Why? Diamond is quite nice, I would have bought ATI branded if it were available.

    LoL.
That's why AMD actually decided to release the card SLOWER than what they were aiming for, like someone responded to your post probably TDP reasons.

3rd party manufacturers are still talking/planning on releasing 825-850mhz Gladiator cards.

Great review by hardware canucks! Tis a really good card for the price, but the GT is better for me as an upgrade/price. Still it looks better from ATI.

i like the price most of all

i'm planning on getting a 26" 720p HDTV anyway and these cards will fit the bill very nicely.

come summertime, it would be nice to have a cooler card too

With RV670 aswell? Wasn't that at least for R600? The "underclocking due to TDP".

In those reviews, they look for the total power consumption, that is mainly SB+Mobo, CPU, RAM and GFX, isn't it hard to have results for the gfx card, when another chipset may be drawing 12W more than the other? Or the other mobo has better efficiency overall?

thats my main point of getting one - lower native res for games. the HDMI, HD tuner, etc. is a added bonus

Looks like it lost to the 8800GT across the board, not as bad as some of the earlier reviews, but still pretty bad in some games, and turning on AA still gives a bigger performance hit on the 3870 than on the 8800GT. Not that I would even spend $500 on a video card, but I would go with a single GTX instead to two 3870 in crossfire if I have the money.

i dont think that we were looking at the same bench it beat the 8800gt and gtx in a few tests and came cole with most of them (i dont care what max is when the low is bimal ide take 10% less frames to stay playable all of the time)

and i wish that they would have oced the duel orb and done a few of the tests

Are we looking at the same review? It shows that when AA is on in some games, it actually trounces the 8800GT and if anything, suffers less from AA on than some of the 8800's, definitely moreso than the 2900XT ever did

At least it looks like the AA bug with the R600 was fixed!

NCIX Us has some hd 3870s instock 239.99

Would have ordered a couple myself but shipping was 20 dollars, alittle more than I would have liked, I'll wait for someone else with hopefully cheaper shipping and closer to MSRP prices.

Still to high for my taste. At $240 + shipping I would rather get a PNY 8800GT @ amazon.com $250

That DuOrb looks like a pretty sweet air cooler.

I wish they'd throw that on a darn 3850/3870 and see where it tops out on clocks...granted both would probably be restrained by CCC at this early stage. Still, those temps are most impressive (30+c lower at load) and it looks like heat is hampering everyone's results so far because of the craptacular stock hsfs. W1zzard, how's support coming along?

As for prices, I'd be willing to bet if you wait a day, or less, you'll be able to find one for MSRP, which is $219. There's a couple smaller shops that sold them for that, but are already sold out (or put up the page with no availability until later).

EDIT: Saw that hanners tested the 3850 512MB from PowerColor with a aftermarket sink:

    Overclocking

We tested the Radeon HD 3850 Xtreme's overclocking capabilities courtesy of the latest release of RivaTuner, mainly due to ATI's Catalyst Control Center-based overclocking tool (which has had an overhaul alongside the release of the Radeon HD 3000 series) insisting on setting both core and memory clocks to 0MHz at the end of its testing.

However, we also experienced some overclocking oddities even using RivaTuner - Overclocking itself was successful enough, as we found ourselves capable of increasing the core clock speed of the Radeon HD 3850 Xtreme up to 780MHz from its default 720MHz, while the 512MB of memory on-board was capable of reaching 930MHz stably, giving us a 30MHz increase in this discipline. However, despite setting these clocks, any benchmarks we ran failed to register any speed increase, suggesting that perhaps the 3D clocks were not altered successfully. Regardless, the overclocks we achieved seem to give a good indication of the overclocking potential of this board, and hopefully future driver releases will clean up ATI's own overclocking interface.
Looks pretty good, although surely shows signs of ATi binning the two parts accordingly (as have all other 3850 overclocking reviews)....weird that the 1ghz-rated GDDR3 could only do 930mhz, which throws if RIVATUNER was actulally working at all. I hope we see if the 3870 has some room in it (beyond 860) soon, or if v-mods make a difference.
