in my mod-in-progress. The only thing I don't like so much are the chipset sinks. Would it be possible to attach something like this onto them? It says on the review that it comes with mounting hardware for all major chipsets, but I think this was written before the x38 came out.

    Thanks-Jim
