    Fast Question,

    I am having GPU problems... I think it is the GPU (bought it second hand

    Its a XFX XXX 7950GT 512MB (I have since purchased a 8800GT... waiting to recieve it).

    When I play intesive first person shooters or need for speed, I start to see artifacts after a bit of playing and then my computer freezes, only happens when I play intesive games and also happened when I ran 3Dmark2006.

    Like I said, I think it is the GPU, but can it be the mobo? I ask this cause when I went to do my RMA... the XFX people say it is either the card or the mobo.

    if you are not overclocking, i would say it is the card...but...if you are overclocking then there are other variables that could intermix causing the artifacts..one would be memory...if you are overclocking the memory near its limits (not spec limits but maybe board limits), it could cause that...you need to set everything to default and then see if the VC produces those artifacts.

    Thanks...

    I think it happens even when computer is not overclocked.

    What about the settings? To achieve overclocks... I really need help in that area... like I don't even know what range levels to try.

    SO heres another question.. SORRY..

    If I do not overclock the CPU or Voltages... how do I put the memory at its manufactured specs. I think it is suppose to do 4-4-4-12 ddr2800. Don't even know what the number mean.

    Go into bios, memory options are under advanced chipset features. Change the DRAM timing selectable from SPD to manual

    tCl = 4
    tRCD = 4
    tRP = 4
    tRAS = 12
    If you arent overclocking the fsb your memory should be running at ddr2800 by default.....Hope that helps!

    THANK YOU,

    I set those number and put EVERY else on default. System booted n.p.

    I am busy downloading.. got MAX download speed.. SO HAPPY (the little things in life)... 1070KB/seconds, things that make me happy.

    OK, I will see if my GPU give artifacts later tonight. RIght now I am going to look into getting the newest Bios... doing with a floppy.. hope thats OK. Won't be doing it for a few hours though...

    Still looking for overclocking ranges for CPU (FSB, ect... ) and Voltage levels with plausable ranges. THANK YOU. The best thing is I will post everything in post once I feel I have achieved what I want to achieve and I think my post will be one even a begginer like me (even though I use to overclock my old socket A) would understand (without knowing what anything does...lol).

    p.s. I copied the setting from some one around page 136 (showed it only by using the Guru function). My system would not boot and i had no clue what I was doing regarding ranges for each value.

    Last general question... Is it better to overclock in the bios or using the guru functions, I know you can not adjust the memory in the guru. Or is there no difference? Or do you use the guru to find what works and then adjust the bios? Anyways I think you get my drift, I hope.. THANK YOU.

    initial results:

    1) i increased my overclock to 3915 mhz (435 X 9), so far, with successful benching of 3D2001, 3D2005, 3D2006, PCMark2005 and wPrime bench.

    2.) could successfully run 4:5 memory ratio, which is the 1066 memory strap, at a slightly lower overclock of 430 FSB X 9 = 3870 Mhz....previously, could not set 4:5 memory ratio using my Dominators DDR1142 or TeamGroup DDR1000.

    3.) the only annoyance is when i cold post/boot (could be caused by my high overclock)...i get a siren like sound coming from the mobo/case speaker when it starts from a power off...it is giving you the impression that the memory is out of limits...BUT...in about 2 seconds, the siren sound stops and it post normally....on a warm reboot, it works just fine.

    i am still reducing my ICHIO (1.8) and MCH (1.64) to find my bottom point to support 3915 Mhz...i have 1.550 for vcore set in the bios and i am getting about 1.52 actual vcore...once all the low end voltages are found, i will start increasing the FSB to see if i can hold 4Ghz for benching other than Prime 95 type.
    Here is some info about the beta bios. But Beta means it is not a final release due to existing bugs (obviously). But many Beta's are still better then their predecessor. I am researching which Bios upload as well.

    Hey ACE, are you still using the Beta release?

    Actually this is good, I have some numbers to look at, even though I think I actually tried these exact numbers and my mobo would not boot , could have been the RAM.

    Here is another question off the topic. How much better is it if you do the ABit Heat SInk Mode? With NO FANS. Is it dangerous to break the mobo?

    And another question, can you get a respectable OC with DDR2 800 (Ballistix Tracer) or should I have purchased DDR2 1066?

    just remember the 1333 memory strap is the easiest to overclock.

    last week was the first i heard about it.....ace recommended it so i didnt ask any questions lol. Im glad i switched....it got rid of the annoying power off and on if you make any changes in bios (maybe that was fixed in b01 im not sure), it also allowed me to get 3.6 stable. I was stuck at 3.5 before

    Its working well for me too, but the CPU temp reported by uGuru is definitely off. Everest seems to give an accurate temp if you use one of the individual core temps.

    Well, after putting my computer back to stock and hours of game play , I stil think it is the GPU. I will be RMAing it.

    About the voltages... I know that I need to experiment, BUT surely you have a lot more experiance at this then I. And I am still hopping you can show me ranges of differene voltages with high FSBs.

    Ace, a couple more questions... did you do the heatpipe mode? Are you using fans on your heatpipe?

    Thanks again.

    I imagine they'll probably release a final v. 16 bios sometime in January, whenever the retail Penryn CPU's arrive in the retail outlets.

    With how long it's taken to get a truly great bios for this board, it makes me glad that I didn't go for the X38 based Abit board. It just takes too long for them to get all the kinks out. I had an Asus Maximus board for a few days that I sent back, talk about bugs!

    Have the fixed or improved the desktop BIOS flash utility? I remember having this option for my Biostar 4 years ago and it worked great. I'm kinda wondering why these programs are solid yet if they aren't. But I'm curious does it work well?

    Truth be told, most of the ones I've ever used have ALWAYS sucked; there was no way to use the 'advanced' command paramteres, which is pretty much a necessity with this board.

    I still use a floppy, but check out the "Flash procedure" link in Ace's sig; he tells you how you can make a bootable floppy and use it the same exact way you would use a floppy.

    if i handed it to you on a platter, you wouldn't have any sense of accomplishment....every system is different because no one motherboard is alike...that goes for the cpu, memory and VC.

    you must be kidding with that question when i have two links in my sig dedicated towards the heatpipe mod.

    Houston, we have a problem.

    Hey guys... seriously need help. Last night I put my computer to stock settings, and manually adjusted my RAM to 4-4-4-12. I play games all night, left the computer and the next morning turned it off.

    Today I went home for lunch turned on my computer and it would not boot. Would not boot to bios. Message on mobo was either F7 or 7F (sorry, I did not right it down, but I think it was the 7F!)

    Does anyone know what that means? Where can I find info on the codes that the mobo produces.

    THANK YOU.

    THANK YOU.

    There's a chart in the back of the manual that lists the error codes. Have you tried a full power down and clearing the CMOS?
